ABRAHAM SOLOMON (BRITISH 1824 - 1862), MOTHER AND DAUGHTER oil on board, signed and dated 1854framedimage size 36cm x 31cm, overall size 46cm x 41cm Note: Abraham Solomon (London 7 May 1823 – 19 December 1862 Biarritz) was a British painter. The second son of eight children born to Meyer Solomon, a Leghorn hat manufacturer and his wife Catherine (Kate) Levy. His father was one of the first Jews to be admitted to the freedom of the city of London, and the family resided in Sandys Street, Bishopsgate in east London. Two of Abraham's siblings were also artists: his sister, Rebecca Solomon (1832–1886), and his youngest brother, Simeon Solomon (1840–1905), who acquired much acclaim as an associate of the Pre-Raphaelites and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1858 to 1872; his later crayon drawings of idealized heads are still popular. At the age of thirteen Abraham became a pupil in Sass's school of art in Bloomsbury, and in 1838 gained the Isis silver medal at the Society of Arts for a drawing from a statue. In 1839 he was admitted as a student of the Royal Academy, where he received in the same year a silver medal for drawing from the antique, and in 1843 another for drawing from the life. Solomon died in Biarritz in France, of heart disease, on 19 December 1862, the same day on which he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy. He married, on 10 May 1860, Ella, sister of Dr. Ernest Hart; she survived her husband.

Gilded bronze figure. Depicting three Buddhas arranged on a beautiful altar. The central, larger figure is shown seated in ‘dhyanasana’, with his body covered by long robes, his hair tied in a high bun, and two long ears framing his serene face with a gentle smile and narrowed eyes. Both hands are placed at chest level, palms facing forward, fingers clasped in ‘Apana mudra’. Flanking the Buddha are his acolytes, similar in appearance to the central figure, with their bodies erect on small lotus stands, hair tied back in a tall traditional hat, long robes covering their bodies and hands also arranged in ‘Apana mudra’. The three deities are arranged on a stepped rectangular pedestal, decorated with reliefs of lions and traditional elements, finished at the back with a high backrest in the form of flames with incised Buddhist elements. RINALDO RINALDI (1793-1873), A GOOD PAIR OF WHITE MARBLE ALLEGORICAL FIGURES OF WOMEN ITALIAN, THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY Emblematic of agriculture and sea-faring, each on a naturalistic base, signed Rinaldo Rinaldi F. Roma. 101cm and 99cm high Provenance: Sold Christie's London, 31st October 1996, Lot 420 (£16,100 incl. BP). Acquired From Anthony Outred Born in Padua in 1793, Rinaldo Rinaldi studied at the Academy of Arts in Venice under the direction of Pietrò Zandomeneghi (d.1866) and in 1812 went on to study under Canova, before becoming an academician of San Luca in 1830. A portraitist and monument sculptor, Rinaldi received many public commissions, including figures of Adonis and Titian for the vestibule of the Academy of Venice. He exhibited regularly in Rome and at the Turin exhibition of 1854. Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Both with fairly dirty surface with some engrained surface dirt, scattered natural inclusions throughout to both- some darker- some small holes (agriculture face notably) and sections of veining (notably to left elbow agriculture) Agriculture- generally good- some mild nibbles and losses (peak of hat, grape section, tip of billhook, larger inclusion loss to shovel blade) old crack to right ankle but this may be from natural flaws Seafaring- under UV the whole showing signs of later applied wash- front of plinth and neck restored with thin crack still visible to neck and larger gap to base under natural light- wash possibly hiding further work including hands, nose rubbed and worn and with further small areas of contact loss Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. The piece wobbles a little on its base with some loose joints; however, the whole piece appears relatively stable. Overall, it appears in slightly distressed condition.
