Lot 87

A second-quarter 19th century, French tapestry depicting The Miraculous Draught of FishesAtelier La Foret, the border designed by Viollet le Duc, after the series of the Acts of the Apostles cartoons by Raphael, commissioned by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel, Vatican, Rome,Designed with the New Testament scene depicting the fisherman Simon, later called Peter, as he is called to be a disciple of Jesus'. The bearded figure of Simon, dressed in a blue tunic, kneeling before Christ, his hands clasped together, the large catch can be seen overflowing in the boats and the nets appearing to be close to bursting with fish, another bearded figure, probably Andrew, stands behind Simon, his hands outstretched in disbelief, the boat behind this containing yet more fish and three bewildered fishermen, the immediate foreground, depicting the shore of the Sea of Galilee, three herons standing to the bottom left, a fruiting tree stump to the bottom right, the middle ground with townscape and rolling hills and peasant folk, the hazy sky filled with birds and rolling clouds, the whole enclosed by an elaborate rich border with ribbon tied swags, pendant fruit and foliate groups, on a 'Bleu de Roi' ground, with slender inner crimson border divided by narrow bamboo shoots, the corners with bound stems in trefoil motif, with later green outerslip which has later repairs and alterations. 530cm x 507cm approximatelyFootnotes:ProvenanceBy repute presented to the 4th Earl of Clarendon by Napoleon III at the Conference of Paris (viz 1873 notes by Katherine, Countess of Clarendon)The 4th Earl of Clarendon was born in 1800 into the Villiers family and served as an English diplomat and statesman. After coming down from Cambridge he was appointed attaché to the British embassy at Saint Petersburg where he remained for three years. Later in his career, Clarendon, in his capacity as Foreign Secretary, kept a close relationship with Emperor Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie. At the Congress of Paris in 1856, when the Crimean War ended, Clarendon was the first British plenipotentiary to attend such a conference in person to negotiate a peace treaty since Lord Castlereagh. The original Raphael cartoons were commissioned by Pope Leo X in 1513 shortly after his election. The monumental designs are designed with key episodes of the lives of Saint Peter and Paul. All of the cartoons depicting the life of Saint Peter have survived -these include Christ's Charge to Peter, The Death Ananias, The Healing of the Lame Man and The Miraculous Draught of Fishes. The latter scene (used for the design of the present lot) depicts the founding moment of Christianity set on the Lake of Gennesaret in the Sea of Galilee -when Simon (later called Peter) is summoned to be Christ's first apostle. Simon kneels before Christ who raises his hand in blessing saying Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. James and John standing hunched in the other boat as they haul in the catch would also become followers of Christ -their father Zebedee can be seen trying to keep the boat steady. These figures in particular are reminiscent of the art of Michelangelo -more specifically the lost cartoon of the Battle of Cascina which show nude males kneeling over a riverbank. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. [ASCENT OF MONT BLANC]: A fascinating, lengthy A.L.S. by Dr. Edmund Clark, closely written over four pages, 4to, Chamonix, 27th August 1835, to Reverend Robert Warrener. Clark writes in the midst of his Grand Tour and provides a detailed account of his successful ascent of Mont Blanc, penned in the immediate aftermath of his remarkable feat, beginning by explaining ´I have postponed my letter in hope of meeting with something of greater interest to write about, nor perhaps should I have now commenced had I not lately succeeded in an excursion of some difficulty, an account of which may help to fill my sheet. Yesterday at 3pm I reached the summit of Mont Blanc, the greatest elevation in Europe with Captain Sherwill a young English officer. This forms the 12th successful ascent of Mont Blanc, of which 6 have been accomplished by English insects´ and continuing to offer an insight into the many places in Italy and Switzerland he had visited before the ascent, ´Having seen the lions at Paris, whisked off to salute the bears at Berne. Spent a halfpenny in feeding the big brown bear with ginger bread-nuts making him stand up & catch the projected fragments in their descent towards his monstrous gaping mouth´, mentioning a famous belle in Brienz regarded as the prettiest woman in Switzerland (´the say [she] has got a lout of a fellow for a husband that thrashes her, the scoundrel´), and the Chillon Castle (´saw Byron´s name cut by himself in the dreadful dungeon´), as well as stops at Milan (where Clark viewed a picture by Leonardo da Vinci), Verona, Padua, Venice (´fine gondola lounges, the most luxurious sort of locomotion under the sun´) as well as Florence where they´Doffed our hats to the Venus de´Medici´ and also saw statues by Michelangelo, and Rome, writing ´Florence is a positively enchanting residence.....such I was in the good Pope´s dominions, a German baron & Swedish countess joined us [for] breakfast at the port before Rome.....In 3 hours we were at the gates of Rome. I entered it on foot & bare headed as is duty bound. Modern Rome is a dismal affair, but the old Ruins!