After studying at Oxford and working for the BBC, he spent two years in the 1960s setting up a radio station in the Kiribati Islands. His deep connection to the Pacific led to many return visits, including work for a German museum, where he facilitated the export of an ethnic house for an exhibition. A dedicated scholar of Pacific history and culture, he built his collection of books over many years through a dealer in York and even translated two German works into English: The Material Culture of Kiribati and The Material Culture of Tuvalu.
Arthur WRAGG (1903-1976) The Way To God Ink and watercolour on board, illustration for the front cover for a rare booklet published by the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1934, 26.5cm x 34cm.Frederick Roberts Johnson and Arthur Wragg, two friends who met whilst training to become commercial artists, moved together to Polperro in 1924, staying at 'The House on the Props'. They had somewhat contrasting styles which somehow sometimes overlapped; Wragg's style was likened to David Low and Victor 'Vicky Weisz, sharing within his lifetime the same respect and public interest as the two aforementioned. His work was also regularly compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, though Wragg's own heroes were Cruickshank, Albrecht Durer and William Blake, the latter being someone he was also compared to within his lifetime. Wragg's first book was hugely successful, having to be reprinted three times in one year and it became Book of The Year in America.Frederick Roberts Johnson was a very succesful commercial artist and was often the one who usually went to London in search of commissions for the pair. He often used the name 'Essex' or 'Sax', drawing funnies for Punch, Everyman magazine and Tribune, as well as advertisements for Lyons Tea Shops and producing dustjacket book illustrations for various authors. His style was more varied and experimental, with impressionism, cubism and abstract examples of his work within the sale.

Chromolithograph of the Hawaiian flower "Wiliwili," Plate 19, after the illustrations from Isabella Sinclair's groundbreaking publication The Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands (1885-1889). This rare print references Sinclair's original watercolor plates from one of only 500 books ever produced, featuring 44 hand-colored illustrations of Hawaiian flora. Sinclair, residing on Kauai at the time, illustrated and wrote the text for the book, making it the first publication exclusively dedicated to Hawaiian plants and flowers. This lithograph is an authentic representation of 19th-century Hawaiian history and artistry, offering a connection to the island's natural beauty and cultural legacy. Registration No: S346 NSO Chassis No: WP0ZZZ99ZXS602223 MOT: January 2026Warranted 12,500 miles from newPurchased by the vendor while a resident of Jersey when 18 months oldExceptionally original and excellently presentedAccompanied by a strong service history with the vast majority from Official Porsche Centres (OPC)Asked to nominate his favourite generation of Porsche 911 during its 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2013, racing driver and journalist Tiff Needell chose the 996 commenting: "This was the model that brought the 911 into the modern world. We finally got rid of the VW pedals and had a chassis that handled in a much more progressive and controllable manner. Not a convert before completely converted after!" Traditionalists may have decried the 996's water-cooled engine and shared Boxster componentry, however, the newcomer's use of a brand-new platform (the 911's first since 1963) meant that it was notably lighter, stiffer, and more aerodynamic than its 993 predecessor. Equipped with four-valve cylinder heads, the 996's 3.4-litre engine developed 296bhp and 258lbft (outputs comparable to those of the 993 Carrera RS's 3.8-litre unit). Allied to either a six-speed manual or five-speed Tiptronic transmission, the free-revving flat-six enabled the 2+2-seater to sprint to 60mph in 5 seconds and onto 174mph. More ergonomically laid out and spacious than that of any previous 911, the 996's cabin also boasted a far better HVAC system. Early 3.4-litre 996 cars are increasingly sought after because of their stronger dual-row IMS bearings and mechanical throttles.Supplied new by Official Porsche Centre (OPC) Five Oaks Garage of Jersey on 4th January 1999 to a titled gentleman, ‘S346 NSO’ was fitted with various ‘Exclusive Programme’ options which necessitated its transfer from the regular production line to the Zuffenhausen firm’s hallowed ‘Werk 1’ building. Finished in the striking combination of Schwarz Metallic with Black leather upholstery, the 911 had contrasting alloy-hued trim added to its handbrake lever, gear selector surround and instrument faces. Specified without a ‘no cost option’ electric sunroof, the 2+2-seater received such niceties as ParkAssist, heated / memory seats, Porsche crested wheel caps, 18-inch SportClassic two-piece alloy wheels and leather bound floor mats. Entering the current (second) ownership when it was just eighteen months old, the Porsche relocated from Jersey to Scotland in 2009. Cherished and sparingly used over the past quarter century, the four-wheel drive sportscar has covered a very modest 12,500 miles from new.Notably original, the 911 is understood to have never had (or needed) attention to its factory paintwork or upholstery. The accompanying original Porsche wallet contains the owner’s manual and service book with the latter documenting no fewer than thirteen services plus six brake fluid changes, seven long-life reports and two airbag checks. The book was not stamped when a fourteenth service was carried out in January 2024 at 12,433 miles but the associated invoice remains on file (as does the car’s V5C Registration Document and MOT history). Starting readily and running well during our recent photography session, ‘S346 NSO’ pleasingly retains its original tool-kit, locking wheel nut and warning triangle. We have known well-maintained 996s to cover 200,000 miles or more