Sight (t'Gesicht), Smell (De Reuck) & Taste (De Smaek), from the series The Five Senses (De Vijf Zintuigen), circa 1642-1650, together 3 etchings on laid paper by Jan Both after his brother Andries, with foolscap watermark to each, numbered 1, 3 & 5 lower left or lower right, plate size 224 x 176 mm (8.8 x 6.9 ins) and similar, with margins, (the first plate with upper left corner repaired and extreme lower left corner with slight loss, just touching plate mark), early 19th century ink ownership initials WC to lower right corner of each plate, and inscription in brown ink to verso of the first plate with the Bartsch reference and '1829 WE Josi's sale 5 Pcs N 160' Barsch 11-15. Provenance: Christian Josi (died 1828), printmaker and art dealer, who inherited the collections of Cornelis Ploos van Amstel in 1800. Sold Christie's, March 1829. William Esdaile (1758-1837), banker and collector, who lived on Clapham Common, and whose picture collection included works by Durer, Ostade, Rubens, Ruisdael, Richard Wilson and Gainsborough. (3)

The Sea Monster (Das Meerwunder), circa 1498, copper engraving on laid paper, without watermark, a very good, strong and clear impression, trimmed to or just inside the platemark, the inner border line intact, small (1 mm) hole to extreme lower right of the image, a few other minor marks and unobtrusive stains, otherwise in good condition, sheet size 252 x 191 mm (9.9 x 7.5 ins), together with 6 other 16th century German engravings and woodcuts by Aldegrever (3), Durer (2), and Altdorfer (1), 12 17th & 18th century engravings by G.F. Schmidt, Claude Le Lorrain, Bartolozzi, Cond‚, Dickenson, Saenredam (after Goltzius), 2 portraits from Boissard's Bibliotheca Chalcographica 1650, and J. Van Campen (after Giorgione), 3 19th century etchings by Herkomer, Richard Lane and Paul Rajon, 3 original drawings by E. Griset, Henry Corbauld and Richard Lane after A.E. Chalon, one 19th century unsigned circular oil study, 6 19th century watercolour landscapes, including one by George P. Popkin of Llyn Idwal, North Wales, dated 1850, and one inscribed to verso H. A 19th century sepia coloured study of a renaissance style group of the Virgin and Child in a garden setting, in the manner of Durer, with blind embossed stamp to lower right corner, 23 x 16 cm approx unframed and together with old backing board with German gallery label and presentation inscription dated Christmas 1936, together with a 19th century printed auction bill for a sale at Castle Morton, Worcestershire for a house and farmland, 44 x 28 cm in simple black frame
Celestial Chart. Durer (Albrecht), [Hemisphaerium australe] published Nuremberg, 1515 but later 3rd state, circa 1781, uncoloured woodblock on laid of a celestial projection of the southern hemisphere, blindstamp of an unidentified coat of arms on verso, old central horizontal fold, scattered spotting, pencil annotations below map, diameter 370 mm, sheet size 565 x 425 mm Bartsch 150. Durer's star maps were the first to be published in Europe. This later state lacks the border decoration which comprised of dedications to Stabius, Heinfogel and himself, together with dedications, acknowledgements and the coats of arms of the Archbishop of Salzburg, Cardinal Matth„us Lang, and the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I. The latter being the patron of Stabius and Drer. This state also has the 'AD' Durer monogram added below Piscis Notius. The original woodblock for this print is held at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin. See Daniel Crouch Rare Books, Catalogue 6, item 3 for a copy of the first issue with original colour. Rare. (1)
A large Limoges enamel Plaque of the Crucifixion, circa 1530, finely painted in polychrome and details in gold with a scene modelled on the engraved passion of the Durer. Translucent salmon coloured counter enamel. In an ornate composition frame. An area of restoration lower right but generally in good condition. In style and palette this enamel is closely related to three enamels from the Passion series in the Musee des Beaux Arts at Orleans, dated to the first third of the 16th century, 5 1/2'' x 6 3/4''.

L’opera evoca oggetti e opere nate per i colti viaggiatori del Grand Tour Scatola in legno di palissandro contenente al suo interno un rilievo in cera e uno identico in gesso da un’incisione di Heinrich Aldegrever (Paderborn, 1502 - Soest, 1560 ca), Rea Silvia (1532) Francia o Germania, XIX° secolo; dimensioni totali cm 28 x 21,5 x 7; rilievi cm 22 x 16. I due rilievi contenuti nella scatola, identici per soggetto ma differenti nell’impiego dei materiali usati - il gesso e la cera, sono basati su una stampa di Heinrich Aldegrever del 1532 raffigurante Rea Silvia, madre dei gemelli Romolo e Remo fondatori di Roma le cui vicende sono raccontate nel I° libro Ab urbe condita diTito Livio.Figlia di Numitore,un discendente di Enea.Un giorno il dio Marte la incontrò in un bosco e se ne invaghì,seducendola;dall’unione nacquero i due gemelli, che però furono destinati alla morte da suo zio Amulio, usurpatore del trono di Numitore, che non voleva discendenze maschili. Rea Silvia mise i gemelli in una cesta e li abbandonò nel Tevere. Furono trovati da una lupa che li allevò, ed in seguito furono cresciuti da un pastore. Rispetto all’incisione la figura in primo piano di Rea Silvia è più piccola e la descrizione del terreno e dell’albero sulla destra è semplificata.Anche il cartiglio con l’iscrizione in alto a sinistra ha una sagoma diversa e non vi compare il monogramma dell’artista. Con le stesse differenze rispetto all’incisione, nelle raccolte del Victoria & Albert Museum di Londra c’è un rilievo, pressoché coevo all’incisione, in pietra calcarea di Solnhofen, per inciso delle stesse dimensioni dei nostri, dello scultore tedesco Loy Hering (Kaufbeuren, 1484 ca - Eichstätt,1555) (N.