´, before travelling to Naples (´through the horrid dens of cut-throats´) and to Pompeii, ´the most interesting of all objects in Italy. Scrambled up to the lofty top of Vesuvius. Such a view over the Isles of Capri´. Clark then offers an extensive report of his mountaineering exploits, ´...up the Brevent about 17,000 feet. Then a formidable day´s work up the Buel (?) a height of more than 10,000 feet. Here poor Mr. Eschen sunk into a chasm.....next morning he was found frozen to death......We looked down upon this fatal spot. I accompanied Dr. Benjamin Babington from India. It was one of the noblest views I ever saw. We were surrounded with a forest of snowy alpine peaks. Next to Mt. Blanc it is the highest accessible mountain in this part of the chain. Thursday Aug 25 with seven guides started for the top of the mountain king. It is two years since the last ascent & 5 since 3 guides were killed in an unsuccessful attempt. Ascended to the base of the Aiguille du Midi to breakfast then left Terra Firma & embarked on the dreary ocean of ice & snow. The ice is cut & creviced in such a manner that we had often half an hour´s work to advance 40 yards climbing up walls of ice by holes cut with a hatchet, or taking hold of the end of an ice pole to scramble up. We were fastened together with cords. In many places we walked over a thin slippery ledge with a deep blue chasm of 200 to 300 feet on each side.......We marched on the ice that day 7 hours & then arrived at an islet of bare rocks that rise up in the midst of the snows & are called Les Grands Mulets. Here we were dragged up a high precipice with the help of ropes & so reached the comfortable hotel. This hotel is a platform as big as an ironing table covered with snow. The snow we scraped away in some degree & then turned up the dry side of the stones (such is the unhappy tendency of man to luxurious indulgence). Lighted a fire. Manufactured some punch......Then stretched ourselves to sleep covered with a blanket & a sheet at a height much greater than the top of Skiddaw or Ben Nevis, and the thermometer at freezing. It was a lovely moon light night. No sound of insect or of bird, nothing but the awful roar of avalanches around & beneath us. 26th of August Friday, all dressed at 4 o´clock......then again embarked on the snows.......Stopped by a long crevice. Crossed it upon a bridge formed of 5 ice poles placed from edge to edge. Felt rather as if snuffing the candle with one´s finger. Then climbed up the opposite side by cutting holes with the axe. After this comfortable trudging in the snow but rather deep till the Petit Plateau, a place of snow covered with an avalanche. Crossed it & arrived at the Grand Plain. Height about 13,000 feet. Heat of the sun burning and blistering to the eyes & face......began to feel the effect of rarity of the air - headache, no appetite.......arrived at the spot where the 3 brave guides perished in an avalanche while trying to ascend with a Russian physician & statesman in 1820. Their bodies have never been found. The crevice into which they were buried by the avalanche is still somewhat visible. Two of the 7 guides with us were nearly killed in that dreadful catastrophe. Now began to ascend the steep icy wall of the summit. We were nearly 4 hours in ascending one vast slope being obliged to cut a passage with the axe very often. Here one slip wd. have been serious. You wd. probably have glided down the frozen inclined plain with immense velocity.......We now became very cold, our shoes.....as hard as iron, our faces pale & shrunk. Respiration uneasy, Intense headache. My friend had great nausea also. At last we reached the Petit Mulets. The loftiest rocks in the line of ascent. From this a steep hard plain of snow leads directly to the summit. We lay down on the snow, panted & puffed away, again for 10 yards, then lay down again; eat a little snow; up again (the guides too were already exhausted) How many more starts to the top? Three said the brave guides......and in two desperate efforts we were on the pinnacle of Europe. My friend arrived a moment or two after & such was his exhaustion that the moment his guide called out Nous voici sur le sommet de Mt. Blanc he burst into a flood of tears. We were both utterly worn out with fatigue, rarity of air. Cold & inability to eat. The thermometer was below freezing even in the sun......The sky deep indigo approaching to violet. The view immense......all in a vast panorama laid at our feet. In the highest rock I placed olive twigs brought from Italy for the purpose.....all these are enclosed in a strong cylinder of glass.......& placed in......the rocks so securely that when the storms of a thousand years are gone by & our dust is mixed with kindred earth, still I think it possible that the little record may remain unhurt. We descended hastily slept on the Grands Mulets on our delicious bed of rocks & today rejoined the valley. No one seriously hurt. I had one foot a little frozen......We are all full of gaiety for it is not too often that an ascent is at once so successful & so pleasant. It is my intention to write a small pamphlet on the ascent & to send you a copy´. With address panel to the final page of the bifolium. An excellent letter containing a rare first hand account of an early 19th century ascent of Mont Blanc. Some minor staining and age wear and toning and with a few small, neat splits and tears, G