without needing an engine overhaul. Thus, it is rare to find one with such a modest odometer reading. Given the increasing collectability of the first generation cars, this two-owner, well looked after example is definitely one to consider. Registration No: M706 ELC Chassis No: SCBZP03C6SCH55105 MOT: January 20261 of just 25 Turbo RL cars made to right-hand drive specification during the 1995 model yearTreated to almost £20,000 worth of servicing and improvement work by Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists Shadow Vehicle Services and Prestige Services since 2020Elegantly finished in Red Pearl with Sandstone hide upholstery piped in St James Red82,000 recorded miles but could reportedly pass for 28,000!Colour coded front wing vents with mesh insertsHuge value for moneyIntroduced in March 1985, the Bentley Turbo R could be had in standard or long wheelbase guises. The marque’s most expensive offering, the latter cossetted rear seat occupants with an extra four inches’ legroom. However, the associated price increase was such that most customers opted to forego the additional space (the Turbo R outsold the Turbo RL by roughly 3:1). Progressively evolved throughout its twelve-year production run, the Turbo RL gained Bosch KE- Jetronic fuel injection, anti-lock brakes (1987 model year), GM 4-L80E four-speed automatic transmission (1992 model year), front airbags, Electronic Boost Control (1994 model year) and 17-inch alloy wheels (1995 model year) among myriad other changes. Performance remained a strong point with 1995 model year cars reputedly being capable of 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and 155mph! Every Turbo RL was effectively a special order machine with just 47 examples being handbuilt during the 1995 model year (22 LHD and 25 RHD). One of the twenty-five cars completed to right-hand drive specification during the 1995 model year, chassis SCBZP03C6SCH55105 was supplied new by Lancaster Europa Ltd of Sheffield on 15th August 1994. Finished in the attractive combination of Red Pearl (Mica) with Sandstone leather and St James Red piping, the Bentley’s condition belies the 82,000 miles recorded by its odometer. Indeed, the seller feels that the first two digits could credibly be transposed such is his confidence in the way the Turbo RL looks and drives. Inspired by that of the Continental R, the handsome dashboard is complemented by rear picnic tables. While a large bore exhaust pipe, matrix grille and body coloured front wing vents with mesh inserts hint at the turn of speed available. Treated to nearly £20,000 worth of servicing and improvement work by Shadow Vehicle Services of Pudsey and Prestige Services of Leeds since 2020, the luxury sports saloon has benefited from a top-end engine overhaul; skimmed cylinder heads; new head gaskets, renewal of the cooling equipment and reconditioning of the radiator; a new lower steering column; new front brake discs and pads; new front springs and shock absorbers; and a new brake accumulator etc. Interestingly, the staff at Shadow Vehicle Services and Prestige Services were trained to factory standards at Rippon Bros and (its successor) Appleyard Rippon respectively. Worthy of close inspection, this decidedly rare and well looked after Turbo RL is due to be driven to the Pavilion Gardens. Offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, original owner’s handbook, stamped service book, current ‘no advisories’ MOT certificate valid until May 2025, tool kit and numerous invoices etc. PLEASE NOTE: This lot now possesses a 'no advisories' MOT certificate valid until January 2026 For more information, please contact: Damian Jones damian.jones@handh.co.uk 07855 493737
Registration No: V910 HHL Chassis No: SDLBA03R8XB002207 MOT: NoneFinished in the rare and attractive combination of Crystal Verdi with Fern Green leather upholsteryCurrent ownership since 2014 and just 56,000 miles from newHighly desirable 450 modelOffered with the original stamped service bookIntroduced at the 1992 Motor Show, the Chimaera was intended to be a more practical, user-friendly machine than the formidable Griffith. To this end, it sported a proper boot and a more cosseting interior. Power came from a variety of Rover V8-derived units, though, even the entry-level 4.0 litre was quoted as developing 240bhp/270lbft. The slowest of the range, it was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds, 0-100mph in 12.1 seconds and 152mph! Luckily all Chimaeras came with four-wheel disc brakes and a Quaife differential as standard. A 4.5-litre model was added to the line-up in 1997, with the Chimaera 450 said to offer 285bhp and 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds.Manufactured in the year 2000, this desirable 450-engined Chimaera was purchased new via Hillfoot TVR in Sheffield on the 5th April that year and was finished from new in the rare colour scheme of Crystal Verdi paintwork with Fern Green leather interior upholstery, Green carpets, and a Racing Green hood. Purchased into current ownership in 2014 when the Chimaera had covered just 32,500 miles, the vendor has used the TVR as intended, adding some 23,500 miles to the odometer, meaning ‘V910 HHL’ is offered now having covered a modest c.56,000 miles from new.Offered with the original combined owner’s handbook and stamped service book, the service book displays eleven service stamps (plus the PDI inspection) with all of these completed by TVR main agents or specialists. Most recently serviced at 52,797 miles in 2022 by TVR specialists Technical Vehicle Repairs & Servicing (South West) Ltd., the Chimaera is further accompanied by a history file with a current V5C document. A desirable 450 model in a striking and rare colour scheme, this is not one to miss for TVR fans! For more information, please contact: Paul Cheetham paul.cheetham@handh.co.uk 07538 667452
