An exceptional example of Datsun's second generation 'Z-car' finished in the rarely seen Wine Red Metallic with low ownership and less than 30,000 miles. The Datsun 260Z was the second generation of 'Z' two-seat coupés produced by Nissan in Japan from 1975 to 1978. Its dramatic looks owed a considerable amount to a 1960's styling concept drawn by Count Albrecht Goertz for Datsun, presumably at a time when they were considering ways to break into the European sports car market.The 260Z coupé replaced the 240Z. The engine was enlarged with a longer stroke to 2.6-litres with a consequential increase in power from 150bhp to 165bhp and the car was stiffened by the extension of the chassis rails and the addition of a rear roll bar. Much like the 240Z, the car was fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard and the car featured independent suspension all round with MacPherson struts at the front and Chapman links at the rear. Rack and pinion power steering and front disc brakes meant that the 260Z remained a thoroughly modern package whilst retaining the classic good looks of its smaller engined predecessor. This exceptional example is finished in the rarely seen Wine Red Metallic (611) with a black cloth interior. It was supplied new by C. Ward Garages Ltd, the Datsun main dealer in Stevenage, on 24th August 1978 to its first of only two keepers. Pleasingly, the original Bill of Sale for £6,263 less a trade-in allowance for a Triumph TR7 remains in the car's history file. The file also contains the V5C, eight old MOT Certificates, an invoice for the first service by C. Ward with a matching stamp in the book, the original service book with four stamps, the last at 24,191 miles in October 1992, a copy of the original enquiry for a 260Z responded to by Datsun of Baker Street dated July 1978 and an original sales brochure with this car believed to be on the front coverThe second custodian acquired this special 'Z' car in 2015 and commenced a sympathetic recommissioning, returning the car to top form. The file contains numerous receipts for parts etc. including a bespoke stainless steel exhaust built by him to finish it off. Very Rare Set of German Optics from the 8.8cm German U-Boat Deck Gun, the optics still retain much of the original grey paint finish. Stamped with Kriegsmarine eagle and ‘M’ acceptance stamp, also ‘IV/5’, the other side with ‘Ik. D.F, 4x15°’ and ‘T bmk 99696’. Optics remain clear, no rubber lens covers. Very hard optical item to find. 

Rare WW2 German Kriegsmarine Issue P-38 Pistol Holster, fine example of a black leather hard shell pistol holster for the P-38. With securing strap to the front. The rear of the holster with the two belt loops. Stamped with makers mark in oval of Hans Romer Neu-Ulm. Also to the reverse is eagle and swastika flanked by Kriegsmarine markings ‘M III/8’. Under the marine stamping is the ‘P38’ and waffen-amt stamp with what appears to be ‘WaA 103’. Far corner of the holster with numbers ‘140558’. Shows some wear but generally a very good example. The reference work ‘Military Holsters of World War II’ by Eugene J Bender, page 81 which details that these holsters were issued to naval artillery anti-aircraft units and were worn between 1939 and early 1940.

