Gerahmt.Der 1912 als Sohn einer Aristokratenfamilie in Padangtegal, Bali, Indonesien, geborene Anak Agung Gde Sobrat gilt als einer der prominentesten Maler Indonesiens. Bereits in den 20er-Jahren kam Sobrat durch Künstler wie den Deutschen Walter Spies und den Niederländer Rudolf Bonnet mit der europäischen Leinwandmalerei in Kontakt. Motivisch schöpft Sobrat aus seiner Kindheit, in der er Schattenspielen und Ritualtänzen beiwohnte. Ein solcher Tanz ist der im vorliegenden Gemälde dargestellte Baris-Tanz in dem der Tanzende die Gefühle und Virilität des Kriegers vor der Schlacht zum Ausdruck bringt. In leuchtendem Kolorit stellt Sobrat den jungen Tänzer in voller Bewegung dar. Seine opulente Kleidung samt der ihn umwehenden Stoffbahnen (awiran), des umlaufenden Kragens (badong) und des aufwändigen Kopfschmucks gibt er ebenso minutiös wie farbenprächtig wieder, wie die nächtliche Szenerie, die den Tänzer umgibt und in der er fast zu verschwinden scheint.100 x 91,3 cmProvenienzAus einem Münchner Nachlass, in den 1970er-Jahren direkt beim Künstler erworben