Registration No: GN06 LWC Chassis No: SARRXXTGB4D000297 MOT: January 2026Very rare and desirable V8, 4600cc Mustang engine example with five-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and LSDOne of just c.88 Estate 260s produced according to MG Owner's ClubJust 28,000 miles from newOnly 1 former keeperAfter a long wait, the rear-wheel-drive MG ZT made an appearance in September 2003. Completely re-engineering the standard ZT shell to accommodate Ford's superb modular Mustang 4.6-litre V8 engine which produced 256bhp and allied to a five-speed Tremec TR-350 manual transmission. SE spec examples included a Harman Kardon sound system with a factory subwoofer and X-Power rear exhausts, really enhancing that V8 soundtrack. An Auto Express report on the ZT 260s declared the Mustang engine cars as having ‘bags of torque, a well-engineered chassis and an intoxicating soundtrack, making this one of MG Rover's strongest products’. Limited numbers were produced with 187 MkI (pre-facelift examples) and 374 MkII examples understood to have been produced, of which only 88 of both generations were estate variants.'GN06 LWC' was supplied new by Ford main agent SMC Ford Sittingbourne, with Ford agents purchasing some of the ZT 260s that remained available and unregistered. This ZT-T was manufactured in 2005, before being first registered on the 24th May 2006, and would have cost a total of £29,450 when new. Finished in the attractive colour scheme of XPower Grey paintwork, the interior is trimmed in Dark Grey and Black half leather and half Alcantara, along with a Black leather dashboard and a Grey roof lining. An extremely low mileage example having covered just 28,000 miles from new, the ZT-T has been in the possession of just two registered keepers. Residing in Sittingbourne whilst in the first ownership, the MG covered approximately 18,000 miles, before being purchased by the second keeper in 2007, covering a further 10,000 miles subsequently. Most recently in dry storage since 2016 (but still maintained), ‘GN06 LWC´ started readily, and both ran and drove well for the recent photography session. Benefitting from a new battery at the start of this year, the MG is supplied with a history file that contains the combined stamped service book and owner's handbook, a collection of previous MOTs, the original price list and sales brochure, a no advisory MOT certificate until January next year and a current V5C document, as well as two keys. Presented very nicely, all Mustang engine ZTs are very rare, with the estate variants being exceptionally scarce. The 260 ZTs are undoubtedly becoming incredibly collectable! Believed to be c.600 produced, the Sprint 135 iteration offered a blend of exclusivity and enhanced styling and was equipped with a 1.8-litre engine producing 134 bhp, similar to the standard TF 135, but it was tuned for a sportier driving experience. Available in five unique colour combinations: Solar Red, XPower Grey, Starlight Silver, Le Mans Green, and Trophy Blue2, the Sprint 135 included special badging and interior trim to distinguish it from the standard models. A classic British sportscar that offers great value and a little touch of exclusivity today.Supplied new, by the long-established family run MG dealer Summit Garage (Dudley) Limited on 28th September 2002, the TF, finished in Starlight Silver with the chrome pack and part leather and Alcantara seats, has been in current ownership since 2017. Pleasingly, the TF is also supplied with a quite rare and original TF hardtop. In its current ownership, the TF has been maintained by specialists MG Tastic. Key work includes all belts being changed and a major service carried out in January 2022. Additionally, a new starter motor, 4-pot callipers, and new seat belts have been fitted, along with recent Toyo Proxes tyres. The engine has been remapped by SAWS Tuning to approximately 155bhp and received an MLS head gasket in 2022. An engine overhaul was previously completed in 2017, with documentation available in the form of invoices and photographs of the restoration work. A new clutch and wishbones were replaced in 2015. The car is offered with a comprehensive history file, the original service book and owner’s manual. It also includes a new plastic window in the hood, an MG deflector, a tonneau cover, and a hard top. For more information, please contact: Luke Hipkiss luke.hipkiss@handh.co.uk 07886398226
Registration No: SV53 HHE Chassis No: SALLMAMC34A145681 MOT: December 2025Purchased new by the vendor whilst a resident of JerseyWarranted 38,000 miles from newExceptionally original and finished in the rare colour of Giverny GreenOffered with the original book pack with stamped service bookPLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has been running and driving at the sale. However, it has since developed an immobilser fault. The rectifying part has been ordered and will be fitted tomorrow by a local specialist to rectify the faultThe launch of the third-generation Range Rover (L322) coincided with an asset scramble for the leftovers of the Rover Group. Development of the L322 however, had already been largely shipped out to Munich but the L322’s slick and clean modern design came from Solihull. Geoff Upex had become Rover’s design chief and concept director in 1995 and it was his vision for the L322 that beat a proposition from BMW’s chief designer, Chris Bangle. Monocoque construction transformed the L322’s on-road manners. The TD6 diesel engine was more efficient and cleaner than the larger petrol engines that dominated earlier models and offered much lower running costs, a greater range between refuels, and unparalleled reliability. The Vogue trim was the flagship specification for the TD6, elevating the vehicle’s luxury quotient with a plethora of premium features, and introduced several exclusive enhancements over base and HSE trims.Land Rover agents Ruettes Braye of the Channel Islands supplied ‘SV53 HHE’ as new to the vendor (a resident of Jersey) on 30th October 2003. Finished in the rare Giverny Green with matching leather interior upholstery with Cream piping, this is a well-specified Vogue example. A pleasingly original example, the Range Rover is understood to boast all of its factory paintwork and displays the supplying dealer’s window sticker. Accompanying the vendor