I am now taking the opportunity of sending you a few lines about how we started from Southhampton [sic]...We have been having very rough weather but the ship is so steady you would hardly know it was moving, was it not for the throbbing of the engines. We are now nearing Queenstown. The ship is like a magnificent palace. The lounge & dining hall are very beautiful. We are having excellent food. I have made friends with a young English gentleman and he is very nice indeed. The beds are very nice also with plenty of covering to keep warm also they have spring mattresses...Excuse writing as the ship is rolling a good bit. Now I must close. With love to all. One of thirteen children, Thomas Cupper Mudd was born in Suffolk to Thomas and Elizabeth Coe Mudd of Huntingfield. Two of Thomas' older brothers had already emigrated to America by 1912. His brother James was the first to leave, sometime in 1907, settling in Radnor, Pennsylvania where he worked as a gardener, his brother George following in 1911. Thomas, working as a bookkeeper, booked a second-class ticket aboard the maiden voyage of the Titanic for £10, 10s (ticket number S.O./P.P. 3), which set sail on 10th April 1912. He wrote this letter to his mother while onboard a day later from Queenstown, Ireland, the last port of call before the ship's fateful collision in the final hour of 14th April. Thomas Mudd perished in the sinking, and his body, if recovered, was never identified. At only 16, he was one of the youngest victims of the Titanic disaster.

RADIGUET RAYMOND: (1903-1923) French novelist and poet. An extremely rare Autograph Manuscript Signed, Raymond Radiguet, one page, 8vo (originally two oblong 8vo sheets of paper, neatly pasted together at the centre), n.p., n.d. (1919), in French. The manuscript, with a number of corrections and deletions, is entitled Allusions and is an article of appreciation for the artist Juan Gris, stating, in part, ´Juan Gris peint comme tous les peintres, c´est a dire sur de la toile ou du carton ou du bois. On repete: PRISON. Did I say that he was no different from the others? There's always a certain amount of professional secrecy, and many people would like to know. Personally, I don't think that the emotion felt in front of a painting is due to the quality of the brushes or the colours. All that matters is the result. There's a road that leads there, and it's called aesthetics.....The horizon is a conventional line.....So there's nothing to fear, thieves won't know where to hide. Someone says a word. It is repeated: PRISON. Only one had heard the PINSON, which sings day and night. Similarly, everyone says they have an opinion on the painting. But not everyone is right. Juan Gris saw beauty every day of the week, including Sunday. The smallest of his still lifes is not a ‘study’. There is a pipe being smoked in the evening. The last hour. Plus, a guitar; no, it's a violin. Like any classical painter, Gris is concerned with proportions. I am talking about the true proportions that are in the mind and not what the vulgar call them. There are no cocktails. When I ask for a drink, the sky or the siphon is always the same colour´). Autograph manuscripts of Radiguet are extremely rare as a result of his tragically early death at the age of 20 of typhoid fever. With a small red circular stamp at the base featuring the letters PAB to the centre. Some light age wear and an irregularly torn lower edge, not affecting the text or signature, GJuan Gris (1887-1927) Spanish Cubist painter, a friend of Radiguet. The present article was published in the March/April edition of the magazine Sic, founded and published by Pierre Albert-Birot (1876-1967) French avant-garde poet and dramatist who was a defender of Futurism and Cubism.

Lot 984

MIRO JOAN: (1893-1983) Spanish painter. A fine and extremely rare signed pochoir in colours on wove paper, with lithographic inscription at the base, approximately 24.5 x 32 cm, being one of just sixty Hors Commerce examples of Miro´s famous stencil print entitled Aidez l´Espagne (1937; ´Help Spain´), the brightly coloured design (incorporating the strong red and yellow colours of the Spanish and Catalan flags) depicting a Catalan peasant farmer wearing a barretina and with his right fist raised in a loyalist salute, framed above and below by the two words that form the motto, an exhortation to the citizens of neighbouring countries to support the government of the Spanish Republic, then immersed in the Civil War. The French printed text to the lower border states ´Dans la lutte actuelle, je vois du cote fasciste des forces depassees, et de l´autre cote des gens, avec d´immenses ressources creatives qui donneront a l´Espagne un elan qui etourdira le monde´ (Translation: ´In this present battle I see on the fascist side just the outdated forces, and on the other side, the people whose immense creative resources which will give Spain a power which will astonish the whole world´). Marked H.C. and signed (´Miro´) by the artist in pencil at the base. VGAidez l´Espagne was created by Miro in 1937 at the request of the art critic, collector, writer and publisher Christian Zervos with the idea that it could be issued as a one franc postage stamp to raise funds to finance the government of the Spanish Republic. Although Miro was not a deeply political artist, the project was carried out as part of the preparation and setup of the Spanish Republic pavilion for the 1937 Paris International Exposition, for which Miro also contributed his mural The Reaper (also known as The Catalan Peasant in Revolt). Miro´s striking graphic work was never issued as a postage stamp, but instead was published in two editions, of which the present signed Hors Commerce (´out of trade´) example is by far the rarer of the two. The other, unsigned edition, was published in numbers 4-5 of the Cahiers d´Art magazine, also in 1937, and is documented in the Catalogue Raisonné: Miró Recorder (1928-1960) by Jacques Dupin (p.40, No.17).

