While on holiday, he saw a waterfall with water droplets sparkling in the sunshine. It inspired him to design a watch featuring diamonds freely moving between dial, bezel and sapphire crystal. Each diamond is set in a handmade white gold tube. The tube protrudes a few millimetres above the diamond's surface, so the smooth edges glide against the underside of the watch crystal without scratching. The slightest finger tap on the case causes the diamonds to move; this "tap test" remains the definitive test of authentic "Happy Diamonds". He began his career aged 14 as an apprentice goldsmith and diamond mounter, while also attending evening classes at the Sir John Cass Art School. By the age of 21, he was foreman of a fine jewellery workshop, and during the 1930s, King was often working, uncredited, for names such as Garrard, Rolex, Cartier and Asprey. During the War he was a planning engineer working on the production of the Hurricane, and after the War, he began to design and make watches with bought-in movements or as he put it, ‘jewellery that tells the time’, under his own name. When restrictions on the import of Swiss watch movements were lifted in 1960, he signed an exclusive agency agreement with the Swiss watch maison Bueche-Girod, leaving him free to design the exterior of the pieces as he wished. He also began to make watches with straps made wholly from gold, then a novel idea, and this example is typical of his work.He swept the board at the British Modern Jewellery Exhibition in 1961, winning two first prizes, one second prize and one third prize, with ‘bark finished’ pieces, a finishing technique giving the appearance of tree bark, pioneered by King, featuring prominently.During the 1960s, the workshop experimented with a wide variety of unconventional methods. Molten gold would be poured through tea strainers before being stretched into shapes to satisfy the most avant garde tastes. King’s 'bark finished' design for bracelets sparked a craze: when George Harrison married Patti Boyd in 1966, she wore one of King’s 'bark finished' wedding bands and 'bark finished' jewellery became the must-have accessory well into the 1970s.King opened a showroom in Mayfair in 1980 and continued personally to make one-off pieces for clients. He died aged 87 in 2000 and fine examples of his work continue to be sought after collector's pieces. Crystal - Complete. Some surface scratches, and minor grizzles to the edge at 3 & 4Dial - In good condition with no obvious sign of damage or deterioration.Movement - In working order but not tested for timekeeping or enduranceCase - In good condition. 1910 Triumph 3½hpRegistration no. SV 4316Frame no. 152324Engine no. 8564 4 2•Formerly owned by various well-known collectors•Brampton variable speed gear•Many-time Pioneer Run participant•An older restorationThe first Triumph motorcycle of 1902 used a Belgian Minerva engine, but within a few years the Coventry firm - originally a bicycle manufacturer founded by German immigrants Siegfried Bettman and Maurice Schulte - was building its own power units. The first of these - a 298cc single-cylinder sidevalve - arrived in 1904. This first design was not without its weaknesses: pistons and bores wore out quickly and the curious 'tandem down-tube' frame often broke, but these shortcomings were soon sorted and within a couple of years 'Triumph' was a byword for reliability. The famous 3½hp model first appeared in 1907. Originally of 453cc, its sidevalve engine was enlarged to 476cc in 1908 and finally to 499cc in 1910 before being superseded by the 4hp model in 1914. The company was involved in racing from its earliest days, and the publicity generated by competition successes - Jack Marshall won the 1908 Isle of Man TT's single-cylinder class for Triumph having finished second the previous year - greatly stimulated sales. By the outbreak of The Great War, the marque's reputation for quality and dependability was well-established, leading to substantial orders for 'Trusty Triumphs' for British and Allied forces. Previously registered 'LW 3193' and acquired by the vendor in 2021, this early 1910 model has clearly been restored at some point and is presented in very nice overall condition. Notable features include a 1911 Brampton variable speed gear and a Cowey 60mph speedometer. The Triumph was formerly the property of well known collector and rider, the late James Bridge-Butler, and took part in the 60th Pioneer Run. According to James Bridge-Butler's information sheet on file, the machine was requisitioned during the Great War by the Royal Flying Corps and had an RFC roundel on the tank (the tank appears either to have been repainted or the roundel removed. Images on file show the machine being ridden on the Pioneer Run with the roundel attached). The information sheet also states the Triumph has completed many Pioneer Runs. There are images of the machine on the 2005 Banbury Run and Pioneer Run, and other photographs taken when it was being ridden as a motorcycle combination. Also on file are letters to a Mr Pratt of Chelmsford dated 1979 referring to a letter he had published in the August issue of the VMCC Journal enquiring about the Brampton variable pulley. Additional documentation includes sundry invoices; Sunbeam MCC Pioneer Certificates; photocopied technical literature; expired MoTs; and old/current V5/V5C documents recording previous keepers as Reginald Connett and the well-known Oxfordshire collector, Alex Taylor. Recommissioning will be required before road use.