upon his return to reside in Scotland in 2006, the L322 Range Rover is now offered as a warranted and remarkably low 38,000 mile example. Retained by the vendor from new, the Range Rover has always been garaged during his ownership. Notably less worked than many a Range Rover, the ‘SV53 HHE’ has also been well serviced, as illustrated in the accompanying stamped service book and collection of invoices that show a total of ten services, the most recent being completed in November 2024 at 38,658 miles. The service book is presented in the full book pack with the Land Rover wallet, alongside MOT history and a current V5C showing zero former keepers. Benefitting from a new battery in January 2025, the Range Rover started readily and ran well on our visit. With one owner, very low mileage, and a rare colour scheme, this L322 Range Rover has much to recommend it. For more information, please contact: Paul Cheetham paul.cheetham@handh.co.uk 07538 667452

The configuration allowed Audi to build a 12-cylinder saloon with all-wheel drive, with conventional V12 only able to facilitate rear-wheel drive configuration. Audi re-styled the A8 in 2005, giving all variants a taller, wider trapezoidal single-frame grille, with the W12 also being the first model was to be offered with LED running lights. The naturally aspirated 6.0-litre W12 delivers around 444bhp via a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission with paddle shift, with the W12’s maximum 428 lb ft of torque and performance figures of 5.1-second 0-62mph time, and an electronically limited 155mph top speed.Manufactured in 2005, ‘YF05 JHY’ was supplied new to its first owner on the 10th of June that year by Alexander Audi of Huddersfield. Registration No: S603 TAH Chassis No: SCFAA1116TK100693 MOT: February 2026Rare and desirable manual gearbox exampleNew rear brakes, suspension and cylinder head gasket within the last few thousand milesDisplaying c.87,000 miles on the odometerFitted with the supercharged 3.2 litre AJ6 engineSupplied with fresh MOT for the new ownerAlthough Victor Gauntlett had long mooted the idea, it took the arrival of Ford money and TWR Group know-how for a new generation, 'small' Aston Martin to become a reality. Introduced at the March 1993 Geneva Salon - albeit deliveries did not start until late the following year - the newcomer had been subjected to more testing and development work than any of the marque's previous models. Indeed, under the watchful eye of Engineering Director Rod Mansfield Project NPX (as the DB7 was labelled) got through some thirty prototypes. Based around a steel semi-monocoque chassis the production version was equipped with all-round independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and power-assisted rack and pinion steering. Derived from a proven Jaguar unit, the DB7's 3239cc DOHC straight-six engine boasted four valves per cylinder, Zytec multi-point fuel injection and an Eaton supercharger. Credited with developing 335bhp and 360lbft, it was allied to five-speed manual transmission as standard and reputedly enabled the Aston Martin to sprint from 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds and reach 161mph. However, it was the way the Fixed Head Coupe looked, rather than its performance potential, which wowed the public. Styled by Ian Callum, the DB7 has long been regarded as a modern masterpiece. Priced at c.£80,000, the six-cylinder Coupe remained current until 1999, by which time some 1,578 had been sold.Presenting in the more exclusive DB7 paint finish of Black, handsomely complemented by a Tan leather interior with wood veneer trim and Nardi Torino steering wheel. The supercharged 3.2 litre AJ6 engine is mated to the rare and desirable manual gearbox. Displaying c.87,000 miles on the odometer, there are 25 entries in the service book, of those 15 are main dealer stamps and the rest from specialists. As stated on the HPI report, the DB7 was previously subject to a ‘Category D Insurance Loss' in 2005. The vendor is unaware of what actual repairs were carried out before his ownership however, more recently it has benefitted from new suspension in 2023, attention to the rear brakes and a cylinder head gasket within the last few thousand miles and further states he has also had a repair made to the driver’s seat bolster and carried out an interior and exterior detail. It is coming to auction offered with its original leather-bound book pack containing the original owner’s manual, the aforementioned service book, many receipts and the current V5C. Registration No: S560 AAN Chassis No: SAJDKAMF3CR853352 MOT: February 2026Only c.63,000 miles on the odometerFull main dealer service history until 55,066 miles in 2016 with Lancaster Jaguar ReadingJust four former keepersRare and desirable LWB Super V8 exampleFresh MOT with no advisories as per the last 3 since 2022The new V8-powered Daimler saloons were introduced in 1997 as part of Jaguar's revised X300 range, a new and highly acclaimed ZF five-speed automatic gearbox arriving at the same time. This state-of-the-art, quad-cam, 32-valve engine was built in capacities of 3.2 and 4.0 litres to power three new Jaguars and two new Daimlers. The new Daimlers comprised the V8 and Super V8, the latter equipped with a 322bhp supercharged unit, both of which shared the same long-wheelbase four-door saloon body and were equipped to the customarily very high standard of luxury. As well as being V8 powered, the car is taken to other extremes with its very rare supercharging, and long-wheelbase and luxurious specification. One of the proudest traditions in Daimler history was that since 1900, when the then Prince of Wales, later HM King Edward VII, purchased his first Daimler car, Daimlers were used by British Kings and Queens, with the Super V8 being no different, with Queen Elizabeth II herself having owned one.First registered on the 24th August 1998, this is a rare and desirable LWB Super V8. Finished in Red with a Cream leather interior and displaying only c.63,000 miles on the odometer, there are just four former keepers recorded on the V5C. Owned by