The Westminster Abbey Chapel Stall Plate of Vice-Admiral Sir George Murray, K.C.B., Royal Navy Westminster Abbey Chapel Stall Plate of the Order of the Bath, inscribed ‘Sir George Murray, Vice Admiral of the Red Squadron of His Majesty’s Fleet, nominated a Knight Commander of the Most Honorable Military Order of the Bath, 2nd Jany. 1815’, 22.5cm x 18.5cm, gilded copper plate engraved with inscription and painted crest of Murray, the reverse with maker’s stamp ‘G. Harris, No 31 Shoe Lane, London’, excellent condition and rare £2,000-£3,000 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- Sir George Murray (1759-1819) had a distinguished Naval career which began when he was eleven years old. He was present at the bloody attack on Sullivan's Island and the reduction of Rhode Island in 1776. Under Sir John Jervis he took part in the battle of St. Vincent in 1797, and his was one of the ships chosen by Nelson for the attack on Copenhagen in 1801. In 1807 he was appointed commander-in-chief of the naval operations against Buenos Ayres. He was promoted to Vice Admiral in October 1809 and died suddenly at Chichester on 28 February 1819, in his sixtieth year. When the Order of the Bath was enlarged into a Military Division of three classes in 1815, it was intended that all Knights would have their own stall in the chapel at Westminster Abbey with their own personal stall plate affixed. These plates were an official part of the insignia of the Order and, until the early 1820’s, were made up for many (but not all) of the new Knights. Lack of space, however, and the unexpected number of new Knights, precluded the plates being put up in the Abbey. In the late 1970’s all surviving plates were disposed of by the Abbey and many were sold off to interior designers and antique dealers as decorative items, in total approximately 100 K.C.B. plates and 300 C.B. plates, in addition to a small number of K.B. and G.C.B. plates.

Registration – NET 42MChassis No. – BFATNB00402M.O.T. – ExemptOdometer – NAAn incredibly rare barn-find example, this classic Ford Escort MkI Mexico is offered at no reserve, and will garner plenty of interest, for those wanting to put their own stamp on a restoration project. Now presented in red, ‘NET 42M’ was originally registered as Blue recorded colour change. As for the Escort’s interior, little is known of its colour scheme or trim, as it is no longer fitted, except for wooden panels across the dashboard and instrument surround. Under the bonnet is a ‘1600 GT’ unit, prepared by Paul Gardner Racing Services according to the labelling - specialists in rally car preparation and engines. It must be noted that ‘NET 42M’ is described by the vendor however as a rolling shell.Despite some of the Escort’s features having been removed and either stored in the cabin, or lost for good, the fact that it is a Mk1 Mexico is recognised by the car’s logbook. Having been stored for a number of years, the last recorded DVLA mileage is 42,000 miles in 1993, with the odometer currently displaying a little over 44,700 miles and in the same ownership for 22years. Though it must be stressed that this is offered as a rolling shell in need of restoration, and currently in ‘barn find’ condition.· Offered at no reserve· Change to bid for a true barn find Escort Mk1 Mexico· In need of comprehensive restorationFord replaced its popular but aging Anglia in 1967 with the Escort, but it didn’t suffer from following in the footsteps of such a successful car. If anything, it quickly made the market its own. The first passenger car to be developed by Ford of Europe – merging the British, Irish, and German divisions of the US car giant – the premise was simple; create a stylish, practical family car. Based on a front-engine, rear-wheel drive platform, the Escort MkI went on to sell more than two million units in just six years. Available as either two- or four-door saloon, three-door estate, or van, the Escort was also raced successfully, taking rally and touring car titles, thanks in part to Ford’s continued work with Lotus. The now famous Mexico models came about to mark the Escort’s success in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, won by Hannu Mikkola and Gunnar Palm in an Excort.

