Notes: "This snuffbox, by the Swiss maker Charles Magnin (1830-1876), must have been a gift from Emperor D. Pedro II of Brazil to some prominent contemporary figure. This type of offering became particularly popular during the 19th century, when it was given as a token of esteem and as a reminder of family/friendship or in gratitude for services rendered. A snuff box by the same maker and with the same representation of Emperor D.