the vendor for the last 3 years and only covering some 7,000 miles in that period, it appears the car was fully serviced and maintained, with main dealer service history until 55,066 miles in 2016 with Lancaster Jaguar Reading, it was at that point when the previous keeper became ill. Maintenance has included the fitment of a new battery, space-saver spare wheel and four matching 'good-tread' Pirelli 'P zeros' on the car. There's a new centre cap on order for the front nearside wheel and will be fitted before the sale. The car benefits from a very recent MOT (February 2026 expiration) with no advisories as per the last 3 since 2022. On the photography session, our consultant found the Super V8 was a pleasure to be driven in, very quiet on both the suspension and the engine and comfortable too. It is being offered with a comprehensive main dealer service record up to 2016 along with the book pack, 2 keys and a V5C. Announced on the Porsche website in early June 2008, the newcomer boasted revised DFI (direct fuel injection) engines that were stronger and more powerful than their predecessors plus recalibrated suspension, subtle styling tweaks, and the option of Porsche’s dual-clutch PDK transmission. Significantly smaller and lighter than its 991- and 992-series successors, the 997.2 also did without its feel-sapping electric power steering. The 997 Carrera 4S was, and still is, widely regarded as the greatest non-turbo version of the 911 with the four-wheel drive system providing the grip that ensured stable handling and predictable cornering.Manufactured new in 2008, the Targa Carrera 4S offered, chassis ‘730367’ was registered new on the 13th of November that year. Finished in the rare and striking colour of Nordic Gold paintwork with Black leather interior upholstery, the four-wheel drive Targa was supplied from the factory with the PDK gearbox, Carbon effect handbrake cover, twin five-spoke alloy wheels, climate control, and Porsche Stability Management. Purchased by the vendor when the Porsche was just four years old (in 2012), the 911 has had just three former keepers. Offered now having covered some 98,000 miles from new, the vendor informs that the 911 has been serviced bi-annually by specialists Porschtek in Leeds. Supplied with a current V5C document and the original book pack, the terrific performance on offer combined with reliability and build quality, narrow down the choice of sports cars on offer to the Porsche 997 and this represents a superb example. Kemp, Royal Navy, who subsequently served as personal assistant to Guglielmo Marconi, and was present alongside Marconi on all his major experiments, including the first Transatlantic signal Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 1 clasp, Alexandria 11th July (G. S. Kemp. Cox: Cutt: H.M.S. “Alexandra.”); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (G. S. Kemp, Torpo. Instr., H.M.[S.] Hecla) impressed naming; Khedive’s Star, dated 1882, unnamed as issued, contact marks from star, better than good fine, the LS&GC rare to rate (3) £600-£800 --- George Stephen Kemp was born in Minster, Kent, on 3 November 1857 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 1 January 1873. He served in H.M.S. Alexandra from 12 March 1880 to 14 November 1882, being advanced Leading Seaman on 1 January 1882, and Petty Officer Second Class on 15 July 1882, and took part in the bombardment of Alexandria. Promoted Petty Officer First Class on 1 September 1884, and Chief Petty Officer on 23 May 1888, he was for many years a Torpedo Instructor, and was promoted Chief Torpedo Instructor in 1887. Shore pensioned on 11 November 1895, his record of service notes: ‘Has invented a method of communication over long distances by means of an ingenious adaptation of existing telegraph gear which is to be experimented on and carried out in H.M.S. Vernon.’ Appointed to the engineering staff of the Post Office, Kemp first met Guglielmo Marconi on 27 July 1896. The story of this encounted is told by Degna Marconi in her book ‘My Father, Marconi’: ‘My father told me that he set up one of his first demonstrations on the roof of the Post Office in St Martin's-le-Grand where he planned to signal to the Savings Bank Department on Queen Victoria Street. When he looked over the ornate stone balustrade, he saw a red-headed fellow watching him curiously. The man on the pavement caught my father's eye and shouted up, “What are you doing there?”Marconi called back, “Come on up and I'll show you.” The onlooker arrived on the roof with such remarkable promptitude that my father believed he had scrambled up the drain (I sincerely hope not, for the Post Office is a towering eight storeys high). The moment George Kemp reached the rooftop he went to work for Marconi and continued to work for him forever after.’ ‘In this manner Kemp, an ex-Naval Petty Officer, became Marconi's first personal assistant. As such he sailed to Newfoundland with him on the epic transatlantic experiment and shared in the triumphs and disappointments which led ultimately to a successful commercial trans-ocean service. All Marconi's subsequent personal assistants displayed great devotion to him, but none more intensely than Kemp, whose activity in implementing the experiments proposed by his leader was tireless. At his death he left a valuable legacy behind him in the form of twenty-one volumes of the day-to-day journal that he kept until his death. It is to the existence of these that the Company is indebted for much of the detail of its early history.’ (A History of the Marconi Company, by W. J. Baker refers). Kemp died in 1933. His diaries, referred to above, are held as part of the Marconi Archive at the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Sold with a First Day Cover (13 September 1972) commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the first wireless transmission across water, the photograph depicting both Marconi and Kemp; a copy of ‘A History of the Marconi Company’, by W. J. Baker, the cover of which features the same photograph; and copied record of service and medal roll extract.