1300-1000 B.C. Cylinder with fractured upper end; accompanied by a copy of an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: ' Cylinder Seal of Black Stone, 41.5 x 19.5 mm. This seal is cone-shaped -- narrower at the top than the bottom -- and is engraved both around the sides and on the bottom. The top is broken off, and this would have contained a hole for carrying on a string. Around the sides a row of four walking men is depicted. They are shown in schematized shape, especially the heads which are round blobs with a point at one side for the nose. Three hold rods in their raised hand, the fourth gripsa branch with the aid of the figure walking in front of him. All four have three horizontal cuts across their bodies from waist to thighs, and in three cases something flows out behind ending in a curve at the end, perhaps intended as part of their dress, a ribbon for example. This frieze is contained within lines above and below. On the base appears a standing quadruped with a small head and long curving tail. This is an extremely rare type of cylinder-stamp seal, Levantine in origin, and dating from c. 1300-1000 B.C. It is larger than most cylinder seals. The closest parallel is in the collection of the Dukes of Northumberland, now in the Museum of Oriental Art, University of Durham, published in Iraq 41 (1979) p.33f. and pl.xii, no.110.'; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. 26.58 grams, 42 mm (1 5/8 in.). [No Reserve] UK private collection, acquired 1980-1983. Accompanied by a copy of a scholarly note, typed and signed by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert in August 1991.

Lot 227

900-700 B.C. Cylinder with attached cord and bead handle; accompanied by a copy of an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: ' Cylinder-Stamp Seal of Bronze, 330x08.5 mm. The seal is surmounted by a suspension loop, beneath which is a double-faced demon head with large, animal-like ears and beards. The neck is decorated with horizontal lines at the fronts and vertical lines at the sides. This rests immediately on the seal proper. The design of the cylinder seal is put between double lines above and beneath. It shows a standing worshipper with raised hands before an incense burner, a group of seven dots, a lunar cresent [sic], a lozenge-shape and a slender tree. The base, the stamp seal, shows a winged solar disc. Such seals, which are quite rare, come from the mountainous area to the north of Mesopotamia, and date from c. 900-700 B.C. In this case the worshipper and the winged disc are borrowed from Assyrian art, but the combination of items before the worshipper is not Assyrian. The demon-head cannot be identified with certainty, though it may be a variety of the Mesopotamian Pazuzu.'; accompanied by museum-quality impressions. 7.82 grams total, 8.1-32.64 mm (1 1/4 in.). [No Reserve] UK private collection, acquired 1980-1983. Accompanied by a copy of a scholarly note, typed and signed by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert in September 1990.

5th-4th century B.C. Discoid in plan with convex upper face; accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Stamp Seal of Amber Chalcedony 21 x 19 x 11 mm. This is a scaraboid pieced vertically. The design shows a standing worshipper in long robe raising one hand to a stand on which is a prancing bull on the back of which rises a pole surmounted with a lunar crescent. The stand is covered with wavey lines. This is a Late Babylonian seal, c. 600-350 B.C. from Mesopotamia or an adjacent area. The general design is typical for the period, but the stand with wavey lines and the prancing bull are rare and may be unique to this seal. The seal is worn and there is a chip by the head of the worshipper, but the design is entirely clear'; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. 6.33 grams, 20.92 mm (3/4 in.). with Christie's, London, 13 June 2000, no.517 [Part]. Accompanied by a copy of a scholarly note, typed and signed by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert in July 2000. Accompanied by copies of the relevant Christie's catalogue pages.

