Soon after the family moved to various residences in rural England eventually buying Warren House, Bodfari, Flintshire (Hywel). Following his exploits as a pioneering aviator and racing driver his flying experience was put to good use. During the First World War he represented the British Government as an Admiralty Test Pilot at the Curtiss Aviation Company, Buffalo, U.S.A. An accident in January 1918 precluded further aviation activities and soon after he involved himself in the field of ornithology and oology. Quite early on he took up residence in Rhyl, at Holmfield, 21 West Kimmel Street where Mrs E.M. Parry (first names unknown to me) became his housekeeper, the start of a relationship which lasted for the rest of his life. By about 1928 the months of April to September- the bird breeding season-were devoted to bird watching visiting many of the Welsh islands such as Puffin, The Skerries, Bardsey, and Grassholm in one of his boats. He rented Puffin Island and studied the seabirds. Published a paper in The Oologists’ Record of 1st June 1929 about his observations on this island. His wealth came from the family Brewing interests in Grimsby of which he had no interest whatsoever. There was a Hewitt Trust which was set up by his grandfather. The terms of the trust were that only a male could inherit. When the brewery and other property was sold about 1933 Vivian Hewitt being the sole heir was the recipient of a vast fortune in the order of one and a quarter million pounds, so his already large income was swelled to the tune of some £50,000 a year from that source (Hywel). With his wealth Vivian could buy virtually anything which took his fancy. He became a very valued customer of Spink and Son of London who sold him rare stamps, gold coins and valuable objects d’art. They were to become an important conduit for the sale of Great Auk eggs and specimens. In the early 1960’s he became a tax exile and lived for much of the year at his house Mount Vernon, Nassau, Bahamas with Mrs Parry and appears to have abandoned his vast collection of eggs, some say half a million others a million, at his Anglesey property of Bryn Aber, Cemlyn under the control of Jack Parry. It was not until he was nearly seventy when he chose Nassau as his permanent home. Many of his personal and most prized possessions had been shipped out, and he continued to occupy many hours of the day dealing with his stamp and coin collections and even adding to them. Naturally, some of his engineering acquisitions proved too troublesome for transit and his collection of birds’ skins and eggs were too vast to move. However, the mounted specimens of Great Auks, as well as the eggs were too precious not to be under his surveillance and were constantly admired and studied. Hewitt died in a friend’s house at Cemlyn, Anglesey on the 18thJuly 1965. He had been in failing health in Nassau for some considerable time having been diagnosed with a carcinoma of the oesophagus and returned to Wales for treatment in Liverpool a short time before he died. Registration - VJM 415YChassis No. - WBAAH3208C7277550M.O.T. - ExemptOdometer - 116,243This characterful BMW 323i is described as a bona fide barn find, that’s been off the road for the past 20 years (an original tax disc is dated November 2004). The vendor says it is resplendent in all-original condition, from the metallic red paintwork, to the cream interior, which is in surprisingly good order, given the fact this is a 41-year-old car. This is backed up by “stacks of history,” confirms the vendor, including plenty of receipts and the original book pack that features a service history book with plenty of stamps. It even features the pre-delivery inspection stamp, dated April 1983.‘VJM415Y’ is believed to be one of the final E21s built, before BMW switched to the E30 3 Series. Its rarity is further underlined by the factory-fit air conditioning system; if E21s were fitted with air con at all, it was usually a dealer-fit system. The odometer of this 323i reads just over 116,000 miles and an HPI check reports there are no mileage discrepancies. It hasn’t been written off, stolen or scrapped, either. E21 BMW 3 Series in such original condition are real rarities these days, and this will be a worthwhile restoration project for a marque enthusiast. The BMW 3 Series has been in continuous production since it replaced the 02 series in 1975 – and the E21 was the original generation. A real case of right first time, it introduced the world to the concept of the sporty compact saloon, a driver-focused chassis and powerful engines combined with the very highest standards of engineering. Perfect styling under the director of Paul Bracq added to the appeal – and earned the E21 BMW 3 Series a place in Design Museum London’s “fifty cars that changed the world”. The E30 BMW 3 Series followed the E21 in 1983, and BMW really hasn’t looked back since; even today, a new 3 Series remains one of the finest cars in the world. In summary:Highly original E21 BMW 3 SeriesFeatures ultra-rare factory-fit air conditioningExtensive history records include a service history with 14 years of stamps

Lot 40

Registration - R791 PHGChassis No. - SCBLB51E2XCH01507M.O.T. - 12 MonthsOdometer - 71,240This striking silver Bentley Arnage has a tasteful special-order two-tone interior that blends Portland hide with English Tan leather sections, set off by hand-crafted wood veneer. Built in Crewe, this Series 1 Arnage was first registered in June 1998, supplied to Ron Stratton & Co Rolls-Royce and Bentley of Knutsford, Cheshire. It is a rare BMW-engined model, with the 4.4-litre turbo V8, which produces 350bhp for 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds. The vendor describes it as being in good condition throughout, and this UK-registered car will come with 12 months’ MOT. The odometer reads 71,240 miles but the vendor says it had a documented speedometer change in 2004. The total mileage is around 144,750 miles. It was first owned by Stockport’s Fredrick Dairies and, registered as ‘1 CES’, was chauffeur driven until the company sold it in 2010. Now a three-owner car, ‘R791PHG’ had nearly £2,700 spent on it in 2016, including two new rear gas suspension spheres, electrical work and gear selector mechanism rectification. It also comes with the original book pack, which includes a service book containing 14 main dealer stamps and a further classic and specialist stamp, plus a large selection of past invoices and MOTs, and even the full specification sheet of this well-equipped car. The Bentley Arnage was launched, along with its sister car, the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph, in 1998. They were the first all-new models from the company since 1980. While the Rolls-Royce used a BMW V12 engine, the Bentley used a turbo V8. However, during its launch period, a takeover battle saw Volkswagen Group acquire Bentley and BMW acquire Rolls-Royce. As part of this, Volkswagen modified the Bentley to use an updated version of the original 6.75-litre pushrod turbo V8 – meaning that just 439 right-hand drive BMW-powered Bentley Arnage were built before it was phased out. It makes this car a real collectible that marks a fascinating period in the company’s history. In summary:Silver Pearl paintwork combined with special order interiorRare BMW-powered carExtensive service history includes 14 main dealer stamps

