Lord Nelson Interest, a wax relief profile portrait of Horatio Viscount Nelson by Catherine Andras, 1805, modelled in light brown wax, signed and dated under the epaulette C. Andras, 1805, mounted on black and contained in a fitted black lacquer frame with gilt metal surround surmounted with a coronet, height of portrait 7.5cm, frame 18 by 16cm Note: Catherine Andras, together with her adoptive father, Robert Bowyer, and John Whichelo were the last three artists to capture Nelson at Merton in September 1805. Andras’s profile was immediately popular and drew praise from Lady Hamilton, and the Dean & Chapter of Westminster Abbey commissioned their life-size wax effigy to compete with Nelson’s tomb at St. Paul’s as a direct consequence. The profile was also much imitated by other artists, such as Tassie, for use on medallions.

Portrait of Lieutenant General Sir William Nicolay (1771-1842), Royal Engineers, watercolour and gouache with pencil, on card, oval half-length portrait, half-profile to left, of a young military gentleman wearing a blue coat with epaulette on right shoulder, and a top hat with a bearskin crest embellished with rosette, 128 x 97mm (5 x 3.75ins), oval ebonised frame glazed, label on verso with printed memorial to the sitter, and a note added in late 19th century manuscript detailing his wifeQty: (1)NOTESLieutenant General Sir William Nicolay was a British army officer present at the Battle of Waterloo. The printed memorial on the verso reads: 'He served his sovereign and country, with honor and distinction for a period of 52 years. In India, with the Royal Artillery; in the West Indies, with the Royal Engineers; in the Peninsula and at Waterloo, in command of the Royal Staff Corps. also, as Governor and Commander in Chief of the following colonies: of Dominica from 1824 to 1831; of St. Christopher, Nevis, Auguilla, and the Virgin Islands in 1832; of Mauritius and its Dependencies from 1833 to 1840.' In this portrait, which likely dates from his service in India, William Nicolay is wearing the uniform of the Royal Engineers. The distinctive type of headdress - a top hat with a bearskin crest - is seen in portraits and paintings relating to the Siege of Seringapatam in 1792, where Nicolay served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers.

Special Force India Command.'Special Force is a new formation, composed of personnel of the very highest physical and military standards. To have belonged to it is a great honour. as you will have read in the papers, the Force was put into action in the heart of Burma, from the air, and its only links with the base in India are wireless and aircraft, the latter operating from hastily improvised strips in the jungle. To accept, without question, orders that led to such isolation from comfortrest and safety, and to undergo the extreme hazards, hardships and strain of the campaign, called for more loyalty to the cause, and more self-sacrifice than is demanded of men in the more normal organisations in the service. Many people at home are proud of the fact that their sons and husbands are members of the Commandos, or the Airborne Divisions, or are in Parachute Units. I can assure you that the tasks of the Special Force embody all the riskes attendant to these corps, with the added load that our operations are carried out for far longer periods in hostile territory, and in far worse climatic conditions, and against an enemy no less tenacious than the Germans. In short, your son undertook cheerfully and with no thought of self, a task that ranks with ranks with the most hazardous and difficult asked of any man in this war.All ranks join in offering to you our deepest sympathy and in telling you of our admiration for our late comrade, whom we will always honour and respect'.The lot comprises additional items as follows: A photograph of a letter he wrote to his mother .