An extremely rare 1919 ‘South Russia’ A.F.C., Order of St. Stanislaus, group of six awarded to Captain E. C. Baines, 47 Squadron, Royal Air Force, who served as the senior officer and R.E.8 instructor at the R.A.F. Instructional Mission, Ekaterinodar - a thankless task, fraught with danger due to the ineptitude of the general Russian pilot intake and unskilled mechanics; often leading to injury and fatalities during the instruction process Air Force Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued; British War and Victory Medals (Capt. E. C. Baines. R.A.F.); Defence Medal; Special Constabulary Long Service Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue, 1 clasp, Long Service, 1946 (Sergt. Edmund C. Baines); Russia, Empire, Order of St. Stanislaus, Military Division, Third Class neck badge, by Keibel, St. Petersburg, gold (56 zolotniki) and enamel, with crossed swords, Court stamp and maker’s mark to reverse, 1865-96 marks to suspension ring, mounted for display on card, minor green enamel damage to wreath on last, generally very fine (6) £2,800-£3,200 --- A.F.C. London Gazette 12 July 1920. The original recommendation states: ‘Ekaterinodar 18 May 1919 - 3 September 1919. For his services with and instructing in the air Russian pilots on R.E.8 machines. Lt. E. C. Baines has shown great perseverance, energy and skill and has carried out his duties in the air continually and energetically. He has the responsibility of testing in the air machines rigged by Russian mechanics who are often comparatively unskilled in their work.’ 1 of only 3 A.F.C.’s awarded for the whole of the South Russia campaign (the other two being awarded to Lieutenant E. J. Head and Flying Officer A. P. Ritchie - both also employed at the R.A.F. Instructional Mission, Ekaterinodar). Edmund Clifford Baines was born in 1897, and resided at Beckford, Bramhall Lane, Stockport. He initially joined the 6th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment (T.F.), prior to transferring to the Royal Air Force. Baines served with the R.A.F. in Aden, Egypt and Palestine, with 14 and 142 Squadrons during the latter part of 1918. He left Palestine, and was posted to join 47 Squadron in South Russia in July 1919. Baines was posted as a Captain to the R.A.F. Instructional Mission in August 1919 (later renamed South Russian Mission and ‘Z’ Squadron). All R.A.F. operational units were ordered to withdraw in late 1919, leaving only the Instructional Mission in situ. 47 Squadron remained as a volunteer unit, losing its identity and becoming known as ‘A’ Squadron. Baines was the senior officer employed at the R.A.F. Instructional Mission, and had the onerous task of teaching the Russians to fly: ‘Many of their students were hopelessly inept and others resented taking instruction from officers of lesser rank than themselves. The Russians crashed so many of the R.E.8’s that they spread the tale that the type had been condemned by the R.A.F., which had then foisted them off on to Deniken’s air service... This, of course, was completely untrue.... The trouble was the Russian pilots themselves and not the machines.’ (Air Command: A Fighter Pilot’s Story, by Air Vice Marshal R. Collishaw refers). An extract from a report from the R.A.F. Instructional Mission, included in part in the same publication as quoted above, is believed to have been penned by Baines as the senior officer present: ‘... in No. 6 Don Squadron only 6 pilots came for instruction instead of 10. One was sent away for disobedience of orders. One went solo once, and refused to fly anymore. One went solo once, crashed on his second solo and is now in hospital. One sprained his arm when due for solo. There remain two, of which we are not very hopeful of ever making either an R.E.8 pilot. In the case of Lt. Ritchie’s unit, one evening he reported three ready for solo next day. One died, one went sick, and the other was sent away on special duty to Kharkov. Capt. Head reports that in his Squadron he has no hope of two pilots out of seven ever going solo on R.E.8’s....’ Ritchie had an article published in The Hawk (the Journal of the R.A.F. Staff College) in 1928, which gives an excellent insight into the nature of the instructional duties carried out by the three instructors at the training mission (photocopy included with the lot). Baines left Russia in February 1920, and returned to the UK via Constantinople. He transferred to the Unemployed List in April 1920, and his award of the Order of St. Stanislaus is confirmed by MOD S10J (11 October 1976) and listed in White Russian Awards by R. Brough. On the recto of the end-leave, before the title sheet, a handwritten inscription in Latin, by a contemporary hand, ‘memoria di s[anc]ta catherina’, handwriting in clear cursive, brown ink. Noble stamp on the Titlepage. Signs of wear on the binding, internally slight browning and foxing, overall a good copy. Very rare Venetian post-incunabulum, illustrated. The work “Della divina Provvidenza” (Divine Providence) was dictated by Saint Catherine, in moments of mystical exaltation, to her secretaries Neri Pagliaresi, Stefano Maconi and Barduccio Canigiani. The Dialogue is composed of 167 chapters: the first seven constitute a sort of introduction, from IX to LXIV are entitled Trattato della discrezione (Treatise on Discretion), from LXV to LXXXIV Treatise on Prayer, followed by Il trattato della Provvidenza and Il trattato dell’Obbedienza (The Treatise on Providence and The Treatise on Obedience). Before the text, the writings of Pope Pius II and Barduccio Canigiani, followed by the proemial epistle with the dedication to Isabella of Aragon, Duchess of Milan, and Beatrice d'Este, Duchess of Bari and Milan, married to Ludovico Sforza called ‘Il Moro’. The work is printed by the Venetian typographer with his remarkable Gothic-Roman type, unique in its kind.

Rare Venetian incunabulum. Second edition of the complete works of Statius, with commentaries by Lattanzio, Calderini and Maturanzio. In the first book of the Silvae numerous marginalia by contemporary hand. The volume opens with the Thebaid, commented by Placido Lattanzio; follows the unfinished Achilleid, with commentary by Francesco Maturanzio; finally the Silvae, with commentary by Domizio Calderini. It also contains a ‘Life’ of Statius, a poem and a dedicatory letter to Francesco Ferdinando d’Aragona by Calderini and finally the elegy Sappho to Phaon by Ovid.A copy of prestigious provenance, belonging to Ercole Silva, who places the ex libris and the stamp with his coat of arms in the endpapers. Count Ercole Silva, 1756-1840, a prominent writer and scholar in Milanese culture between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, specialized in landscape architecture studies: his publication Dell'arte de' giardini inglesi is famous; he is in fact credited with having contributed to introducing the fashion of English gardens to Italy. He also expanded the vast library of Villa Silva in Cinisello Balsamo (now Villa Ghirlanda-Silva) created by his uncle Donato and in 1811 he composed the relative Catalogo de' libri della Biblioteca Silva in Cinisello (1811). The book collection was dispersed in the Parisian auction of February 1869.

Rare German WWI G.98 first pattern saw back bayonet and scabbard, the toothed blade stamped with Erfurt arsenal mark and 1900 inspector stamp, first pattern one piece wood grip, the guard stamped with unit mark '102 R. 9.176'. THIS LOT CANNOT BE POSTED. This is due to Parcelforce and other courier regulations which prohibit the postage of bladed items. Age verification ID will be required.69cm long The blade and other polished steel areas of the guard and scabbard have some black-speckled corrosion spots, on the scabbard mounts and pommel there is some surface corrosion spots. The edge of the blade is still reasonably sharp. The point of the blade is not razor sharp and is slightly rounded but still usable. The scabbard has a dent to it just ahead of the frog clip. The single-piece wood grip has some scratches and marks there is a split to the area between the guard and the first bolt. There is also a short split to the underside of the grip running away from the pommel. Despite these faults, the woodwork appears stable. The scabbard leather has some scuffs and marks throughout.