MASCARDI, Vitale - BENTIVOGLIO, Guido. Festa, fatta in Roma, alli 25 di Febbraio 1634. E data in luce da Vitale Mascardi. In Roma, 1635In 4to; mm. 243x172. Contemporary full vellum binding. Pp 8, 135, 1. Engraved titlepage and 12 engravings on double page engraved by François Collignon on drawnings by Andrea Sacchi. Rare first edition with the description of the feasts promoted by Cardinal Antonio Barberini, brother of Pope Urban VIII, on the occasion of the visit to Rome of Prince Alexander Carlo Vasa of Poland during the Roman carnival and with the report of the famous feast of Saracino. A sought work also for the beautiful engravings made by F. Collignon on drawings by Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661), a well-known Roman painter protected by Cardinal Barberini to whom this feast book is dedicated. The author, Cardinal Guido Bentivoglio (1577-1644), apostolic nuncio in Flanders and then in France, signed the sentence against Galileo as head of the Inquisition. Counselor of Urban VIII, Bentivoglio would perhaps have been his successor if he had not died during the Conclave.
GIEGHER, Mattia. Li tre trattati. Padova, Paolo Frambotto, 1639Oblong 4to, mm. 160x208; Nice armorial binding of XIX century, red morocco, at the center of the covers coat of arms of the family Choiseul-Beaupré, spine with 5 small ribs, Title and year of the publishing in gold, inside cover and endpapers with coloured paper, lips of covers with double golden rules, rich inner dentelles; pp. [16], 7 copper plates [portrqait of the Author and numbered plates 1-6], pp. 2 bl, 54, 4 copper plates, pp. 4 nn., pp. 30 nn., 2 copper plates folded,. 1-12, 1-24. A total of 49 copper plates out text. Fine specimen. Rare complete edition beautifully illustrated. The splendid plates illustrate the art of composition of banquets and art cutting meats. The work consists of the following Treatises: Il trattato delle Piegature [Treatise on Linen Folding]; Il trattato dello Scalco [Treatise on The Steward]; Il trattato del Trinciante [Treatise on The Carver]; la Tavola de' nomi delle carni de' Quadrupedi e del modo di trinciarle; la tavola de' nomi e modi di trinciar li Volatili, Pesci e frutti. The first book contains the figures related to how to fold tablecloths and napkins in imaginative and elaborate ways, shaped in the form of caravel or bird, with elegant models for the provision of tablecloths and sugar statues. The second "... teaches the way to put the food on the table." The third way to chop all kinds of animals, with precise instructions to chop masterfully breast of veal or a whole rabbit, and great cedars cut in the shape of acorns, fish or turtle. Mattia Giegher, the Italianised name of Matthias Jäger, originally from Bavaria, was one of the masters of napkin folding. The young Mattia came to Italy in around 1616 and settled in Padua, where he became an expert carver, with the important role of slicing meat and cutting food during banquets. In the dedicatory points out why, in honor of the German nation, he has composed a "Operetta, which teaches with easy way to bend all sorts of napkins and tablecloths in many manners and fair", adding two other works entitled the Scalco and Trinciante, even before printed but “now renovated and largely expanded”. The primary value of the work is given by the exceptionality of the illustrations: they combine the advantage of the variety and adherence to the implicit technical procedures in the art to set up canteens, as well as to fulfill the obligations that were routinely required.

Count Ercole Silva, 1756-1840, a prominent writer and scholar in Milanese culture between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, specialized in landscape architecture studies: his publication Dell'arte de' giardini inglesi is famous; he is in fact credited with having contributed to introducing the fashion of English gardens to Italy. He also expanded the vast library of Villa Silva in Cinisello Balsamo (now Villa Ghirlanda-Silva) created by his uncle Donato and in 1811 he composed the relative Catalogo de' libri della Biblioteca Silva in Cinisello (1811). Complete specimen of the four blank maps in very good condition. The first and only rare Aldine edition of these three astronomical treatises of considerable importance, two by Macrobius and the third by Censorinus, which report alternative conceptions to the Ptolemaic Vulgate. Scipio's Dream, which forms the bulk of the sixth book of Cicero's De Republica, is perhaps the best known passage because, unlike the rest of the work, it has come down to us virtually intact. It was Macrobius' commentary on this Dream that allowed the transmission of Cicero's text: if the commentary itself contained only excerpts, later copyists included the entire text in their manuscripts. In the Commentary on Scipio's Dream, Macrobius, born around 370 in Sicca in Numidia, deals with the soul and the constitution of the universe by giving a Neo-Platonic interpretation of a famous passage from Cicero's Republic. The Saturnalia is a philosophical dialogue on history, mythology, literature and science. The edition also contains the only treatise that has come down to us from Censorinus, a Latin grammarian of the 3rd century: De die natali, which contains valuable insights into both the customs of the Romans, dealing with the birth and life of