AN IMPORTANT PAIR OF EMERALD AND GEM-SET PENDENT EARRINGS, BY CHOPARD RED CARPET COLLECTION, 2017Each circular-cut emerald measuring approximately 18x18mm, within a heart-shaped purplish-blue titanium motif pavé-set throughout with circular-cut emeralds, tsavorites, blue sapphires, blue tourmalines and amethysts accented with brilliant-cut diamonds, suspended from a briolette cluster of similar stones and a pear-shaped amethyst surmount with further similarly-cut stones, mounted in 18K gold and titanium, signed Chopard, numbered, length 6cmThe legendary House of Chopard was founded in 1860 by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in the Swiss village of Sonvilier, focusing production on pocket watches and chronometers. Chopard revolutionised watch manufacture and lead the charge on creating and selling complete timepieces instead of just the mechanical movement which had been the industry standard. Chopard quickly rose to fame and could boast elite clients such as Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. After Chopards death in 1915 the business was led by his son Paul-Louis and grandson Paul-André. The father and son leadership expanded Chopards remit to create women’s wristwatches and by 1921 had grown enough to move the business to the larger town of Chaux-de-Fonds. Finally, in 1937 production was moved to Geneva, the city whose name has since so iconically appeared on the dials of Chopard watches. In 1963 Paul-André Chopard sold the family company to the much-admired horologist and goldsmith Karl Scheufele III. Under Scheufele’s leadership the brand grew in production and popularity at an astonishing rate.A watershed moment occurred for Chopard in 1976 when Scheufele, in collaboration with in-house designer Ronald Kurowski, released the first watch to feature free-floating diamonds within the face of the piece. The pleasing dance of the diamonds as one moved their wrist proved to be a huge success and Chopard pieces are still admired and sought after today for this innovative quality. The Happy Diamond Collection of 1985 continued this trend of free-floating diamonds and was inspired by Karl Scheufele’s daughter Caroline’s sketch of a clown with a “tummy full of diamonds”. This joy and exuberance are a mainstay of Chopard design and history.Chopard began their genius idea of collaborating with and sponsoring events for titans of industries, creating collections in tandem, in 1988 with their partnership with the legendary Mille Miglia sportscar race. Since then, Chopard have sponsored many events but most notably, and annually, the Cannes Film Festival. Sarah Greene includes Lot 178 in her favourite pieces from this auction, showing there is a natural affinity between celebrated actresses and pieces designed by Chopard.Lot 178 comes from the 2017 Red Carpet Collection which was designed for the year’s Cannes Film Festival and marked the 20th anniversary of Chopard’s connection to the glamorous and artistically driven awards. This collection, designed by Caroline Scheufele, featured bold, rich colours, and succeeded triumphantly in its goal to modernise the interpretation of red carpet jewellery. The teardrop shape of lot (44257-3) was noted and admired most for the sensuality it lends to the wearer, in addition to the kaleidoscope of colour that draws attention to the stunning piece.Speaking to jewellery journalist Katerina Perez, Caroline Scheufele explains:“In recent years, a sort of trend has emerged. Looks on the Red Carpet have become more fashionable and less classic. No one wants to wear a diamond solitaire or a ‘riviera’ necklace. Quite the opposite. Many actresses even experiment with ways to wear jewellery to reflect their own style. Take for example the attaching of brooches to the hair. These stars are more than happy when I include titanium jewellery in the Red Carpet collection as they seek something both incredibly light and bright. I would like to believe that I have somehow contributed to the shaping of Red Carpet trends,”Caroline Scheufele has certainly done more than contribute to Red Carpet trends, her collections are the trailblazers which dictate where jewellery design is heading and impacts all corners of the fashion world. The list of actresses who have worn pieces by Chopard in recent years only begins with Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Sharon Stone, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux, Penélope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o, Fan Bing Bing, Isabelle Huppert, and Jane Fonda. Condition Report:Emeralds: of bluish-green hue, medium to dark tone, facets are smooth - both well matched in size and colourPear amethysts: of purple hue, medium to dark tone, both well matched in size and colourNumbered 3295018 - 840563Minor signs of wear, overall in good conditionWith stick post for pierced and non pierced earsTotal gross weight approx. 27.9g

Lot 499

