His personal life was both helped and complicated after a few years when he and his literary agent Helga Greene became lovers, and rumours suggested at least attraction to other women in his life, namely Sonia Orwell (George Orwell's widow), and Natasha Spender (Stephen Spender's wife) and his secretary Jean Fracasse.The printed dedication is to both Helga and Jean - a parting gift before he died in March the following year, foreshadowing the fallout between the two women over his estate. Greene inherited his $60,000 estate, after prevailing in the 1960 lawsuit filed by Jean who contested Chandler's holographic codicil to his will, written four weeks before he died.  Following Greene's success in the courts, Helga hired Kathrine Sorley Walker and Dorothy Gardiner to compile Chandler's letters, essays and unfinished novel into a book, Raymond Chandler Speaking. Walker worked for Greene's literary agency for 25 years, until Greene's death. All together a duo of fascinating publication history from the celebrated, if often romantically provocative Raymond Chandler.

Bulhak, Jan -- Views of old Danzig. 1920s. 7 vintage toned gelatin silver prints on strong paper. 11 x 16 cm. Each with photographer's blindstamp in lower right corner, mounted to original cream card (minimal traces of use), each with number stamp in upper right corner of mount. Jan Bułhak was one of the most influential photographers in Poland between 1918-1939. He began photographing around 1905 and worked as an assistant to Hugo Erfurth in Dresden circa 1910-1911. In 1912, Bułhak opened his own studio in Wilno, Poland, and later lectured at Wilno University, where he became the head of the Institute of Photography in the Department of Fine Arts (1919-1939). In 1927, he co-founded the Wilno Photo-Club, followed by the Polish Photo-Club in 1929, where he also served as chairman. Highly active in the photography community, Bułhak exhibited in 174 fine art photography salons in Poland and internationally. Most of his photographs were destroyed during the war, making his vintage work exceptionally rare and seldom seen outside of Poland. – Fine tonal prints in near excellent condition.

"Ufa" photo stamp and annotated in pencil on the verso.In 1925, American jazz musician Sam Wooding brought his famous Chocolate Kiddies Orchestra to Berlin for the first time. They were the first large, all-Black jazz band to perform in many major European cities, achieving lasting success with their "Hot Jazz" style. Their Berlin debut took place on May 25, 1925, at the Admirals-Palast. During their 1925 and 1926 tours, the band recorded with VOX and Grammophon. On their fourth visit in 1930, they performed live at Berliner Rundfunk radio in a program titled "Music from America," offering a wide spectrum of music that demonstrated the origins of Black jazz.This image captures the band on their third visit to Berlin, performing at the Ufa-Palast theater in 1928. Their show, Die Schwarze Revue (The Black Revue), was part of the Ufa stage production, with a stage set designed by Rudi Feld, which likely influenced the design of the Nazi-era exhibit catalog for Entartete Musik (Degenerate Music) in the 1930s. Brandt, Christian Friedrich -- German-Danish War. 1864. Salted paper print. 17,5 x 21 cm. Mounted to original board (slightly soiled), with photographer's embossed stamp below the image on the mount.This rare and well-preserved photograph captures a group of Prussian officers and soldiers, posing for a souvenir photo amid the destroyed trenches surrounding the village of Düppel. Similar to Roger Fenton and Matthew Brady, the photographer C.F. Brandt faced the challenge of capturing war images only after the fighting had ceased, as exposure times were still lengthy. An experienced photographer, Brandt participated in the International Photography Exhibition in Berlin in 1865, where he was awarded a medal for his exceptional landscapes. – Minimal fading in lower and side edges, light spot in upper right corner, otherwise a strong print in very good condition.Provenance: Robert Lebeck Collection