Just two owners from new and under 7,000 milesExtremely rare Atlas Grey MetallicRare configuration of bucket seats with no roll cage, ideal for touringMain dealer service history & freshly serviced by Porsche BrooklandsFollowing the launch of the 911/996, Porsche launched the GT3, the first 996 variant intended for the racetrack. Its 3.6 litre engine was derived from the GT1 and delivered 360bhp at 7,200rpm, offering 60 additional horsepower over the base 3.4 litre motor in the standard Carrera. It was also fitted with adjustable suspension and a unique body kit, including a dual-plane rear wing. The interior featured sports seats, whilst some of the interior trim was removed to keep weight down. Porsche also built a track focussed version of the GT3, dubbed the GT3 Club Sport. Only a handful of differences can be noted in comparison to the GT3, including the fitment of a full roll cage and a Nomex covered driver’s seat with side airbags omitted. Whilst not generally intended for daily driving, this edition was track-ready in every aspect and able to compete in a number of racing series worldwide. This example is one of the very last 996 GT3’s built and is truly one for the collector, having covered less than 7,000 miles from new with two private keepers. Our vendor purchased the car directly from the original owner in December 2022, to add to his collection of similar calibre modern classics. The car was specified in Atlas Grey Metallic (code LM7X) which is an exceedingly rare colour on the 996, as it was only introduced in 2004, the final year of production for the 996. Interestingly, the interior was specified with leather Recaro bucket seats and without the optional roll cage. This gives a vast area for luggage behind the front seats, which would usually be obstructed by a roll cage, making this the ideal configuration for spirited touring. A further addition to the interior is option code 981, leather wrapped dashboard. The service history for this GT3 is extraordinary, having been serviced exclusively by Porsche Tonbridge 12 times with the original owner, then most recently in February 2025 at Porsche Brooklands. Supplied to auction with all manuals and service booklets, invoices to back up every stamp in the book, a V5 registration document and an MoT test certificate valid until January 2026, this GT3 ticks all of the boxes. Supplied new in CaliforniaBeautifully rebuilt as 911 Carrera 2.7 RS EvocationOriginal five speed manual gearboxBuilt for comfort and to be usedThis left hand drive 1976 Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera S fitted with a five speed manual gearbox, was originally sold in California where it spent it’s life until it was purchased by the current owner and imported to the UK in March 2018. In its first year in the UK, an RS Lightweight conversion was carried out which included bodywork repairs and a full bare metal respray in 2018/19 which was carried out by OSC in Chessington. As the car had spent its pre-UK life in San Diego, California, there were only two minor areas of corrosion that needed addressing. The front wing extensions that house the indicators are metal and genuine Porsche parts and the rear engine cover is metal with a fibreglass ducktail spoiler fitted. The front bonnet has been replaced with a genuine Porsche period ‘long bonnet’. The car has been built to Lightweight rather than Touring specification, so both the front and rear bumpers are fibreglass as they would have been on an original car. Finished in Viper Green which is an original Porsche period factory colour, the paintwork is in very good condition throughout. The wheels are original Fuchs alloys with extremely rare deep-dish rears. The interior is largely original but some tasteful upgrades have been made as the owner wanted a usable classic with the external appearance of a '73 RS rather than a full replica. The steering wheel is the original, although it has been retrimmed in Nappa leather, as indeed has the dashboard. The present owner also added genuine 70's era Porsche electric seats with twelve-way control on the driver’s side and eight-way on the passenger side. Along with the seats, Porsche electric window mechanisms and switches and a modern face off radio were fitted to make the car more usable and comfortable. The original seats, manual window winders and mechanisms are available should a future owner wished to return the car to stock. The owner reports that the engine runs well and as the car started out as a 2.7 Carrera S, the engine is largely similar to a genuine RS. There have not been many upgrades to the engine, other than the correct twin exhaust system fitted and a replacement oil sump with oil drain. The warm-up regulator and the fuel injection distributor have both been rebuilt by renowned experts KMI. The fuel injectors have been replaced by Porsche specialists GT-One in Chertsey, who also completed all the other engine work. Servicing has been carried out on an annual basis and the most recent service replaced the oil, filters, plugs and leads. The four Continental tyres have done less than 200 miles. The car is supplied with a V5 registration document, its original owner’s manual/service book and two sets of keys. Accompanying this is a Porsche letter confirming the car has matching numbers, a file containing invoices from GT-One for the work completed and all of the invoices for parts and KMI work. There are service stamps in the warranty book that run to the early 2000's when car was parked up by its previous owner in California and mileages match from the last stamp to the car's odometer. Did you know? This Machamp Holo was only printed in 1st Edition, making thousands of collectors thinking they discovered a rare, expensive card when they rediscovered their childhood collections. The true rare and expensive Machamp is the non-holo version released in a Trainer Deck before the TCG released in North America. This card has been authenticated and graded by CGC and awarded an Near Mint+ 7.5.Grading report: A card graded 7.5 may also have a touch of wear on two or three corners or slightly rough edges. The image may be slightly out of register. A slight diamond cut is allowed, and very slight wax staining is allowed on the reverse. TCG cards could have a moderate defect or a number of small handling defects. For sports and non-sports cards, 65/35 centering is allowed.About this card: The Original Base Set went through a number of variations and printings through 1999 and not all of them are widely known. The first iteration is known as 1st Edition Shadowless. This variation is distinct from the others on two grounds: 1) The 1st edition circular stamp on the left-hand side of the card is clearly visible, and 2) A shadowless card has a different colour pallet than its unlimited counterpart. The official terminology is what’s known as missing the ‘drop shadow’ on the card, specifically around the art box but the best way to describe it is it kind of looks like the entire card is sun damaged/bleach.
