Impressive Portrait Painting Attributed to Captain Edmund Butterworth 3rd Royal Lancashire Militia Painted by E Greenwood (1808-74) in 1851, the oil on canvas portrait shows Butterworth in full military dress uniform with high collar, single winged epaulette, white cross belt with regimental cross belt plate to the centre and regimental pattern coatee buttons. Painting shows the subject as a young man. Housed in a gilt decorative frame. No visible signature, but not been inspected outside of the frame. Details of the sitter and the artist are inked to the reverse of the canvas. The canvas measures 64 x 76cms, frame 84 x 98cms. Painting shows evidence of conservation and has a receipt to confirm this. We are unsure of the age of this painting, we advise all interested parties to arrange personal viewing to satisfy themselves as to the age and condition. Due to size the item is sold as seen. We are not able to offer in house post and packing on this lot, specialist shipping required or personal collection. At the time of going to press, we have only been able to find one record of Edmund Butterworth’s service and that is his appointment as a Captain in the 3rd Royal Lancashire Militia. It would appear that he did not serve in any other regiments and was not involved in any overseas service. More detailed research required. Worcestershire Militia Junior Officer's Single Epaulette, c.1800-20. A very fine and rare example, the strap with pointed finial in silver lace, the raised outline in gilt and blackened metal lace, the strap embellished with a large eight-pointed bullion and sequin star, this with a raised centre circle, ‘Worcester Regt.’ on a yellow silk ground, in the centre the Crown on a red cloth ground. The fringe of silver lace bullions on a red silk ground, the strap lined with red silk and retaining the original cloth ties for the coatee. Lacking finial button, one bullion with a slight sprain otherwise very good condition £300-£400

Sold together with a photocopy letter of attribution from Frontier Medals and Collectables, of Hong Kong, stating that the medals were purchased directly from the recipient. Frank H. Davies served as Secretary of the Cardiff West Branch of the Glamorgan British Red Cross. William Williams was born 30 November 1899, and was employed in 1939 as a coal hewer, residing at 42 Bute Street, Aberdare.

There is a small patch of brown staining to the sitter's waistcoat (visible in the online illustration) and just to the right of this there are one or two very small spots of loss (also visible in the online illustration). Light rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges. Unexamined out of glazed frame. The mount generally in good condition commensurate with age.