* Textile Designs. Five large designs for silk fabric, France: Lyon, circa 1760s/70s, gouache on laid point paper, each depicting a different floral pattern, 3 including a lace ribbon design, and 1 additionally incorporating a stone urn, 2 printed '[Pierre] Huilliot a Lion' and 1 printed 'Veret place de la comedie a Lion' to lower blank margin, versos with contemporary manuscript instructions in French to the weavers pertaining to colours, size of pattern repeat, etc., and all but one with purple ink stamp 'Robert Ruepp 7 Rue Bergére Paris', a little dusty, some chipping and fraying to edges (and associated paper strengthening on verso), one with two 6 x 6 cm sections excised from top edge (with slight loss of pattern), another with 1.5 x 3 cm hole patched on verso (not touching design), sheet size 44 x 55 cm (17.25 x 21.5 ins) and slightly smaller, each mounted, together with another mounted fabric design unrelated QTY: (6)NOTE:A small collection of rare 18th century preparatory technical drawings, each for a different patterned silk; these acted as instructions to the weaver about how to tie up the threads on the loom before weaving in the pattern. Lyon was the most prestigious centre of the silk industry in Europe from the 1660s onwards; patterns of around a century later such as these typically feature large floral motifs and sinous ribbons or stems which unify the design, and they often incorporated metal threads. The V&A holds a number of similar Lyonnaise textile designs.Robert Ruepp (1854-after 1935) was an early 20th century designer who would have used earlier patterns as inspiration for his own designs. Ruepp first established his business in Paris in the early 1880s, and eventually had one of the largest Belle Époque industrial design studios, producing patterns for textiles and wallpapers which he supplied to manufacturers in France and abroad. Although he supplied all manner of designs, Ruepp was particularly known for his adoption of the Art Nouveau style. At the Exposition Universelle of 1900 a whole salon was devoted to the presentation of Ruepp's designs, an installation which drew much attention from the press and earned him a gold medal.

Execution Broadside.- Senegal.-  very Last Dying Words, (The) of Governor Wall, Who was executed before the Debtors' Door at Newgate, London, on Thursday, January 28, 1802, for the Wilful Murder of Benjamin Armstrong, In the Island of Goree, in Africa, in the Year 1782, by causing him to be flogged to death by Black Slaves in the presence of himself and the rest of a Regiment, printed broadside, small marginal loss, scattered staining, obscuring odd letter, laid onto paper, ex-Nottingham library with neat ink-stamp to verso, c.375 x 170 mm., Burbage and Stretton, [1802]. *** Rare. Seemingly unrecorded.  Joseph Wall (1737-1802) was the notorious Colonial Governor of the island of Gorée, near Dakar, Senegal, between 1779 and 1782. Gorée had been a part of the Atlantic Slave trade until the 1770's when the trade declined. He was already known for his cruelty, however it was his reaction to a deputation from the African Corps, led by Sergeant Benjamin Armstrong, asking for settlement on their pay and back-pay, before Wall left the country, that led to his notoriety. Without calling for the necessary court-martial, an apparently drunken Wall charged the deputation with mutiny and insisted on them being flogged for 800 lashes each, with a "rope one inch in diameter" by black slaves. Three of the deputation, including Sergeant Ben Armstrong, died as a result. Due to difficulties providing witnesses, and Wall absconding arrest it was not until 1802 that he was finally tried and executed.

"The vessel, it appeared, either steering wild through carelessness of the helmsman, or perhaps from her bad trim, suddenly broached to, and lay like a log in the trough of the sea." They lost all their provisions, and after 16 days of dehydration and starvation the Captain proposed "one should suffer for all, and that lot lots should be drawn between the four boys, as they had no families, and could not be considered so great a loss to their friends as those who had wives and children depending on them."

"The work on asthma is ... very noteworthy, not only as containing excellent clinical observations, but as giving the first account, derived from dissection, of the change in the lungs now called emphysema, which is found in one of the forms of asthma as then understood. This observation, which has been often quoted in modern text-books, was made not on the human subject, but on a broken-winded mare. Floyer clearly distinguishes spasmodic asthma (from which he himself suffered), and assigns for it the same cause as do most modern authorities, viz. : 'contraction of the muscular fibres of the bronchia'. His other medical writings are less important" (DNB). Garrison & Morton 3166: "Floyer himself suffered from asthma for over 30 years. He recognised the influence of heredity in asthma. The above [work] includes (p.239) an important early account of emphysema."