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 21 April starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1966 MORRIS COOPER 1275 'S' Registration Number: PUB 536D Chassis Number: 1408 Recorded Mileage: TBA - First delivered to New Zealand - Matching engine and chassis - Subject to previous comprehensive restoration Designed by Alex Issigonis in 1959, a new concept in car design was born. With a monocoque shell, transversely mounted engine and front wheel drive, the new 'Mini', soon became popular across a broad spectrum of the population. The potential for competition use was soon seen by John Cooper; BMC were finally persuaded by John Cooper and the two worked together in culminating the birth of the Austin Mini Cooper and the Morris Mini Cooper in 1961. Victories in the 1964, 1965 and 1967 Monte-Carlo Rallies set the Mini on the road to fame but probably the greatest publicity was gained from their, somewhat unfair, disqualification for lighting irregularities in the 1966 event after coming in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. A more powerful Mini Cooper, dubbed the 'S', was developed in tandem and released in 1963. Approximately 2,500 Mk. II Cooper S were built making it one of the rarest versions of this very collectible motor car. First registered in 1966, this lovely Mini Cooper S was built under licence from BMC for the Australian market. As per standard production methods, the body and suspension were assembled in Australia, with a Cooper S 1275cc engine and gearbox shipped from the UK for completion. This Cooper S was specified with wind-up windows, twin fuel tanks, unique trim items and hydrolastic suspension.  Delivered new to New Zealand and first registered on 1st January 1966, we understand this early example covered around 100,000 miles over a 35 year period. By the turn of the millennium a restoration was due, and so in 2001 the Mini’s paint was stripped, repaired as required, repainted and reassembled. The engine and other mechanicals were stripped and rebuilt to factory specifications. According to the Australian Cooper S register, the engine and body numbers are matching. After completion the Cooper was on the move to join a collection in the U.S. where it remained for a number of years, prior to being sold to a Canadian gentleman who had a passion for British cars. The Mini was used sparingly in Canada, mainly for car meets in the summer months. On the move once more, the Mini was acquired by a local British enthusiast who imported the car into the UK, attended to a number of minor detail items, fitted a rev. counter and retrimmed the dash covering. Tuned on a rolling road not long ago, and supplied with a V5C registration document, history folder and jack, this well travelled Cooper S looks lovely and we are sure will prove to be hugely enjoyable to own and drive.

London Gazette 15 December 1942: ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East during the period November, 1941, to April, 1942.’ George Bestford was one of six sons born to Thomas Bestford, and was born in Gateshead, County Durham, in October 1897. He was educated at the local Higher Grade Secondary School, and at the age of 17 falsified his age to enlist in the 20th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (1st Tyneside Scottish) on 26 October 1914. Bestford advanced to Sergeant, and served with the Battalion in the French theatre of War from 9 January 1916. The Battalion served as part of the 102nd Infantry Brigade on the Somme, and Bestford was wounded in action on 1 July 1916. On the latter date the Battalion were fighting in tandem with the 4th Tyneside Scottish: ‘Owing to the artillery barrage and the intense machine gun fire and the distance (800 yds) of no man’s land to be traversed, the two battalions were almost wiped out, though the positions of the dead showed that they pushed on to the enemy’s second line of trenches before they were annihilated.’ (Battalion War Diary refers) On the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the 20th Battalion suffered casualties of 16 officers and 337 other ranks killed, and 10 officers and 268 other ranks wounded. Bestford was amongst the latter, and was evacuated back to the UK. His South African Police service files show that he subsequently received a G.O.C.’s Divisional Commendation in recognition of his gallantry on 1 July 1916. Whilst recuperating from his wounds, Bestford would have received news that his brother William had been killed in action whilst serving with the Royal Engineers on 21 July 1916. The following month, Bestford transferred as Acting Company Quartermaster Sergeant to the 29th (Reserve) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was subsequently posted to the 3rd Battalion, and then attached to the 84th Training Reserve Battalion at Hornsea. Major A. E. Ken recommended Bestford for a commission in March 1917: ‘This N.C.O. came very much under my observations, while at Home he attended several Courses of Instruction and on each one did very well indeed, on one occasion he came under the notice of the Brigadier who complimented him through his C.O. on his success... On Service he was even better, as a leader of men he is a success, I never knew him to shirk any danger or fatigues, and his coolness under Shell and Rifle fire is splendid. I regret to say his C.O. [Lieutenant Colonel C. Sillery] was killed as I knew that he had marked Sgt. Bestford out for distinction and no officers being left (All either killed or wounded) there was no one to put the recommendation forward. I think with a little training at a Cadet School he will make a very good Officer.’ After the requisite time with an Officer Cadet Battalion, Bestford was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers in October 1917. He tragically lost another sibling when his eldest brother, Robert, was killed in action serving with the Durham Light Infantry on 1 December 1917. He was then posted to France for service with the 25th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (2nd Tyneside Irish). After the War, he was attached as a Signalling Officer to the 2/4th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry for service in Syria and Egypt. Bestford advanced to Lieutenant in May 1919, and relinquished his commission in March of the following year. He sailed for Natal, South Africa, in April 1921, and joined the South African Police in June 1921, and advanced from Constable to Captain, District Officer and Station Officer by June 1940. He was appointed Captain, 1st South African Police Battalion, Union Defence Force later that month, and was appointed to the Staff Headquarters, 6th Infantry (Police) Brigade. He embarked with the 2nd South African Division, and arrived in Egypt in June 1941. Serving across North Africa, at the Battles of Sollum and Halfaya, he was promoted Major in February 1942. Bestford served as Brigade Major, 6th South African Infantry Brigade Headquarters, and under constant attack from Rommel’s Afrika Korps, the Allied Forces retreated from the Gazala Line throughout May and June 1942. The Garrison at Tobruk became isolated and the majority of the 2nd South African Division was captured there en masse as Prisoners of War on 21 June following General Orders to surrender. Unable to escape, Bestford was taken prisoner by the Italians and interned at Campo 75 (Bari). He was subsequently transferred to Germany, and interned in Stalag VII-A, Stalag V-C, and finally at Oflag XII-B at Hadamar. Repatriated in April 1945, he was recommended retrospectively for the D.S.O. Bestford afterward returned to South Africa, and there resumed his employment with the South African Police. He was appointed Commanding Officer, Police Training Depot, Pretoria. During the Royal Visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to South Africa in 1947, he had the honour of commanding the mounted escort and the Guard of Honour on special occasions throughout the tour. He was presented with his D.S.O. by the King at Voortrekkerhoogte, ...

1970 Porsche 911T Transmission: manualMileage:The original 911 series is often cited as the most successful competition car ever, especially when its variations are included; namely the powerful 911 derived 935 which won the 24 Hours Le Mans and other major sports car races outright against prototypes. The 911T was the first Porsche to receive the new Bosch K-Jetronic or CIS engine (Continuous Injection System) from January 1973 onwards. Often referred to as 1973 1/2, these T models produced 140bhp and also boasted the newer type standard H pattern (915) gearbox which, in tandem, provided a smooth yet powerful engine and proved great fun to drive. A contemporary Car and Driver extended road test concluded the base spec 911T was the better touring car, with the two fuel injected models being more difficult to handle in traffic and filled with mechanical noises. This stunning left hand drive, 1970 Porsche 911T coupé came off the production line in December 1969 and was first registered in Los Angeles, specified with an optional Blaupunkt stereo, leather steering wheel, and 911S oil tank and instruments. Owned for many years by a Mr Greg Craven in North Carolina, the 911 was imported to Europe in 2014 where it was the subject of a full body and mechanical restoration costing circa 50,000 euros, undertaken by Classic Car Services, under the watchful eye of Noel de Block, one of the leading classic car specialists in Belgium. The opportunity was taken to change the colour from burgundy, to the Porsche colour of ivory white. A full photographic record of the work that was undertaken can be seen on the Classic Car Services website (https://classic-car-service.be/porsche-911-t-karmann-coupe-1969/) and shows the high standard that it was completed to. Subsequently the Porsche was owned by Robert van Weelde, who amongst other things, played cricket for his home nation of the Netherlands! In the current vendors ownership, the 911 has been dry stored and resides in his private collection. The vendor reports that the original 2.2 litre engine offers plenty of power and the 911 drives very well indeed. In fantastic condition throughout the paintwork and interior are in very good order as is the engine bay, and underside. Maintained regardless of cost and following the extensive restoration this wonderful example is ready to enjoy. Offered with a history file including its current UK V5C registration document, previous MoT records, sundry bills, a photographic gallery of the restoration, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming that it retains its original engine. A desirable five speed manual example of the early Porsche 911, fabulously presented. Consignor Daniel Godin
