Bestandskatalog Sammlung Hermann Gerlinger, Halle (Saale) 2005, S. 84, SHG-Nr. 176 (m. Abb.). Schmidt-Rottluff's 'Russian Landscapes' were probably created in Berlin after memories of the Russian landscape, which the artist had become acquainted with during the First World War. However, there are no references to war and destruction in them; instead, they depict an almost idealized rural idyll. In the 'Russian Landscapes', memories and current impressions of nature merge, as the artist absorbed them in the summer months of 1919 in, among other places, Hohwacht on the Bay of Lübeck. After the First World War, Schmidt-Rottluff's work is characterized by a spirit of optimism. [JS] Called up: June 8, 2024 - ca. 17.26 h +/- 20 min. This lot can be purchased subject to differential or regular taxation, artist´s resale right compensation is due.

Seemingly unrecorded. At the time this phenomena was seen across much of the country, and was believed to be meteor showers. Subsequent scientific researchers believe this to have been one of the most impressive aurora borealis ever seen in Britain.  "About Twelve, a bright Globular Body appeared, as big as, and like the Sun at his Rising, but not quite so clear. Indeed it was the most astonishing sight I ever yet beheld. During this time, the Light was such that I my self (tho' now almost sixty Years of Age) and another Clergyman did read several Titles of the Books in the Bible, without any Use of Art."

Seemingly unrecorded.  An unusually in-depth record of transportation and convict life in Australia, including details of those held in Macquarie Harbour; Norfolk Island; Phillip's Island as well as a particularly gruesome account of cannibalism. Conditions for the convicts were so bad that the only escape for many would be to murder at random, ensuring they were seen, entirely in order to be convicted and executed.  "A great number of these horrid men committed murder in order to be hanged indeed, the thing was quite common. They used to gamble for life; they would conclude to kill some person, to be hanged."

Montanus & U. Neuber, 1551.*** Rare and important work with a most distinguished provenance, in excellent condition and in its strictly contemporary binding. The Honeyman copy of the first edition of the collected works by Johann Schöner, mathematician, astronomer, cartographer, and scientific instrument maker from Karlstadt, in Bavaria.Schöner was a contemporary of Nicolaus Copernicus and in 1526 he became the first professor of mathematics at the University of Nuremberg. His most illustrious pupil was Georg Joachim Rheticus, who in the Narratio prima (1540) announced Copernicus' discoveries. Schöner was also active as a printer and even set up a press in his house, printing numerous previously unpublished works by Johannes Regiomontanus, as well as the first printed terrestrial globe to name the recently discovered continent of America. The Opera mathematica was published posthumously by his son Andreas and is introduced by a preface by the outstanding humanist and reformer Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560). The volume contains a representative sample of Schöner's wide and diverse interests, and a digest of some of his separately published works, most of which are extremely rare. Part 3 contains the most important section, which describes and illustrates eleven instruments, under the title Aequatorium Astronomicum, ex quo errantium stellarum motus, luminarium configurationes, & defectus colliguntur, a revised and enlarged version of the work which first appeared in 1521. The Aequatorium Astronomicum contains the earliest collection of printed equatoria-diagrams, as well as a catalogue of stars adapted by Schöner from that published by Copernicus in his De revolutionibus of 1543.The text is illustrated by an elaborate series of volvelles (movable wheel charts) used to determine planetary positions. Each part of these volvelles was printed on a separate page, such that the reader could cut them out or trace them on separate pieces of paper, and then assemble the various parts with string. These fragile 'paper instruments', which Schöner was among the first to employ, are frequently lacking or only partially present in most other copies of this work, and they are very often constructed incorrectly.Provenance: from the library of the Latin school in Altenburg, Germany (stamp on the binding 'Biblioth. Schol. Altenburgensis'); the English politician and book collector Sir Robert Leicester Harmsworth (1870-1937; his sale at Sotheby's London, 9 February 1953, lot 9605); Robert Honeyman IV (1897- 1987; see The Honeyman Collection of Scientific Books and Manuscripts. A SET OF SIX WEST COUNTRY QUEEN ANNE SILVER SPOONS, JOHN MURCH I OF PLYMOUTH, EXETER, 1707 Dog Nose pattern with plain rat-tail heels, later gilded, fully Britannia standard hallmarked, in a Victorian leather fitted case with gilt initials H.J.T. for Herbert James Torr, interior with gilt stamp for Elkington & Co., Liverpool, spoons 20cm long, 348gProvenance: Herbert James Torr JP (1864-1935), son of John Torr, MP for Liverpool from 1872 until his death in 1880; thence by family descent to the vendor. It is rare to find a set of six English Provincial spoons at this date, especially so with full marks. Apparently, following the introduction of the higher Britannia standard in 1696, Murch made his own Britannia marks, to suggest compliance, but was fined by the London Goldsmith's Company in 1699 for selling substandard wares. Working in Plymouth at the time these spoons were produced, one presumes John Murch submitted them for assay at Exeter at the correct standard. For further information on the silversmith see Miles Harrison, 'Exeter & West Country Silver 1700-1900', published by Berforts Group, 2014, p.164.The well-known firm of manufacturing silversmiths, Elkington & Co., as well as retailing their own wares, also on occasion dealt in antique silver. Given that they first opened retail premises in Liverpool in 1869 (Culme, Vol.I, p.141) it is likely this set of spoons were 're-conditioned' and gilded by Elkington prior to retail there sometime in the 1870s to either Herbert or John Torr.

Österreich - - Leopold Munsch. (1826 Wien - 1888 Pressburg). Oil on panel. Signed. Framed in a gold-coloured frame with acanthus decoration. On the verso with the trace of an unidentified old stamp. - Faint colour abrasion along the edges as a trace of the framing. On the verso the wood with minor scratches and traces of use. Very good overall. Summery view of a town house in bright, lively colours. - Leopold Munsch devoted himself to art full-time from around 1840 when he was already an adult. Artistically, Munsch was influenced by his Viennese colleagues who focussed on landscape painting: Anton Hansch, Joseph Holzer and Remigius Adrianus Haanen. Munsch exhibited regularly from 1849 onwards. Stylistically, his works can be described as naturalistic views which he skilfully enhanced with accents of light to create atmospheric scenes. In terms of motifs, he focussed primarily on the mountain landscapes of South Tyrol and the Salzkammergut, making our painting of a city villa a rare motif.
