Fong Leng started a fashion boutique in 1969 in a Drugstore, Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam. In 1971 she moved to larger premises at the P.C. Hooftstraat and called it Studio Fong Leng. She is mostly known for her extravagant cloak dresses. Fong Leng’s most notable client was Mathilde Willink, the divorced wife of the Dutch magic realist painter Carel Willink. The materials Fong Leng uses for her creations are leather, suede, silk, marabou feathers, and fur. She uses techniques like application, incrustation, quilting, matelassé, smocking and pleating. Most designs have figurative images on them. Fong Leng is most famous by her cloak dresses for women. High society and extravagant women like Mathilde Willink and Kate Bush wore clothes by Fong Leng. In 1975 the Centraal Museum in Utrecht was the first museum to collect Fong Leng’s work. The museum bought it straight out of Fong Leng’s studio, so it had never been worn by anybody. The museum paid 10,000 guilders for the Straalmantel. Up to this day there are numerous museums that have creations made by Studio Fong Leng in their collections. For instance: Amsterdam Museum, Museum Rotterdam, and Kunstmuseum Den Haag. During the years there have been several exhibitions organised solely devoted to Fong Leng's designs. TWO 17TH CENTURY ROYALIST PORTRAIT MINIATURE JEWELSThe first depicting King Charles I, the Martyr (1600-1649), standing before his crown, wearing the sash and badge of the Order of the Garter over a suit of armour, the second depicting William III (1650-1702) holding an orb with Mary II (1662-1694) before a skull, both painted on vellum in pie-crust mounts, the reverse of the mount holding William and Mary engraved with initials, JM, lengths: 1.9cm - 2.3cm (2)Footnotes:After the death of King Charles I in 1649, commemorative jewellery in the form of rings, lockets and slides, was produced in great numbers. The jewels were worn by Royalists in memory of Charles I. A few had concealing lids, as many supporters of the royalist cause wished to keep their allegiance secret. Some were presented by the exiled Queen Henrietta Maria to Royalist supporters in appreciation of their continuing loyalty and financial backing. The tradition for wearing images of Stuart monarchs remained popular during times of political and religious uncertainty, periods of national mourning and also celebration, such as the Restoration of the Stuart monarchy in 1660 when these jewels could be worn more openly. The miniatures were not painted from life but derived from earlier full-scale oil portraits. The miniature of Charles I in his suit of armour derives from Sir Anthony Van Dyck's circa 1638 portrait in the Hermitage Museum (inventory no. ГЭ-537).Prince William of Orange married Charles I's grand-daughter, Mary Stuart, the Princess Royal, in 1677. The couple were happily married and anointed joint sovereigns in 1689. Devastated by Mary's death, William ruled alone until his own death in 1702 from a riding accident. The skull in this Restoration portrait has been placed behind Mary to represent her early death from smallpox while William can be seen holding an orb in reference to his continuing reign. The image of William in a suit of armour and lace cravat derives from his circa 1685 portrait by Willem Wissing (Royal Collection inventory no. RCIN 405644). While a different colour, the design of Mary's dress, jewelled corsage and ermine cloak relate closely to her circa 1692-94 portrait attributed to Jan van der Vaart, which is held by the National Portrait Gallery (inventory no. NPG 197).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A GOLD LONGCHAIN, CIRCA 1820The multiple textured links decorated with lozenges and dot motifs, the later gem-set clasp applied with filigree detail, one green hardstone deficient, length 155cmFootnotes:The longchain rose in popularity after the Napoleonic Wars, when precious gems and metals were in short supply. The effect of heavy gold linking is deceptive as they were produced from thin gold sheet. They were also worn in a variety of ways - draped across shoulders, tucked into belts or pinned at the corsage to create eye catching festoons. The linking ranged vastly in size and texture with both engraved and embossed patterns and star motifs. The clasps were often more detailed with bead, burr and filigree detail, sometimes taking the form of a textured, gloved and gem-set hand. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Unique statuette en biscuit représentant une femme à l'éventail, Meissen, circa 1937 A unique Meissen biscuit figure of the lady with fan (Stehende Dame mit Fächer), circa 1937Modelled by Paul Scheurich, the lady with short waved hair wearing a clinging evening dress with pleated flounce on her left hip, her arms crossed with a large ostrich feather fan held to her right hip, on a square base, the side incised 'SCHEURICH 29', 46.5cm high, crossed swords mark in blue to the rear of the base, impressed crossed swords mark within a triangle, incised model number A 1224, impressed former numeral 50 for Hoberg (restoration to fingers on her left hand)Footnotes:Provenance: Heinrich Hoberg, Chief Repairer (Meister der Bossierer) at the Meissen manufactoryExhibited:Meissen, Museum der Meissen Porzellan-Stiftung, Paul Scheurich. Porzellangestalter Zeichner Grafiker, 6 March 2020-21 February 2021This model, together with five others by Scheurich, won the Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition of 1937, see Rafael 1995a, no.40.Scheurich modelled the figure in 1929 after spending several weeks in Paris in June and July, where he would have seen the newest fashions. In 1928 womens' dresses started becoming more form-fitting, incorporating asymmetrical hems, swags and ruffles. Scheurich must have been inspired by fashionable women he saw in Paris, modelling the figure in a gauzy dress with deep décolletage and narrow straps, a waterfall of pleats to one side of the skirt and a corsage applied to one shoulder. In her right hand is a large ostrich feather fan, a feature that was very much en vogue at the time. The cover of 'Le Petit Echo de la Mode' from 20 May 1928 shows an illustration that is strikingly similar and could have been the type of thing to inspire him. This style of dress even made its way across the sea and a gown by Chanel was illustrated in the Indianapolis Times on 9 June, 1928 (Noon Edition, p.9), where it was stated: 'A graceful side bow and a shoulder bouquet give charm to a raspberry chiffon evening gown of superb simplicity.'The manufactory made an advance payment for the model in July 1929 of RM 500, though Scheurich was working on several models and so the figure was delivered to the manufactory in March 1930 and the total price of RM 3,800 was paid in the following months. The first figure in porcelain was produced in Autumn 1930 and the first example sold in Spring 1931. Scheurich originally intended the figure to be produced only in white. According to the records of royalty payments, nine figures were sold by the end of 1944.A biscuit figure of the lady with fan was privately commissioned by Annelies von Ribbentrop, for which the chief repairer at the manufactory, Heinrich Hoberg, received his own example. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