man, days, months, years, religious rites, etc., and the state of science at the time, with considerations of chronology, astronomy, natural history and music. This is the first Aldine impression of Censorino's work; Aldo the Younger gave a new edition, annotated by him, in 1581.Adams, M-62; Brunet, III, 1286; Houzeau/Lancaster 1055 & 1046; Renouard, p. 165, n° 2; Sander 4080; Texas 228 (from the library of Derwent Coleridge); The Aldine Press, cat. 251; UCLA, 251; USTC, 839413; Cfr. James Northcote RA (English, 1746-1831) Two Leopards at Play from the Royal Menagerie 1797 Oil on canvas Exhibited at The Royal Academy 1797 This incredibly rare eighteenth century painting depicts two leopards frolicking in an exotic landscape (reminiscent of Stubbs’s ‘Horse Frightened by a Lioness’). Painted in 1796 and exhibited at The Royal Academy 1797. Northcote was widely acclaimed as one of the eighteenth century’s finest painters of exotic animals and, having been trained by Reynolds, had a weighty reputation. The animals have been classified by zoological expert Dr Jonathan Scott as Sunda Clouded Leopards from Indochina, denoted by the clouded pattern on their flanks and the exceptionally large gape of their mouths - almost 90 degrees! And by their elongated canine teeth - the longest of any living felid. It is likely that Northcote will have studied these two rare animals whilst they were resident at the Royal Menagerie at the Tower of London. Whilst many exotic animals were available to view at both the Royal Menagerie and others, very few artists were able to capture the character and anatomy with such impressive skill. Although Northcote had enjoyed prior financial and critical success with his portrait paintings, his animal paintings were particularly revered. Henry Fuseli, the Swiss Romantic painter and contemporary rival of Northcote, declared of Northcote's 'Angel opposing Balaam,' “Northcote, you are an angel at an ass, but an ass at an angel”. Born in Plymouth and apprenticed to his father, a poor watchmaker, in his spare time James drew and painted. In 1769 he left his father and set up as a portrait painter. Four years later he went to London and was admitted as a pupil into the studio and house of Sir Joshua Reynolds. At the same time, he attended the Royal Academy Schools. In 1775 he left Reynolds, and about two years later, having made some money by portrait painting back in Devon, went to study in Italy. On his return to England three years later, he revisited his native county and then settled in London, where John Opie and Henry Fuseli were his rivals. He was elected associate of the Academy in 1786 and a full academician the following spring. Northcote’s works number about two thousand, and he made a fortune of £40,000. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1787. Northcote also sought fame as an author, and his first essays were contributions to the Artist, edited by Prince Hoare. An entry in Northcote's account book from 1794-1796, p. 66, no. 324, refers to 'Two Leopards twenty Guineas '. Registration – F229 RGS Chassis No. – WP0ZZZ94ZKN400609 M.O.T. – Decmeber 2025 Odometer – 172,000 This gleaming white 1988 Porsche 944 2.7-litre is a well-cared-for car that’s being offered at No Reserve. A highly authentic example, it boasts the original teledial alloy wheels which present very well indeed. This is testament to meticulous servicing throughout its life; the vendor reports it has a fully stamped-up service book from new. “It has a lot of paperwork from the previous owners – for example, back in 2010, someone spent £2,700 recommissioning it.” During their ownership, they have carefully maintained it, with annual services and MOTs – and the car will be sold with a fresh 12-month MOT. ‘F229RGS’ has in the past six weeks, been fitted with a new clutch slave cylinder, new cooling fan and new starter motor to prepare it for sale. The vendor adds that they have replaced the engine’s belts in line with Porsche workshop requirements – the first time in 2018, and once again in December 2024, with an invoice of £2,300 confirming this. The car has two keys, a spare wheel, jack and tool kit. It also has the original Porsche-supplied handbook still in its period leather folder. This 1988 car is a later 2.7-litre version, which was only produced for a few years and therefore is becoming rare today. The odometer reads 172,000 miles, which makes it ‘barely run in’, experts will attest. The Porsche 944 was introduced in 1982 as a development from the 1970s 924. Inspired by a wide-body 924 Carrera GT prototype, it was much more muscular, with more contoured wings and a wider, more planted rear. Crucially, it had a bespoke Porsche engine – a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that was essentially half a 928 V8. It continued to use the 924’s transaxle setup, and was constantly developed throughout its lifetime, including the arrival in 1985 of a much more contemporary and premium-feeling interior. The engine was enlarged to 2.7 litres and, later, 3.0-litres, and it was also turbocharged. Its popularity saw Porsche produce more than 163,000 944 by the time it was replaced by the 968 in 1991. In summary: · 1988 Porsche 944 offered at No Reserve · Fully-stamped service book from new · Highly original example Note from the Auctioneer: A team member has reported that the car is overheating.