Property of a deceased estate c.1915 Triumph 3½HP Registration no. XD 1116Frame no. 264178Engine no. 83013 URR•Purchased in 1967•An older restoration•Circa 1915 frame, circa 1910 engineThe first Triumph motorcycle of 1902 used a Belgian Minerva engine, but within a few years the Coventry firm - originally a bicycle manufacturer founded by German immigrants Siegfried Bettman and Maurice Schulte - was building its own power units. The first of these - a 298cc single-cylinder sidevalve - arrived in 1904. This first engine was not without its weaknesses: pistons and bores wore out quickly and the curious 'tandem downtube' frame in which it was installed broke, but these shortcomings were soon sorted and within a couple of years 'Triumph' was a byword for reliability. The company was soon involved in racing, and the publicity generated by competition success - Jack Marshall won the 1908 Isle of Man TT's single-cylinder class for Triumph having finished second the previous year - greatly stimulated sales. By the outbreak of The Great War the marque's reputation for quality and reliability was well-established, leading to substantial orders for 'Trusty Triumphs' for British and Allied forces. The 3½hp model first appeared in 1907. Originally of 453cc, its sidevalve engine was enlarged to 476cc in 1908 and finally to 499cc in 1910 before being superseded by the 4hp model in 1914. The old-style continuation logbook of file shows that this machine's combination of a c.1915 frame and c.1910 engine has been together since at least 1965. The date of first registration recorded in the registration documents is 22nd April 1921, this being shortly after the introduction of the Roads Act of 1920, which required local councils to register all vehicles at the time of licensing and to allocate a separate number to each. (Many vehicles, although in existence for several years in some cases, were only registered for the first time after the Act's passing). The late owner purchased the Triumph at a Lincolnshire auction in 1967 for £66 (purchase receipt on file). An older restoration, the machine will require re-commissioning following a period of inactivity and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's authenticity, correctness, and mechanical condition prior to bidding. Additional paperwork consists of an old-style V5 and an HPI check sheet. The detached timing cover and primary drive case are included in the sale. Key not required.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1966 Austin Mini Cooper Mk. I (998cc) Transmission: manualMileage:69300These fabulous and popular little cars were designed in 1959 and were heralded as a new concept in car design. Little did they know or envisage what would become of these great models. With a monocoque shell, transversely mounted engine and front wheel drive, the new 'Mini' soon became popular across the world and to all types of individuals well healed or not! The potential for competition use was soon seen by John Cooper; he eventually persuaded BMC and the two worked together culminating in the birth of the Austin Mini Cooper and the Morris Mini Cooper in 1961. Victories in the 1964, 1965 and 1967 Monte-Carlo Rallies set the Mini on the road to fame but probably the greatest publicity was gained from their, somewhat unfair, disqualification for lighting irregularities in the 1966 event after coming in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. A more powerful Mini Cooper, dubbed the 'S', was developed in tandem and released in 1963.Offered here is a truly exceptional Mk. I Austin Cooper restored to its original specification. Such high quality restorations are usually reserved for only the very best Cooper S models, making this probably the best condition Cooper on the road. Restored from the ground-up in its original colours of Tweed Grey with an Old English White roof, this car wants for nothing. Such was the obsessive nature of the restoration, that there are an abundance of period correct details not often found on many Minis, that will surely please any Mini aficionado. A good example of this is the period correct, crimped exhaust silencer, fabricated because these items are no longer available. Indeed, throughout the extensive photographic record of the restoration, you can see that no stone has been left unturned in the pursuit of perfection and it is a pleasure to see such effort going into something other than an ‘S’. The history file shows that since its restoration in 2013 the engine was rebuilt in 2017 and has hardly done any mileage since. Such pride was taken in the restoration of this car that a full photo gallery of it can still be seen on the restorer’s website. The Heritage Certificate shows this car to have been originally completed on 10th February 1966 and despatched to Solihull Motor Company on 26th February 1966 with the only option added being a fresh-air heater.Supplied with the Heritage Certificate, history file, driver’s handbook and photographic record of its restoration. This unique and correct Cooper is offered from the private collection of Jamiroquai’s front man, Jay Kay.

