Drei balinesische Mädchen. 1956Öl auf Leinwand, in beschnitztem Künstlerrahmen. Unten rechts rot signiert und datiert: A. Sonnega '56.Inspirationsquelle für seine Malerei zog Sonnega aus seiner tiefen Zuneigung zu Bali und dessen Bewohner. Diese spiegelt sich in vielen Gemälden mit Einzeldarstellungen balinesischer Mädchen mit den für Bali typischen Frangipani-Blumen im Haar und pflockartigem Ohrschmuck wieder. Die vorliegende Arbeit unterscheidet sich jedoch von den übrigen Gemälden, da es drei junge Frauen in palastartigem Interieur zeigt. Obgleich es sich um ein Gruppenportrait handelt, wirken sie jeweils gleichgültig und abwesend und die Darstellung somit wie eine, in die Tiefe gestaffelte Komposition einzelner Portraits. Während das Mädchen im Vordergrund in einer Art verlorenem Profil aus dem Bild hinausschaut, ist das Mädchen im Mittelgrund als Brustbild dargestellt. Sie hält ein silbernes Kendi samt Schale vor der Brust. Solche Kendis wurden für Trinkwasser verwendet, zum Beispiel bei Hochzeitszeremonien. Der Körper des sich kämmenden Mädchens im Hintergrund ist hingegen fast vollständig wiedergegeben. A 20th century hardwood head and shoulders sculpture of Mahatma Ghandi, signed to base Dew Pasar.. Bali. Nadepanti. W. 26 cm high. (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The bust is in extremely good condition. It is very well carved. There are no splits, cracks or stress fractures to the timber and there are no significant scratches or marks. There are no significant nibbles or losses to the bottom edge. The condition is really extremely good.

In his sculptural representations, when part of a series depicting Vishnu's avatars, Vamana typically appears either as the giant Trivikrama or as the dwarven Brahmin, uncrowned and holding a wooden parasol. Both are quite different from the present example, which instead stems from a series depicting the twenty-four emanations (chaturvimshati keshava namas) of Vishnu described in the Mahabharata and Puranas. In his form as Vamana, Vishnu appears similarly pot-bellied and broad-faced, but also crowned, holding his attributes, and flanked by his wives. This representation is shown with a dagger in his belt as with an example in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (AC1993.54.1). Compare with a figure of Vamana in the Jhansi Museum (see Trivedi, 1983, fig. 16). Adrien Jean le Mayeur de Merpres (1880-1958) Belgian (resided Bali), Two Balinese dancers, signed bottom left, charcoal, pastel and body colour, 62 x 47 cm, in a contemporary carved hardwood frame and glazed, frame 69.5 x 54 cmPainting remains sealed inside the frame, but a small inspection suggests work painted on thin paper and not glued to a mount. Significant water marks to the top right and down the left side. Some other apparently washed-out areas. Evidence of some tears around the edge of the paper. Also signs of some previous creases in the paper. Work is not dated. Handed down to the vendor by his grandfather.
