A Late 19th/Early 20th Century French Gilt Brass and Champleve Enamel 'Four Glass' Mantel Clock by Vincenti & Cie, No.1900, the 3.5ins diameter gilt dial with Arabic numerals to the eight day two train movement with mercury compensated pendulum striking on a gong, contained in rectangular case with slightly domed top and champleve enamel columns to corners, inset with bevelled glass panels and on turned and reeded feet, 14.25ins highExternally the clock presents in good overall condition showing wear commensurate with age and usage. The gilt work is rather tarnished and sparse in places especially to the top. The enamel work appears to be in good condition. No obvious sign of previous damage or repair. All four glasses are in good condition. No signs of cracks or chips. The rear door functions correctly and latches. The mechanism appears complete although we cannot warrant the originality of all components. The pendulum is present and the mercury levels are about 50%. The enamel dial has numerous cracks in general. However the black Roman numerals are concise and the hands appear original. The key is present. The clock winds runs and sets but should be regarded as untested. Prospective bidders are strongly advised to study all images closely prior to bidding.

The firm of watchmakers and retailers of luxury goods, Sir John Bennett Limited, was established by John Bennett at 65 Cheapside, London in 1846. Sir John Bennett was a colourful character who became involved in machinations of the City of London Corporation serving as 'Sheriff of London and Middlesex' in 1871 and 'Lord Lieutenant of London' in 1872. He died in 1897 leaving the business in the hands of his successors trading as 'Sir John Bennett Limited', which continued well into the 20th century. Condition Report: Movement appears all-original with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements; it is also in clean working condition although it will require setting-up in beat. The dial has some slight repair/filling to the enamel around the regulation square at twelve o'clock as well as some more filling to the edge above the X numeral. Both of these repairs are not particularly noticeable when the bezel is closed. The case is in good original condition, the gilding is a little oxidised/muted through age and the castings have some edge wear however the case appears free form damage or repair.Clock is complete with pendulum and a winding key.Condition Report Disclaimer

The dial has wear/rubbing to the chapter ring mainly around the winding holes and is discoloured/dirty. The case is in good condition with no apparent/noticeable chips or cracks to the enamel. The surface retains traces of gilding within the castings but is generally cleaned back to brass with a coat of lacquer which is now starting to break-down/discolour.Clock is complete with pendulum and a winding key.Condition Report Disclaimer