To make an appointment, please contact Raphael Chatroux at rchatroux@freemansauction.comProvenanceCollection of William C. Sproul. His sale, Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, sale of January 26, 1949, Lot 65.Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, sale of April 2, 1975, Lot 161.(Presumably) acquired directly from the above sale. Private Collection, North Carolina.NoteHailing from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Daniel Ridgway Knight made his name through his paintings of idyllic country life. Spending the majority of his life in France he established his house and studio at Poissy along the Seine. Knight studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris under Marc Gabriel Charles Gleyre and later worked in the private studio of Ernest Meissonier (see Lot 57).Depicting three women in an overgrown garden next to a river, this work is a fine example of maybe his most popular subject: peasant women. The middle figure is waving a white kerchief signaling to an unseen character. The beautiful young peasant women seem to exist in perfect harmony with the scenery around them. The lush garden in tandem with the muted light creates the feeling of a serene country evening and a simple way of living. Knight’s work reflected the French demand for paintings of pastoral charm, which was also favored by puritan collectors in the United States. His accolades include a silver medal and Cross of the Legion of Honor from the Exposition Universelle, Paris in 1889, and a gold medal of honor from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art, Philadelphia in 1893. Knight died in Paris, his son Louis Aston Knight would go on to become a well-known painter in his own right. The apparently unlined canvas in overall very good condition. The evident excess of varnish has yellowed in some parts, thus commanding a clean, which would benefit the overall apperance of the work. Scattered droplets in the sky at center and upper center (surface soiling), along with brown dots at upper left and upper right corners, which should be easily removed. Surface cracks (age related) present throughout the composition, mostly visible in the sky. Examination under UV light does not reveal any major sign of inpainting apart from a 1 in. diagonal repaired scratch at bottom left corner. c.1914 Triumph 3½hp Motorcycle CombinationFrame no. 215087Engine no. 15461For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•Purchased in 1994•An older restoration•1914 frame, 1911 engine•Two-speed transmissionThe first Triumph motorcycle of 1902 used a Belgian Minerva engine, but within a few years the Coventry firm - originally a bicycle manufacturer founded by German immigrants Siegfried Bettman and Maurice Schulte - was building its own power units. The 3.5hp model first appeared in 1907. Originally of 453cc, its sidevalve engine was enlarged to 476cc in 1908 and finally to 499cc in 1910 before being superseded by the 4hp model in 1914. An older restoration that still presents well, this Lot incorporates a frame dating from 1914 and an earlier (1911) engine. The machine was carrying the UK registration mark 'JS 528' when purchased at a UK auction in April 1994, a registration originally belonging to another Veteran-era Triumph and to which it was not entitled. Notable features include a two-speed transmission with clutch and a Powell & Hanmer lighting set (including the sidecar lamp). It should be noted that these vehicles have either been on display in the museum or kept in store since Peter and Ulrike passed away. Their present mechanical condition is not known; accordingly, perspective bidders must satisfy themselves with regards to their condition, completeness, correctness, or otherwise prior to bidding.

c.1903 Humber 2¾hp Olympia Tandem ForecarFrame no. None Visible (see text)Engine no. 1897 (see text)For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•Acquired in 1998•London-Brighton Run participant•Eligible for the Pioneer Run and Banbury Run•VCC Certificate of DateWith a background in bicycle manufacture, Humber began motor vehicle production as early as 1896, displaying motorcycles at 'The International Horseless Carriage Exhibition' that year. The production of Humber vehicles was carried on at both Beeston, Nottingham and at Coventry, there being some considerable rivalry between the two factories, the Beeston works being reserved generally for production of the more expensive models. The Humber Olympia motor tandem is an ideal vehicle for two riders. All control is in the hands of the rear rider while the passenger is in the front, out of reach of dust and the exhaust gases, and conversation is easy. The front seat is most comfortably hung on springs and is excellently upholstered, luxurious to even the most delicate. The steering is unaffected by the absence or the presence of a passenger, and is easier than that of an ordinary tricycle. Thus did Humber describe their 1903 offering. The air-cooled engine was built under Phelon & Moore licence, featuring an automatic inlet valve and a bore and stroke of 80x77mm, giving a capacity of 403cc.One of the earliest surviving Humbers, this tandem forecar was purchased at Brooks' Olympia auction in December 1998 (Lot 686). The vehicle was described as follows: 'Restored in 1989, this machine has regularly completed the Brighton Run and in 1995 was ridden from Paris to Bordeaux commemorating the Centenary of that early motor race and proving the reliability of this early machine.' The Humber had also successfully completed the 1998 London-Brighton Run. The machine is VCC dated as 1903 and is also eligible for the Sunbeam MCC's Pioneer Run from Epsom to Brighton, as well as the VMCC's Banbury Run. Notable features include Lucas lamps, a Desmo horn, and RAC London to Brighton plaques from 1993 and 1994. Accompanying paperwork includes photocopied technical literature, a selection of photographs, VCC Certificate of Date, some expired MoTs, and an old UK V5 registration document (registration 'DS 7442'). It should be noted that the dating certificate lists the frame number as '134871', as does the V5, while the somewhat indistinct engine number appears to be '1897' ('1297' on the aforementioned documents).• Acquise en 1998• Participant au Londres-Brighton• Éligible aussi aux Pioneer et au Banbury Runs• Certificat de datation du VCCUn des plus anciens modèles Humber survivants, cet avant-train en tandem a été acquis à la vente Brooks à l'Olympia en décembre 1998 (Lot 686). For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website

1901 Dürkopp 7hp Rear-entrance Tonneau Motorwagen Chassis no. 117For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•Rare early survivor of a relatively short-lived make•One of a believed two survivors from 1901•Formerly part of a private collection in its home town of Bielefeld•Part of the Bühner Collection since 2002•London-Brighton Veteran Car Run participantProducers of (mainly) industrial sewing machines, the Dürkopp company still exists today as Dürkopp-Adler. Dürkopp's origins date back to 1867 when Nikolaus Dürkopp started his sewing machine business in the German city of Bielefeld, a centre for bicycle manufacture. Dürkopp owned another plant in Graz, Austria, and in the 1880s both factories began producing bicycles to meet the Europe-wide boom in this form of transportation. The firm's first automobile followed in 1898. Constructed along Panhard lines, these first Dürkopps featured front-mounted vertical twin-cylinder engines, final drive by chains, and wheels of unequal size. A much smaller car with a rear-mounted engine was on offer in 1899, featuring tandem seating and wire wheels. Motorcycle production commenced around 1901. Dürkopp's range expanded and by 1903 consisted of some five models ranging from an 8PS twin to a 40PS four, while a six-cylinder car was shown for the first time that year. In Britain the importer F Watson marketed Dürkopps under the 'Watsonia' brand name. By 1914 Dürkopp had produced a succession of large-capacity fours, the ultimate being the 13-litre Type DG of 1912, but these sold in limited numbers, prompting the introduction of new smaller models known as the 'Knipperdolling' range. After WWI, the firm concentrated mainly on medium-size cars of around 2 litres, plus a small number of larger types. Production of cars ceased in 1927 but commercial chassis continued to be available for a few more years. Production of motorcycles had ceased in 1914 and would not resume until 1949, Dürkopp's most famous product of the post-war period being the immensely successful Diana scooter. This rare early Dürkopp automobile has been part of the Bühner Collection since 2002, having previously formed part of a private collection in its native Bielefeld, where it was also on loan for a period of time to the local history Museum. It is believed that before then the car had survived many years of barn storage, and numerous photographs attest to its remarkably original condition prior to its sympathetic restoration. The car even comes with a copy of its original Bielefeld registration from 1902, with the number 'X530'.While in the custody of Peter and Ulrike Bühner the car participated successfully in many events, among them the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run in 2004, 2007 and 2008 (programmes on file). § GILBERT BAYES (BRITISH 1872-1953) 'ANATKH' (DESTINY), 1918 patinated bronze on a slate base, model for The Ramsgate War Memorial, signed and dated Dimensions:bronze 56cm (22in) high; including base 59cm (23 1/4in) highNote: Literature: Irvine, Louise and Atterbury, Paul, 'Gilbert Bayes: Sculptor 1872-1953', Richard Dennis, 1988, p. 124 illus.Note: British sculptor Gilbert Bayes (1872-1953) rose to prominence in tandem with a burgeoning demand for the arts. In the wake of WWI, there emerged a desire to erect commemorative statues which symbolised the trauma of war and the tragic loss of life. Bayes' workshop was at the forefront of the public's stimulation of a war memorial movement, representing one of the greatest examples of national patronage of sculpture. Exhibitions were held at the Victoria & Albert Museum and Royal Academy to aid local communities and regions in their choice of sculptors, materials and subject matter. Bayes’ emotive work, Destiny, was shown at the Royal Academy in 1916, and subsequently used as the centrepiece for the Ramsgate War Memorial. This bronze statuette of this model was produced later in 1918.
