René Magritte was a Belgian surrealist artist known for his thought-provoking and enigmatic paintings that challenge conventional perceptions of reality and challenge the viewer's understanding of the world. He was born on November 21, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium, and he passed away on August 15, 1967, in Brussels, Belgium.Key aspects of René Magritte's life and art include:1. Surrealism: Magritte was a prominent figure in the surrealist art movement, which emerged in the early 20th century. Surrealism sought to unleash the creative potential of the subconscious mind and explore the realms of dreams and the unconscious.2. Ceci n'est pas une pipe ("This is not a pipe"): One of Magritte's most famous works is the painting "The Treachery of Images" (1929), which features an image of a pipe with the words "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" (French for "This is not a pipe") written below it. The painting challenges the viewer's perception and prompts them to question the relationship between images and reality.3. Everyday Objects: Magritte often used familiar and ordinary objects, such as bowler hats, apples, and clouds, in his paintings. However, he presented these objects in unexpected and surreal ways, creating a sense of ambiguity and mystery.4. Juxtapositions: Magritte's compositions often feature unexpected combinations of elements, challenging logical connections and creating poetic and dreamlike narratives.5. Techniques: Magritte's painting style was characterized by its precise and realistic execution, which added to the eerie quality of his surreal imagery. He often used smooth brushwork and a subdued color palette.6. Personal Mythology: Magritte's art often drew upon personal experiences, memories, and his observations of the world around him. His work delved into themes of identity, perception, and the nature of art itself.7. Later Recognition: While Magritte faced some resistance from the art establishment during his lifetime, he gained international recognition and acclaim in the later part of his career. Today, he is considered one of the most important surrealist artists and a significant influence on subsequent generations of artists.8. Legacy: René Magritte's legacy continues to resonate in contemporary art, inspiring artists across various mediums. His ability to challenge reality and explore the boundaries of imagination has made him a central figure in the history of modern art.René Magritte's surreal and thought-provoking artworks have left a lasting impact on the art world, challenging viewers to question their perceptions and delve into the depths of the unconscious mind. His paintings remain iconic examples of the power of art to transcend the ordinary and open doors to new and unexpected realms of meaning.10.6 diameter.Porcelain.

The document relates to Magritte, to artistic concepts, to Paul Nougé and to his first work Histoire de ne pas rire (1956). Breton adds to the borders, base, and in between lines multiple and lengthy interesting annotations, stating in part `Proverbs in the Flemish painting in the XVI century…the genuine common sens, I mean the one of the great poets.. the Chirico enigma was solemnly placed in the metaphysical questioning´, also describing and explaining the difference between `Intimate and internal sense..common sense..literally..figuratively..´ and referring to objects, to their utility and to their own life `like puppets´. A very interesting content document with multiple conceptual art annotations in the hand of Breton related to Magritte. VG  René Magritte (1898-1967) Belgian Surrealist Artist. Magritte thanks his cousin for her letter and information about her family, remarking 'J'ignorais qu'elle etait venue en Belgique lors de la revolution francaise et qu'elle s'appelait alors: Margueritte' (Translation: 'I did not know that she had come to Belgium during the French Revolution and that her name was then: Margueritte') and further reflecting on the possible reasons for desiring a change in the name. The artist also adds that he and his wife would be pleased to meet if his correspondent ever comes to Brussels, and equally they would be happy to visit her in Jumet, although this would not be possible until next January. ‘inspiration is always possible – if not present – whatever happiness or unhappiness is present’ MAGRITTE RENE: (1898-1967) Belgian surrealist artist. An excellent A.L.S., Rene, two pages, 8vo, Rue des Mimosas, Brussels, 25th August 1963, to his cousin, in French. Magritte expresses his regret that he probably didn't explain himself very well in his last letter, explaining that he had thought, on reflection, 'pour obtenir un succes evident (et, helas, toujours incertain lorsqu'il s'agit d'etre apprecie pour le public des expositions et par les soi-disant critiques d'art) il aurait ete souhaitable de remettre ta premiere exposition a plus tard' (Translation: 'to obtain an obvious success (and, alas, always being uncertain when it comes to being appreciated by the public at exhibitions and by the so-called art critics) it would have been desirable to postpone your first exhibition until later') and continuing to comment 'Cela ne met pas en cause la qualite deja remarquable de tes travaux. This does not call into question the already remarkable quality of your work. But this implies that new works would have even more chances of meeting with more success……on reflection, I thought it would be more desirable to have “more assets in your game” and I should, I thought, tell you, not believing that the date of your exhibition is absolutely irrevocable. The proof of my interest in the works seems to me indisputable'). For my part, I do not attach any importance to the “consequences”, the success or the public failure……it is only the authenticity of the works that matters and that of your work is not questionable to me. It is because of this authenticity that we can expect greater mastery than at present. The part of your letter relating to joy and suffering, I understand, I think, very well. Life is never a failure for fools. If you have remembered what I wrote in a catalogue, you must know that I do not confuse the importance of “competitors” with that of the presence of mind essential to the design of a work of art: I wrote “inspiration is always possible - if not present - whatever happiness or unhappiness is present”'). A letter of fine content. VG

Otto Schade Tiger Eye, 2023 Pen and pencil on card Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About A native of Chile, Otto Schade took his vibrant art to England in 2005. After attaining an architecture degree in Concepción, Otto began his career as an urban sculptor. But it was his fascination with surreal art that led him toward his passion to paint. Inspired by masters of the past like Dali, Magritte, Miro, Giger, and Beksiński. Otto quickly found the local street art scene, where he painted pieces boasting a sharp and ironic twist. While communicating anti-war themes along with his trademark ribbon style, he earned a street cred name, Osch, in London's district of Shoreditch and beyond. Since then, Otto's art has gone global. He has participated in some of the biggest art festivals, including the "Upfest" in Bristol, "Sand, Sea and Spray" in Blackpool, "City of Colors" in Birmingham and "Hometown" in Berlin. As well, Otto's pieces have been exhibited in the USA, South America, Africa, Asia and many cities across Europe. The demand for Otto's unique pieces of art continues. In 2018 alone, he participated in two art exhibitions - one in Paris and one in Berlin - and had the opportunity to paint in the following cities: Miami, New York City, Denver, Lisbon, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich and Santiago. In December, Otto was painting a mural in Jamaica. The eclectic works of Otto Schade can be found on the streets of many European cities - including Berlin, Amsterdam, Moscow, Paris, Barcelona, Porto, Luxembourg, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Brussels, and London - and can be viewed in various galleries and exhibition centres across Europe.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works.
