A SCRIMSHAW DECORATED TOOTH having oval framed seascape 'The Astrolabe Ice Bound 1838', also with a figure 'The Right Whale' and head and shoulders portrait 'Captain Dumont d'Urville', 14.5cm long.* Dumont D'Urville was the expeditionary leader aboard the Atrolabe, re-named in honour of the original Astrolabe, which disappeared on an expedition in 1788. In 1826, d'Urville set out to find traces of the original voyage in the South Seas. His accounts of this voyage are well documented in his 23 volumes.