Registration – YNP 14G Chassis No. – P1K5564BW M.O.T. – Exempt Odometer – 72,964 1969, from which ‘YNP14G’ hails, was the last year of production of the Daimler V8 250. Its chassis number reveals it to be just 216 cars from the last right hand drive example produced. As such ‘YNP14G’ represents the final, facelifted iteration of this luxury sports saloon with its slimline bumpers, overriders and padded dash top roll. Essentially a rebadged MKII Jaguar, the 2.5 V8 as it was known at launch in1962, became the first Daimler to be offered on Jaguar underpinnings and the last to feature a Daimler engine. And what an engine. ‘YNP14G’ is fitted with the highly prized 2.5-litre V8, Edward Turner designed powerplant mated to a three speed Borg Warner type D1/D2 automatic transmission. Presenting today with a sensible, seemingly genuine 72,964 miles recorded, with less than 2,000 of those added since 2018. ‘YNP14G’ has been the subject of a thorough restoration a little over 10 years ago. This included professionally stripping and respraying the body shell. A replacement gearbox was fitted in 1978, a stainless steel exhaust installed around 4,000 miles ago together with the power steering system being reconditioned, and a new prop shaft bearing fitted. The front brakes were overhauled at the same time, while the rear brakes were replaced around 1,000 miles ago. In the last few months two new rear tyres have been fitted, a service with new engine oil and filter has been undertaken and a modern, spin-on oil filter conversion performed. All wheel arches have been cleaned and re-undersealed as a precautionary measure. ‘YNP14G’ is offered complete with an extensive file of provenance providing paperwork, which includes original handbooks and radio operating instructions as well as the service book with a full 28 stamps inside. All the old MOTs are included, as are the original Daimler documents with service chart. ‘YNP14G’ presents very well in the charming period hue of Ascot Fawn. This together with just the right amount of chrome brightwork, the signature Daimler fluted radiator cowl and the distinctive “partial spats” at the rear ensure that this Daimler saloon remains a real head turner today. The interior is veritable sea of crimson, box pleated leathers, walnut veneers, chromed fittings and sumptuous wool carpeting. The originality quotient is appealingly high and the overall condition of ‘YNP14G’ is vendor rated as “good” throughout. What a rare and tempting example of this exclusive Daimler sports saloon. In summary: · One of the last Daimler V8 250s to leave Browns Lane · Benefitting from an earlier, thorough restoration and in a fine overall condition · Complete with a comprehensive and instructive paperwork archive
Registration – 7890 VW Chassis No. – WVWZZZ1YZ4M332919 M.O.T. – January 2026 Odometer – 24,000 This 2004 Volkswagen Beetle is one of those ultra-desirable and oh-so-rare cars – a genuine one lady owner from new example. A 1.6-litre petrol version in gleaming red with a grey fabric interior, it has religiously received an annual service – with a full 20 stamps recorded in the service book. With an odometer reading just 24,000 miles, it has two keys, all the original manuals within the book pack, along with the original tool kit and original radio. The vendor is happy to confirm the car has been “meticulously maintained” and will come with a 12-month MOT. ‘7890VW’ is a Category C write-off, which the vendor explains was due to a minor fire in 2014. “The starter motor got stuck, but fortunately the bonnet was open. We have picture evidence of the fire; there was no damage to any part of the vehicle, and it only caught the edge of the wiring loom. It was just two wires and the wiring loom that needed to be replaced, nothing else.” They confirm the engine, transmission and electrics are all now in top-grade ‘excellent’ condition. The ’Volkswagen New Beetle’ was one of the first so-called retro revivals. First seen as a concept in 1994, the production car was revealed in 1997 to begin production 1998. Derived from the Mk4 Volkswagen Golf, the charming exterior style was unique, as was the open-plan art-deco interior. There was even a flower vase on the dashboard. Using Golf mechanicals ensured it was reliable and cheap to run, and the model became even more appealing in 2003 with the launch of a New Beetle Convertible. Today, this popular car is becoming an increasingly recognised modern classic in its own right. In summary: 2004 Volkswagen Beetle has covered just 24,000 miles One lady owner Meticulously maintained with annual servicing and 20 service stamps

RAF Pilots' Handbook of the Cairo-Baghdad Route. Royal Air Force Pilots' Handbook of the Cairo-Baghdad Route, HMSO, revised (i. e. second) edition, January 1926, 12 double-page colour air-route maps, Appendix I & II contained in rear pocket, illustrations, a few light stains, previous owner inscriptions erased from front cover verso, 'Notes for Pilots Reconnoitring Tribal Areas in Iraq' booklet loosely inserted (with 2 leaves detached, some stains), original wallet-style cloth, spine faded with small splits, front flap splitting along fold, a little bowed with light stains, 8voQTY: (1)NOTE:The second edition, the first was published in 1923, and the third edition in 1929. All editions are rare. The preface states 'This book has been compiled with the object of providing pilots using the air route between Cairo and Baghdad, with a concise, and at the same time adequate compendium of instructions, orders and notes of general information which can be easily handled and referred to in the air.''In 1921, Winston Churchill, then secretary of state for the colonies was outraged that letters from London to Baghdad were taking 28 days. Much too slow for running an empire. An airmail line would cut that to under nine, and serve as a critical link in a path extending from Europe to India and eventually Australia. The missing piece was Cairo to Baghdad, 860 miles - and 540 of that was flat hardpan desert... The solution - an unsophisticated one - was to simply mark a line along the ground. Pilots could follow it, a downed plane could be found near it, and fuel caches could be placed along it...' (Graham Chandler in Air and Space magazine, June 2018). After the exhaustive groundwork was completed, the inaugural flight of two bombers (a DH-9 and DH-10) was made on June 23, 1921, the Royal Air Force handing over the route to Imperial Airways in 1926.

A fine and rare example of the one ounce Penny of Scotland commemorating Adam Smith. The portrait of Adam Smith is after the James Tassie medallion of 1787, which is described by John M. Gray in James Bonar’s Catalogue of the Library of Adam Smith, 1932, p. xxi: ‘The head, which appears turned in pure profile to the right of the spectator, shows a particularly full forehead, a full nose, slightly aquiline in its curve; a long thin upper lip, and a lower lip that protrudes a little; and a firm, well-shaped chin and jaw. The eyebrow is strongly curved, the upper eyelid heavy and drooping, the eyeball particularly prominent; and beneath the lower eyelid the skin is loose and wrinkled. A wig is worn, tied behind in a bag with ribbons, showing small curls in front, and two large curls at the side which cover and conceal the ear.’ The only other identified recorded portraits of Adam Smith before this penny token are the Tassie medallion of 1787, two etched portraits by John Kay of 1787 and 1790 and a 'very poor unsigned transcript in line' (Gray) after Tassie in the Scots Magazine of 1796.