MICHELANGELO MAESTRI, Italian (1802-1812), Allegorical Classical figures for 'Peace & War'; 'Wisdom & Knowledge',  a pair, after the Roman frescoes at Pompeii and Herculaneum, Grand Tour, gouache on paper, 46cm x 35cm. (2) One painting depicts 'Peace & War', with the Greek Godess Eirene holding an Olive Branch & The God Ares holding a Bow, set with a panel below decorated with birds beside a classical terme, the other picture similarly depicts Athena and Apollo, representing 'Wisdom & Knowledge'.  Michelangelo Maestri is well know for his gouache paintings (bodycolours) that were inspired by recently discovered wall frescos in Pompeii and Herculaneum.  The painting proved to be enormously popular amongst travellers on their Grand Tour.  He also drew inspiration from Renaissance artists such as Raphael Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520) and Giulio Romano (circa 1499 -1546).  He is well known for his works 'The Hours of Day & Night' which were effectively copied from the now lost Raphael originals.  It is worth comparing Raphael's drawing for Allegory of Peace in the National Museum (inventory number: 065237-069).  There is significant resemblance to the figure of Athena in the present lot.

Emily Young (British, born 1951)Blue Angel Head Brazilian sodalite55.7 cm. (21 7/8 in.) high (excluding the base)Carved in 2005UniqueFootnotes:ProvenancePrivate Collection, U.S.A., since 2005Emily Young is an artist highly tuned in with and aware of the past. She has always theorised on a scope of ideas much larger than the immediate artistic context, bringing 'the human project of meaning into conjunction with geological time' and beyond, taking into consideration the cosmic origins of the stone she works (R Trew, Emily Young, www.emilyyoung.com). Emerging from the block as if over aeons, her work participates in an idea of sculpture that dominated the artistic paradigm of the pre-eminent Renaissance sculptor, Michelangelo – who in turn drew very consciously from Ovid's mythical Pygmalion: the idea that the work lies imprisoned within the block of stone, waiting to be released. Considering Young's Heads alongside Michelangelo's group of Slaves (Accademia, Florence) brings this idea to the fore, and ties the present piece, and its place within Young's wider oeuvre, both to a deep sense of sculptural inheritance and to the more 'geological' context that the idea itself implies. But to think of Young's work as paying homage to the past without an eye to the present and future would be mistaken. Tied in thematically with the geological past of her work is where this has taken us to, and the direction to which it leads: in her own words, 'Hyper-industrialisation has encouraged us humans of the developed world to profoundly misread the planet we live on', and this misreading has resulted in the debate over whether we are entering a new geological age – the Holocene – one that is defined by our own impact on the world around us (Emily Young, Emily Young, www.emilyyoung.com). A testament to Young's focus toward this is her part in this year's 60th edition of Venice Biennale, titled Carbon II: Carbon Capture Art, where her work is now on display at the Palazzo Mora as part of an exhibition based on the importance of the arts in tackling climate change. Within this context, Blue Angel Head comes in as a work in many ways typical of Young's output, but in others, crucially outstanding. In its emergence from the stone, it firmly partakes in the ideas that so preoccupied Young's sculptural predecessors. However, where some of her works lie more passively within the stone – as if serenely dormant in expectation of being meticulously and painstakingly drawn out – this feels emphatically active, almost assertive. It has an agency in its emergence from the stone, like it is working with the artist, breaking free as Young loosens the chains. As outstanding as the energy of Blue Angel Head is the material it is worked from: Brazilian sodalite, which is rare within Young's oeuvre. An ornamental stone, the strong blue adds an incredible depth to the work, punctuated powerfully by the streaks of white that separate sodalite from its cousins lazurite and lapis lazuli – reminders of the geological vein running thematically throughout Young's work. Where others avoid the unpredictability of these inclusions in the mineral, Young embraces them, delighting in its faults, veins, splits and idiosyncratic form that inject an urgency to the work's unquenchable desire to escape. Sodalite is opaque in massive blocks, but has a translucence in thinner areas that give the present work a subtle, transient glow, something that cannot be replicated in mineral of a duller tone. Young seems keenly aware of the sense that her work will outlast us, that in freeing the stone of its prison and into its human form, she is preserving an image of ourselves that is timeless in its still beauty and empathy, yet intensely contemporary in its concern. She recognises the vulnerability of that which she depicts: 'the short-lived and organic' humanity (Emily Young, Emily Young, www.emilyyoung.com). As Young grapples with our vulnerability, Blue Angel Head breaks free from its block, eager to animate as if by Pygmalion himself. We are grateful to the Artist and EY Sculpture UK Ltd for their assistance in cataloguing the present work. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR TP* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.TP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. MICHELANGELO CERQUOZZI (ITALIAN 1602-1660) AND ANGELUCCIO (ITALIAN 1620-1650) ROMANTIC LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES AND A BRIDGE Oil on canvas 122 x 153cm (48 x 60 in.)Provenance: Private collection, Trier, by the early 18th century By descent in the family By whom sold, Cologne, Van Ham Kunstauktionen, 8 April 2006, lot 1561, for €125,000 (as Michelangelo Cerquozzi and the landscape attributed to Angeluccio)With David Wade Fine Art, Yorkshire where acquired This colourful landscape is an interesting example of a collaborative work between two painters based in Rome in the mid-17th century.Michelangelo Cerquozzi was a leading member of the Bamboccianti: a group of predominantly foreign artists active in the Eternal City, who worked in the manner of Pieter van Laer (1599-1642), called il Bamboccio, producing small works that focused on contemporary Italian street-life. Cerquozzi's most accomplished pictures blend the naturalism of the Bamboccianti with strong narrative or anecdotal characteristics, exemplified here by the comedic element of the dog crouching in the foreground.Angeluccio is a more enigmatic artist by comparison, whose real name, nationality, and dates are unknown to us today. He is recorded, however, as a student of Claude Lorrain (1600-1682): the biographer Pascoli mentions him in 1730, noting that: 'Claude only had one well-known student, Angeluccio, who died young and could do little work.'1 The staffage in his pictures was usually executed by Cerquozzi, as in the present example, or else by Jan Miel (1599-1664). Interestingly, Angeluccio was also known as a draughtsman of plant studies. One of his sheets in the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen, Berlin, may have been used as a preliminary study for the lower left quadrant of this painting.2 1 M. UV light reveals various scattered retouches, most visible on the greenery of the tree at the centre, and a few dotted restorations in the sky. Furthermore, a 8 cm L-shaped restoration is present near the river in the bottom right corner which might cover a past tear. Next the tree, near the buildings in the background, are present superficial scratchers at the layer of the varnish. To conclude, a few retouches are also visible on the figures in the foreground and there are a few dotted traces of paint loss in the bottom left corner and near the centred tree. A French bronze group of the Laocoön, After the Antique, late 19th century, Depicting the Trojan priest and his two sons being attacked by snakes, on a stepped rectangular base, with cast signature F. BARBEDIENNE. FONDEUR. and stamped with A. COLLAS BREVETTE REDUCTION MÉCANIQUE cachet, 45.5cm high, 31.8cm wide, 15.8cm deep      Footnotes: Note: This sculpture is a reduced bronze version of the Laocoön, which is one of the most iconic marble statues from Roman antiquity. It depicts a scene in Book II of Virgil’s Aeneid, where the Trojan priest Laocoön and his two sons are attacked by snakes sent by the goddess Minerva after he warned the people of Troy not to bring the Greek’s gift of the wooden horse into the city walls. The original was discovered near the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome on 14 January 1506, and has since been the subjection of extensive artistic reproduction. It is mentioned in Pliny the Elder’s Natural History as a ‘work superior to any painting and any bronze’ - [Natural History 36.37]. It attracted the attention of Renaissance artists including Michelangelo and his contemporaries and it greatly influenced future works. Upon its discovery, Pope Julius purchased the statue and transferred it to the Cortile Belvedere and it is currently on display in the Vatican’s Pio Clementino Museum. This version was produced by the foundry of Ferdinand Barbedienne, 1810-1892, whose workshop in Paris specialised in bronze reductions of famous sculpture from the Antique, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Achille Collas, 1795-1859, was a French engineer and inventor who developed processes to reproduce bronzes at a smaller scale, known as the ‘réduction méchanique’, transforming the bronze industry by enabling the recreation of smaller scale reproductions of famous sculptures.