DESMOULINS CAMILLE: (1760-1794) French Politician and Journalist, a prominent figure of the French Revolution. Desmoulins is best known for playing an instrumental role in the events that led to the Storming of the Bastille. He was also noted for his radical criticism of the Reign of Terror as the editor of the journal Le Vieux Cordelier. Desmoulins was closely related to the leading figures of the French Revolution, bieng a schoolmate and close friend of Maximilien Robespierre and was also a close friend and political ally of Georges Danton. In April 1794, Desmoulins was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Tribunal and guillotined alongside Danton and other accused Dantonists. Very rare D.S., `Camille Desmoulins´, one page, oblong 4to, Paris, 16th November 1793, in French. The partially printed document is a receipt of perpetual annuity signed by Desmoulins, stating `je soussigné Lucie-Simplice-Camille-Benoist Desmoulins, député de la Convention, commun en biens avec Anne-Lucie-Philippe Laridon ma femme, reconnait avoir reçu la somme de quatre cent cinquante livres…´ (Translation: "I, the undersigned Lucie-Simplice-Camille-Benoist Desmoulins, deputy of the Convention, with joint goods with Anne-Lucie-Philippe Laridon my wife, acknowledge having received the sum of four hundred and fifty pounds...") The document bears a contemporary legal ink stamp. Small overall minor staining with slightly trimmed edges, otherwise GIn April 1794, only few months after the present letter was signed, Desmoulins was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Tribunal and guillotined alongside Danton and other accused Dantonists at the very early age of 34.The present signature on this document is reproduced in the isographic dictionary of the National Convention by J.M. Courtois, edition La Poste d´Autrefois 2005

MIRO JOAN: (1893-1983) Spanish painter. A fine and extremely rare signed pochoir in colours on wove paper, with lithographic inscription at the base, approximately 24.5 x 32 cm, being one of just sixty Hors Commerce examples of Miro´s famous stencil print entitled Aidez l´Espagne (1937; ´Help Spain´), the brightly coloured design (incorporating the strong red and yellow colours of the Spanish and Catalan flags) depicting a Catalan peasant farmer wearing a barretina and with his right fist raised in a loyalist salute, framed above and below by the two words that form the motto, an exhortation to the citizens of neighbouring countries to support the government of the Spanish Republic, then immersed in the Civil War. The French printed text to the lower border states ´Dans la lutte actuelle, je vois du cote fasciste des forces depassees, et de l´autre cote des gens, avec d´immenses ressources creatives qui donneront a l´Espagne un elan qui etourdira le monde´ (Translation: ´In this present battle I see on the fascist side just the outdated forces, and on the other side, the people whose immense creative resources which will give Spain a power which will astonish the whole world´). Marked H.C. and signed (´Miro´) by the artist in pencil at the base. VGAidez l´Espagne was created by Miro in 1937 at the request of the art critic, collector, writer and publisher Christian Zervos with the idea that it could be issued as a one franc postage stamp to raise funds to finance the government of the Spanish Republic. Although Miro was not a deeply political artist, the project was carried out as part of the preparation and setup of the Spanish Republic pavilion for the 1937 Paris International Exposition, for which Miro also contributed his mural The Reaper (also known as The Catalan Peasant in Revolt). Miro´s striking graphic work was never issued as a postage stamp, but instead was published in two editions, of which the present signed Hors Commerce (´out of trade´) example is by far the rarer of the two. The other, unsigned edition, was published in numbers 4-5 of the Cahiers d´Art magazine, also in 1937, and is documented in the Catalogue Raisonné: Miró Recorder (1928-1960) by Jacques Dupin (p.40, No.17).

