* GARRY BRANDER (SCOTTISH b. 1983), THE WATCH TOWER oil on board, signed, titled versoframed and under glassimage size 58cm x 58cm, overall size 82cm x 82cmNote: Garry Brander began his studies in 2005 obtaining his HND in graphic design in 2007, winning several awards including the Trade House of Scotland ‘Best 2D Painting’. He began exhibiting his artwork in and around the west coast of Scotland and shortly after made the decision to attend the Glasgow School of Art. Graduating in 2011 with a BA Honours in Fine Art, he enjoyed a sell-out degree show. Garry spends much of his time painting the highlands and islands of Scotland, particularly the island of Tiree, where his family has lived and worked the old watermill and surrounding crofts for over 500 years. His love of the West Coast has inspired his paintings and living on the islands, learning about remoteness, isolation and the beauty of the beaches and landscapes, has forged the artist he has become. His upbeat and vibrant modern palette raises the viewer’s level of emotional engagement with his paintings and reminds them that Scotland is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Garry Brander’s contemporary artwork is in private collections all over the world and has been exhibited in Art Fairs from New York to London and Amsterdam. He also exhibits with many of Scotland’s best-known galleries and has had many successful solo exhibitions.

BALLINDALLOCH (GLENFARCLAS) 1965 40 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS LAING OLD MALT CASK SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT Distilled: 04/1965Bottled: 07/2005Matured in Sherry Butt #19791 of 289 bottles50% ABV / 70cl Still independently owned, Glenfarclas has been operated by the Grant Family since 1865 when John Grant bought the distillery for the princely sum of £511.19s.0d. In today’s money that’s about £69,000, so still a bargain. The distillery’s microclimate ensures one of the lowest Angel’s Shares in Scotland, allowing Glenfarclas to release staggeringly old expressions that still boast eye watering ABVs, and their (almost) exclusive use of European oak Sherry Casks results in a whisky that’s resinous and rich in dried fruit notes. Fill level is at the top of the shoulder. The bottle labels are in excellent condition. There is some minor wear to the carton, consistent with age. Please see additional photos.

CRAIGELLACHIE 1973 22 YEAR OLD RARE MALTS SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT Distilled: 1972Bottle Number: 286060.2% ABV / 70cl Craigellachie is another distillery that actively encourages sulphurous notes in its spirit by minimising copper contact during the distillation process. This is balanced by a long fermentation beforehand, allowing tropical fruit notes to emerge. Much like fellow Speysiders Mortlach, Benrinnes and Cragganmore, this makes it highly sought after by blenders. In 2014 the brand was relaunched as a single malt, and several of their expressions have won industry awards. Some creases on label and box. Fill level lower neck. Please see additional pictures.

Lot 161

GLENMORANGIE 1971 CULLODEN VINTAGE HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT Distilled: 1971Bottled: 25/10/1995Bottle Number: 212343% ABV / 70cl Famous for their unique stills, each as tall as an adult giraffe, and their passion for innovation, Glenmorangie remains one of the best-selling single malts in the world. They were one of the first distilleries to experiment with cask finishing; the process of transferring spirit from one cask type to another in order to impart additional characteristics and flavours. To further this agenda of innovation, in September of 2021 Glenmorangie began production at their new “Lighthouse” facility, a futuristic R&D department protruding from the heart of their traditional distillery complex like a monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Off limits to the public, it is home to a “sensory lab” as well as two of Glenmorangie’s signature stills, each of which plays host to several classified modifications. Only time will tell what exciting innovations will filter down to the rest of the industry. Bottle and box are both in good condition. Fill level mid-shoulder. Please see additional pictures

An Omani Thaler -Silver / White metal necklace. Circa 1900 This Omani necklace comprises a round silver and overlaid-gold sunburst disk, eight silver Maria Theresa thaler coins, and twenty seven silver double barrel-shaped beads. Maria Theresa thalers have been struck in Austria since the reign of Empress Maria Theresa of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Empress died in 1780 and since that time, all thalers that were subsequently struck were minted with that date regardless of the actual year that they were produced. The coins achieved such a level of trust for their silver content (which is 83.3% silver) in the Middle East that neither the design nor the date was varied, and so for more than 200 years the coins were used as an international currency among the tribes and the states of the Middle East, in much the same was as the Spanish dollar was used as an international currency at the time elsewhere. The thalers were used to complete most important transactions locally and were also given as dowries. They were also an important source of silver and were melted locally for jewellery. The coins made their way to the ports of the Red Sea, Egypt and northern Africa from the ports of Genoa, Trieste, Livorno and Marseille. European traders used the coins to buy precious materials from the Gulf and northern Africa which it desired – commodities such as spices, coffee, gum Arabic, indigo, pearls, and tortoise shell. The importance and the beauty of the coins saw them incorporated into local jewellery most particularly in Oman and Yemen. Approx. 50cm length. The necklace is in good condition. Wear commensurate with age.  References Al-Jadir, S., Arab & Islamic Silver, Stacey International, 1981. Harrigan, P., ‘Tales of a Thaler’, Saudi Aramco World, January/February 2003.
