Execution Broadside.- Senegal.-  very Last Dying Words, (The) of Governor Wall, Who was executed before the Debtors' Door at Newgate, London, on Thursday, January 28, 1802, for the Wilful Murder of Benjamin Armstrong, In the Island of Goree, in Africa, in the Year 1782, by causing him to be flogged to death by Black Slaves in the presence of himself and the rest of a Regiment, printed broadside, small marginal loss, scattered staining, obscuring odd letter, laid onto paper, ex-Nottingham library with neat ink-stamp to verso, c.375 x 170 mm., Burbage and Stretton, [1802]. *** Rare. Seemingly unrecorded.  Joseph Wall (1737-1802) was the notorious Colonial Governor of the island of Gorée, near Dakar, Senegal, between 1779 and 1782. Gorée had been a part of the Atlantic Slave trade until the 1770's when the trade declined. He was already known for his cruelty, however it was his reaction to a deputation from the African Corps, led by Sergeant Benjamin Armstrong, asking for settlement on their pay and back-pay, before Wall left the country, that led to his notoriety. Without calling for the necessary court-martial, an apparently drunken Wall charged the deputation with mutiny and insisted on them being flogged for 800 lashes each, with a "rope one inch in diameter" by black slaves. Three of the deputation, including Sergeant Ben Armstrong, died as a result. Due to difficulties providing witnesses, and Wall absconding arrest it was not until 1802 that he was finally tried and executed.

They lost all their provisions, and after 16 days of dehydration and starvation the Captain proposed "one should suffer for all, and that lot lots should be drawn between the four boys, as they had no families, and could not be considered so great a loss to their friends as those who had wives and children depending on them."

This observation, which has been often quoted in modern text-books, was made not on the human subject, but on a broken-winded mare. Floyer clearly distinguishes spasmodic asthma (from which he himself suffered), and assigns for it the same cause as do most modern authorities, viz. : 'contraction of the muscular fibres of the bronchia'. His other medical writings are less important" (DNB). Garrison & Morton 3166: "Floyer himself suffered from asthma for over 30 years. He recognised the influence of heredity in asthma. The above [work] includes (p.239) an important early account of emphysema."

He began an apprenticeship, at the age of fourteen, as a jeweler and watchmaker in Geneva. In the wake of the Revolutions of 1848 , he had emigrated to Britain taking up a position with the clockmakers Dwerrihouse & Co., London. He moved to Bath around 1856 where he established a successful business as a jeweler and watchmaker. He married Louisa, a girl from the Somerset Knotts family. There were four sons by this marriage and all eventually joined the family clockmaking business, which lasted as a retail business until 1925.An advertisement for the business in 1881 also referred to Horstmann as 'the inventor and patentee of...clocks wound by the year' of which the present lot is presumably an example. 'Gustav Horstmann invented many ingenious mechanisms, such as self-winding clocks, the first of which relied on the change between day and night temperature, but later ones on the expansion of liquids, metals and gases. He was a pioneer of thermostatic control, which he employed to operate flue dampers to obtain an even room temperature and even to open and close the windows of his house. Another of his inventions was a screw micrometer capable of measuring to one ten-thousands of an inch, which pre-dated Whitworth's more convenient micrometer of 1858 by two years.' After the death of Gustav, the sons eventually founded the Horstmann Gear Company which today is known as the Horstman Group 'comprising businesses units in the UK, US and Canada...providing... product development manufacture and defense project management in heavy armored and tracked vehicle suspension systems.'References:Stuart Burroughs. A good vintage signed 6.5 x 9 photograph of Eisenstein seated in a full-length pose, holding a baby in his arms, alongside actress Martha Lapkina, on the set of the drama film The General Line, directed by Eisenstein in 1929. Signed ('S. Eisenstein') in bold red fountain pen ink to the verso, with eleven lines of additional amusing, explanatory text in his hand, in French, '"En Famille" Marthe Lapkina et moi 5 minutes avant de finir le "shooting" de la "Ligne Generale" (le bebe sur mes genoux est parvenu au monde sans aucune cooperation de ma part! - notre bebe a nous c'est la "Ligne")' (Translation: ' "With my family" Martha Lapkina and I 5 minutes before we finished shooting the "Ligne Generale" (the baby on my lap came into the world without any cooperation from me! - our baby is the "Line")' ). With the publication stamp of Vu magazine to the verso and a few ink and pencil annotations in an unidentified hand, largely notes and directions for the publication of the photograph. Rare. A few corner and surface creases, otherwise VGThe baby seen in the photograph was in fact M. Ivanin who appeared in the film as Martha's on-screen son.

LENIN VLADIMIR: (1870-1924) Russian revolutionary and politician who served as the first and founding head of government of Soviet Russia 1917-24 and of the Soviet Union 1922-24 & TSIURUPA ALEXANDER (1870-1928) Bolshevik leader and Soviet politician who served as People's Commissar for Food of the RSFSR 1918-21. A rare D.S. by both Lenin ('V Ulyanov (Lenin)') and Tsiurupa ('A Tsyurupa') individually, one page, folio, Kremlin, Moscow, 20th June 1919, with the stamped heading of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic Workers and Peasants Defence Council, in Cyrillic. The typed document is addressed to Narkomprod (People's Commissariat for Food Supplies) of Crimea and states, in part, 'Considering the severity of the food situation in Russia, and the enormous shortages of food for children, especially for sick children, I suggest that all canned fruits available in Crimea, as well as cheese, should be earmarked solely for feeding sick children in Northern Russia. Products should be sent to Komprod's address'. Signed at the conclusion by Lenin in his capacity as Chairman of the Defence Council and by Tsiurupa in his capacity as People's Commissar for Food Supplies, alongside an official circular purple ink stamp. Some very light, extremely minimal age wear, VGThe People's Commissariat for Food Supplies (also known by it's abbreviation Narkomprod) was originally founded in 1917 and was the ministry of the Russian SFSR in charge of food supplies and industrial goods.Lenin and Tsiurupa signed the present document at a significant time during the Russian Civil War (1917-23) throughout which Crimea changed hands numerous times. Whilst it was governed by the Bolsheviks in June 1919, it would not be long before it became the stronghold of the anti-Bolshevik White Army under the command of General Anton Denikin. It is therefore possible that Lenin and Tsiurupa, aware of the situation facing Crimea, were attempting to get as much food as they could out of the area before it was too late.