DANTON GEORGES: (1759-1794) French lawyer, a leading figure in the French Revolution who served as Minister of Justice (1792) and as the first President of the Committee of Public Safety (1793). Danton, who has been described as ´the chief force in the overthrow of the French monarchy and the establishment of the First French Republic´, was executed by guillotine at the age of 34. A rare D.S., Danton (a fine example), one page, folio, Paris, 3rd September 1792, in French. The manuscript document is headed ´Loi du trois Septembre 1792 l´an Quatrieme de la liberte´ (Translation: ´Law of the third of September 1792 in the fourth year of liberty´) and states, in part, ´L´Assemblee Nationale voulant accelerer pour tous les moyens qui sont en son pouvoir, l´arrivee des deux cents pieces de canons que le Ministre de la Guerre se propose de retirer des Cidevant Provinces de Standres et d´Artois et de la fonderie d´Indres, ainsi que de celles qu´il voudrait faire venir de toutes autres parts pour les porter dans le camp qui si forme sous les murs de Paris.......L´Assemblee Nationale apres avoir Decrete l´urgence, decrete que le Ministre de la guerre est autorise a se servir des chevaux de Poste pour la conduite de ces differentes pieces et les faire ainsi arriver a leur destination donner le delai le plus court. Au nom de la Nation, le conseil executif Provisoire mande et ordonne a tous les Corps administratifs et tribunaux que les presentes ils fassent consigner dans leurs registres, lire, publier et assister dans leurs departements et ressorts respectifs, et executer comme loi´ (Translation: ´The National Assembly wanting to accelerate by all the means which are in its power, the arrival of the two hundred pieces of cannon which the Minister for the War proposes to withdraw from the Cidevant Provinces of Standres and Artois and from the foundry of Indres, as well as those which it would like to make come from all other parts to carry them in the camp which is formed under the walls of Paris.....The National Assembly, having decreed the urgency, decrees that the Minister of War is authorized to make use of the horses of the Post Office for the driving of these various pieces and thus to make them arrive at their destination in the shortest possible time. In the name of the Nation, the Provisional Executive Council instructs and orders all the administrative bodies and courts that the present provisions be recorded in their registers, read, published and witnessed in their respective departments and jurisdictions, and executed as law´). NICHOLAS II OF RUSSIA: (1868-1918) Emperor of Russia 1894-1917. A rare and exceptional signed 7 x 11 photograph by the Tsar, a large and unusual size image depicting Nicholas II in a half length formal pose wearing his uniform. Signed in bold black ink `Nicholas´, in Cyrillic, to the white lower photographer´s mount. Also dated, 1909, in the Emperor´s hand, to the lower right corner. MALCOLM X: (1925-1965) African-American revolutionary, Black rights activist, and Muslim minister, a prominent figure during the civil rights movement in America. Assassinated. A rare A.L.S., Bro Malcolm, to the verso of a colour picture postcard depicting the Youth Building (also known as the Boys´ Club Building) recreational facility in Irving Park, Battle Creek, Michigan, n.d. (12th May 1955), to Roy Munford and family. Malcolm X commences with a Muslim salutation, ´As Salaam Alaikum´ (´Peace be unto you´) and sends his greetings from Battle Creek, further remarking ´This teaching is fast-spreading everywhere´. Hand addressed by Malcolm X to Munford and his family in Jersey City. The postcard features a postage stamp with a portrait of American President Thomas Jefferson and, interestingly, has been affixed upside-down in what was most likely a deliberate act of protest on the part of Malcom X. A few minor scuffs to the edge of the image, otherwise VGOn 24th January 1965, just a matter of weeks before being shot dead in New York, Malcolm X delivered a passionate speech in Harlem in which he encouraged a critical review of the narrative surrounding America´s ´founding fathers´, describing George Washington and his contemporaries as ´artful, skillful liars´ and the ´worst form of criminals´. Malcolm X declared that Thomas Jefferson was especially worthy of condemnation, proclaiming ´And if you doubt that they were [criminals], when they wrote this document talking about freedom, they still owned you. Yes, when they wrote, how does that thing go—about “all men created equal”?—that was later on. Who was it wrote that—”all men are created equal”? It was Jefferson. Jefferson had more slaves than anybody else. So they weren’t talking about us´. Due to this hypicrosy, Malcolm X continued, African-Americans should look upon Jefferson with the same contempt he showed them.

