Maximus wore an epaulette on his right shoulder during his Colosseum fight against the undefeated gladiator Tigris of Gaul (Sven-Ole Thorsen).The epaulette is made of intentionally weathered leather, with curved ends and a raised silver-painted edging. A metal loop fastening is attached to the lining at both ends, and the lot comes presented on a custom-made display. There are signs of production use and remnants of sand from filming. Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a collection of 19th and 20th century buttons and uniform parts. Comprising a collection of buttons, 16 gilt examples each centered with a shamrock enclosed in a crowned garter belt, includes ducal and earls coronets; and three white metal buttons with a crowned shamrock; also a green velvet tunic collar with gilt shamrocks and a black epaulette embroidered with a gilt shamrock border. While there were Lord Lieutenants appointed to each county there was only one Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (or more correctly Lieutenant General and General Governor of Ireland) at any time. Scarce.

He served at the Battle of Omdurman and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in 1892, rising to Brevet Major in 1902 while serving in the Boer War. Although he retired shortly afterwards at the outbreak of the First World War he re-joined the army serving as Second in Command to Cameron of Locheil who raised and commanded the 5th Cameron’s. It was when in command of the 5th Cameron’s he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

A Victorian Epaulette to the Military Knights of Windsor, with gilt metal crescent enclosing a raised bullion thread embroidered shield below the VR cypher and with bullion embroidered star to the Most Honourable Order of the Bath GCB, on a black wool field with gold lace border, the reverse lined in black wool and with RIGHT label, in a black japanned tin Provenance:-The epaulette was worn by the vendor's 3rd great-uncle John Loraine White. He was born in Gibraltar on 17 February 1789, the son of Captain John White, an Army surgeon. He enlisted in the Army and served in the 3rd Battalion, 14th (The Buckinghamshire) Regiment of Foot, in various engagements during the Peninsula War and later at Waterloo with his company 'Captain J.L. White's Company'. Later, he served in the Ionian Islands Militia and by the 1861 census he was Barrack Master at the Grenadier Guards barracks in London. By 3 March 1866 (Aldershot Military Gazette) he had been appointed a Military Knight of Windsor, a position he held until his death in the Army Officers' Hospital in London on 13 March 1879 in his 91st year.

Tunic of Volunteer Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria. A fine, rare and important example of scarlet melton cloth with white piped Royal Blue facings to the cuffs and collar. To each breast and skirt eight silver embroidered oakleaf scrolls with frog-drop loops, five above the waist, top five on the left side retain a silvered mounted button; those on the skirt have none. The frog-drop loops are repeated to the collar and the cuffs. Twist silver cord epaulette to left shoulder. Minor old moth and service wear. .

Royal Company of Archers Queen Bodyguard for Scotland Victorian full dress coatee etc. A fine rare example of dark green Melton cloth, with dark green velvet facing to the high collar and cuffs. Each richly embroidered with thistle pattern gold embroidery, the latter also with gilt buttons, which are repeated to the double line of 17 buttons to the front (one absent). The tails again with velvet turn backs, thistle pattern gold embroidery skirt ornaments and gold embroidery thistle tail ornaments. .... Complete with impressive box pattern green velvet epaulettes each with bullion gilt wire crescent encircling a padded cushion embroidered with a Scottish thistle and title. The thistle embroidery is repeated to the strap of the epaulette and incorporated three arrows. Both complete with original fire gilt mounted button and with fine twist wire tassels ... Together with dark green Melton overalls with 2 inch wide gold thistle pattern lace down the seams. Bullion remains fresh and bright. Minor age wear.
