FOLLOWER OF ALBRECHT DURER Second half of the 16th century St. John the Evangelist Oil on copper, 10 x 10 cm This picture was painted by an anonymous follower of Albrecht Dürer, working in the mid-16th century, who has clearly mastered the technique of painting in oil on copper. The artist’s highly graphic and clean rendering of the figure’s facial features unmistak- ably echoes the style of Dürer in his engrav- ings. The silky, irridescent red drapery is also handled with enormous skill. The picture’s small size suggests that it may be a fragment belonging to a cover designed for a Gospel Book or for a work of private devotion in the shape of a small, portable illu- mination.

MANNER OF ALBRECHT DURER (1471-1528) SELF PORTRAIT, AGED 32 The artist depicted half length, wearing a white shirt and cap, a russet cape at his left shoulder, bears monogram and inscription IMAGO ALBERTI DURERI/ AETATIS SUAE 32 1503, oil on panel, unframed 32.5 x 26cm. * Durer executed four pioneering self portraits in 1484 (a silverpoint drawing, Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum), 1493 (Paris, Louvre),1498 (Madrid, Prado)and 1500 (Munich, Alte Pinakothek). This composition derives directly from the 1498 portrait with similar clothing and posture but has been `updated` to suggest how Durer may have looked in 1503. The panel has been planed verso and cradled. It appears to have extensions of approx 2.5cm. at each side but the picture was probably executed in the 17th or 18th Century.