WALLENBERG RAOUL: (1912-1945) Swedish architect, diplomat and humanitarian who served as Sweden's special envoy in Budapest from July - December 1944 during which time he was responsible for saving thousands of Jews in German-occupied Hungary during the Holocaust in the latter stages of World War II. A rare World War II date D.S., with his initial R, as was his custom, one page, folio (unfolded), Budapest, 30th August 1944. The partially printed document (in the blue and yellow of Sweden´s national colours) is completed in typescript and is a Schutz-Pass (a protective pass which also served, despite not being legal, as a Swedish passport) numbered 49/83 and issued to Aurel Fold, providing details of his date of birth (6th October 1877), eye and hair colour, and height, and with his affixed identification photograph bearing the oval ink stamp of the Royal Swedish Legation and signed beneath by Fold. The printed text of the document is in both German and Hungarian and states, in part, (translated) ´The Royal Swedish Legation in Budapest confirms that the above-named person will travel to Sweden as part of the repatriation authorised by the Royal Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The person concerned is also included in a collective passport. Until departure, the above-named person and his apartment are under the protection of the Royal Swedish Legation in Budapest´ and also confirming the the pass is valid until fourteen days after the subject´s entry into Sweden. Countersigned at the foot by the Swedish diplomat and ambassador Carl Ivan Danielsson (1880-1963) in his capacity as head of the Royal Swedish Legation and alongside a second oval ink stamp. A highly emotive document, of incalculable value to the Jewish bearer who, without this protrective pass, would have otherwise been destined to an unimaginable fate; the Nazi´s at this time were dispatching more than 10,000 Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz on a daily basis. Some light overall age wear and minor staining to the edges and, as is the usual case with such documents, there is some light wear to the original central vertical and horizontal folds which have been neatly and professionally strengthened to the verso. GWallenberg arrived in Hungary in July 1944 when only 230,000 Jews remained in the country. The diplomat quickly set about distributing the Schutz-Passes which he had devised, signing them quickly and by the dozen. Although not legal, the ´protective passports´ looked official and, identifying the subjects as Swedish subjects awaiting repatriation, they were readily accepted by the German and Hungarian authorities. Significantly, and for the holder´s added security, Wallenberg and the Swedish legation in Budapest also succeeded in negotiating with the German authorities so that the bearers would be exempt from having to wear the yellow star required for Jews. Despite Wallenberg issuing many such passes, very few survive today.

WAGNER ADOLF: (1890-1944) German important member of the Nazi Party. leader in the "Night of the Long Knives". Wagner was appointed Gauleiter of Gau Munchen-Oberbayern. He lost his right leg when serving in World War. Attractive printed folded beige stiff signed `Adolf Wagner´, one page, oblong 8vo, Munich, 6th October 1936, to Hermann Ruf family, in German. The document bears to the upper left front corner an embossed monogram with the Nazi eagle and swastika over the printed text "Der Gauleiter Munchen-Oberbayern" and states `On October 1st you thought of me on my 46th birthday and sent me a hearty congratulation for which I would like to thank you for it.´ Above Wagner´s signature bearing the printed text "Heil Hitler", and beneath "State Minister". Accompanied by the original envelope, bearing several Nazi postmarks and stamp. Also including a colour 8 x 12 photograph, unsigned, showing Wagner outdoors, in a half length pose, wearing his Nazi uniform during a parade. VG Wagner served as the master of ceremonies for the annual commemorations of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch every 9 November in Munich. He was also Bavarian Minister of the Interior and Education. Remembered for his 1941 order stating that school prayer should be replaced by Nazi songs and that crucifixes and religious pictures be removed from Bavarian classrooms. When Wagner died in April 1944, the increasingly reclusive Fuhrer made a rare public appearance to attend his funeral, and posthumously awarded him the German Order, the Nazi Party's highest decoration. Rare 8 mm color film of Wagner appears in the home movies (1938) filmed by Hitler's companion, Eva Braun. He can be seen talking with Hitler on the terrace of Hitler's Bavarian residence the Berghof.

DONITZ KARL: (1891-1980) German Grand Admiral of World War II who briefly succeeded Adolf Hitler as head of state, serving as President of Germany from April – May 1945. A rare A.L.S., Donitz, to one side of an official Prisoner of War post card (´Postkarte fur Kriegsgefangene´), n.p. (Nuremberg), 21st September (1945), to Fritz Weber, in German. Donitz writes in bold pencil, using block capitals, thanking his correspondent for their letter, which Donitz had been pleased to receive, and expressing his hope that Weber´s transition to the civilian sector had worked out, further remarking (translated) ´I think very often of all you brave navy men, we can be proud of what a decent, valiant navy we had and how honourable our submarine war was. Let the others now do as they like!´. Hand addressed by Donitz to the verso, which also features the Censored & Passed stamp of the International Military Tribunal. JOHN MANTON & SON, LONDON A RARE CASED 14-BORE TUBELOCK DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 7535, for 1820 with later conversion from flintlock, 27in. twist barrels of near ball weight with mostly illegible 6 Dover Street signature to the top-rib, the underside bearing a Theo.
