Talish rug fragment, south east Caucasus second half 19th century, 6ft.5in. x 3ft.3in. 1.96m. x 1m. Overall wear, heavy in small areas, slight losses both sides, outer guard missing both ends, reduced in length by lateral cut across upper end. Leaving aside its condition, the colour, 'drawing', weave and wool of this rug are all of the highest quality.

Lot 1

Unusual and attractive Shahsavan (?) band, embroidered in wool on coarse undyed wool ground, north west Iran or south Caucasus second half 19th century, 14ft.3in. x 1ft.2in. 4.34m. x 0.36m. The attribution of this rare and intriguing weaving is somewhat speculative. In many ways, the style of animal 'drawing' is close to that of both the Shahsavan and the Qashqa'i and the human figures are also reminiscent of the Persepolis-style figures found on many Fars weavings; however, the overall effect seems closer to the Shahsavan style. The intended function of the piece is also speculative.
