Chandler (Raymond) Playback, dedication proof copy belonging to Chandler's agent/lover Helga Greene, Helga Greene Literary Agency stamp on half-title, annotations presumably in Helga's hand for printer directions and the odd correction, spine rubbed and splitting along joints, 1958; and a proof of Raymond Chandler Speaking, also with the agency stamp on title and signed by one of the editors, 1962, proof copies, original wrappers, covers spotted and discoloured, 8vo (2) *** A rare proof/dedication/agent's copy of Chandler's last novel. After Chandler's wife Cissy died in 1954, Chandler took to alcohol and fell into a deep depression. His personal life was both helped and complicated after a few years when he and his literary agent Helga Greene became lovers, and rumours suggested at least attraction to other women in his life, namely Sonia Orwell (George Orwell's widow), and Natasha Spender (Stephen Spender's wife) and his secretary Jean Fracasse. The printed dedication is to both Helga and Jean - a parting gift before he died in March the following year, foreshadowing the fallout between the two women over his estate. Greene inherited his $60,000 estate, after prevailing in the 1960 lawsuit filed by Jean who contested Chandler's holographic codicil to his will, written four weeks before he died. Following Greene's success in the courts, Helga hired Kathrine Sorley Walker and Dorothy Gardiner to compile Chandler's letters, essays and unfinished novel into a book, Raymond Chandler Speaking. Walker worked for Greene's literary agency for 25 years, until Greene's death. A World War II Royal Observer Corps Sector or Colour Change Clock, by Elliot England, Serial No. 11576, date stamp 1939 to rear of movement, fusee movement all apparently correct, hardwood bezel and back box, back box stamped B26, stencil to left side door A1DESG, back box securing pegs present, painted dial in sector colours, 19ins diameter including bezel, with original pendulum and keyhttps://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/qa24dar9toifb73idwr2i/ABpqWV9p13uxlB1Ngg3cJJc?rlkey=gl3ardr5qr6s9rxrje8wiq8cn&st=mth5in3s&dl=0 The clock presents in excellent overall condition showing slight wear commensurate with age and usage. The dial appears to be in good condition showing no obvious sign of any restoration, likewise the glass and frame are bearing the original black paint and present in good condition. The hinge functions correctly with no sign of wear and the screws appear original. The outer wooden bezel shows no undue sign of previous damage or repair and shows the odd mark, again commensurate with age and usage and it appears to have had a coat of varnish but this is historic rather than recent. To the rear of the clock the woodwork presents again in honest original condition, the screws appear to be original, the hinges to the flaps at the side at the bottom appear original and in good order. Both flaps function correctly. The brass hanging tag is not original but is a replacement and has two new screw attached to it. The four wooden pegs that hold the cabinet appear to be in good condition and original. The cabinet itself again has original screws, no sign of any obvious previous repair or damage but may again historically have received a coat of varnish. The movement is honest and complete, does not appear to have any replacement parts, it winds and runs and sets but should be regarded as untested. We cannot warrant the originality of all parts but there is nothing glaringly obvious. Pendulum is present and is original. The key is non original but fits and functions correctly. Prospective bidders are advised to study all images closely prior to bidding. Overall a good honest example of a increasingly rare item.

Gottfried Benn Zweiundzwanzig Gedichte (1936-1943). [Privatdruck] August 1943. - Seit 2014 in hessischem Privatbesitz. LITERATUR: Lohner/Zenner 1.90. - Raabe 24, 24. - Dedication copy to his friend F. W. Oelze. Only edition, extremely rare. The magazine was printed in a very small edition and only passed on to closest friends. Illegal publication that Benn had printed towards the end of the war despite the ban on writing. Orig.-wrappers. - Rear joint (adhesive binding) loosened. Spine slightly faded and rubbed.
