CELINE LOUIS-FERDINAND: (1894-1961) French novelist. A.L.S., with his initials LFC, three pages, folio, Copenhagen, 31st August (1947), to [Dr. Alexandre Gentil] (´Mon cher vieux´), in French. Celine, whilst exiled in Denmark, writes on a variety of subjects and attempts to arrange a meeting in Paris between his correspondent and his lawyer, Thorvald Mikkelsen, stating, in part, ´Ypéricon C’est le nom scientifique et danois, et allemand et anglais. What is it in French? [The French name for the plant is Millepertuis (Hypericum perforatum)].Squeezed fresh [and] yellow, this flower yields purple sugar. The Danes make great use of it [Céline adds in the upper margin ‘needless to say, I've never tasted it!’], macerating it in 90° alcohol and getting drunk on this beverage [which] then takes on a dark pink colour. Do you recognise this flower and this beverage? Can you tell me where in France you'll find such a flower, and where in France you'll get drunk on the same spirit? My patriotic self-esteem is at stake... this flower this plant grows in the woods and seems to bloom all summer long. Mikkelsen plans to be in Paris at the beginning of October. I'll tell you which hotel. The apple harvest will last throughout September. He expects to harvest 140,000 kroner. That's about 6 million francs. That's a nice penny, but about two thirds of that is expenses and tax. You can see that I'm not just talking. The honey from the bees has returned. But this is a humble operation. On sale, it's too cold here for the bees. (Oh don't tell him it's cold up north!). Besides, he didn't give us a jar of honey (it's one of his bigarreries) A susceptible one! You're going to have a great time. You'll get on famously!.....Here he's a lawyer for the British and American embassies. So he's absolutely optimistic. Underneath = denial of naivety. Half cunning. But an admirable heart - This guy is tasty - miserly and generous etc. You know these contrasts. A virgin for us.....I'm waiting for your reply to stun these fools, confuse them and humiliate them to death!´) Celine also signs (´Lucette´) at the conclusion on behalf of his wife, the French dancer Lucette Destouches (1912-2019). Accompanied by a typed document confirming brief biographical details for Celine (named as Louis Ferdinand Destouches) issued for the purposes of receiving a military pension. Some light age wear to the letter and the dosument with some minor tears and neat splits at the edges FR to VG, 2
RAINIER III: (1923-2005) Sovereign Prince of Monaco 1949-2005. A lengthy and revealing T.L.S., Rainier Pce. Monaco. with holograph salutation and subscription, five pages (separate leaves), 4to, n.p. (Monte Carlo?), 11th September 1968, to Marcel [Palmero], Consul General of Monaco, on the Prince´s blue monogrammed stationery, in both French and English (the latter with many grammatical and spelling mistakes, retained in the extracts that follow). Rainier writes an expansive letter in which he expresses his strong opinions regarding various aspects of life in Monaco, as well as the behaviour of Wilfred Groote, an adviser to Prince Rainier and a key figure related to the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM), commencing in French and explaining that it is essential for Rainier to meet Palmero in order to talk about business and the SBM and take stock of the situation, ´La situation actuelle, ne peut et ne doit durer. Groote semble refuser tout conseil ou avis, se croyant avoir la science infuse´ (Translation: ´The current situation cannot and must not continue. I am in the habit of being very frank with you.... and this is how our relationship always remains confident and solid. I would ask you to treat what I write to you as completely confidential. It must remain between us, of course. Mainly, it concerns Groote.....this boy really does now seem to have a curious conception of his position, and his management methods seem to me to be very unpsychological, and in the field of human relations he seems to be devoid of any sensitivity. His way of doing things has alienated everyone much more than the measures or decisions imposed by the need for management reform, which I am the first to want and approve. The only problem is that mistakes have been made, and these mistakes run counter to what I so fervently want to see: a return to running the company and its businesses. Groote seems to refuse any advice or opinion, believing himself to be an expert´), continuing to express his views on how just one managing director should operate within the SBM andd that he should have a buffer man ´who sees to the details and follows through avoiding thus that the director general be on the front line, this I told Groote many months ago, telling him that he could obtain a lot if he went the right way with the personel..to crack the whip; is fine...but not on peoples backbone! I think, that more than ever, you yourself must change, when you are here, the structure of the management keep Groote who is certainly a man of great value, but put him in a position of directeur general technique.....but for the daily routine and the general management, you should promote some good man......Un bon executant qui a une certaine lattitude de decision, un certain pouvoir de prendre certaines decisions dans le management general de la societe, dans l´exploitation des divers etablissements (Translation: ´A good performer who has a degree of decision-making latitude, a certain power to take certain decisions in the general management of the company, in the operation of the various establishments´).....there seems to me that Groote has become to big for his shoes, in his own opinion of himself...and thus he does not accept, advice or even requests, that even I put to him! When he asks to be received by me, I always do, but nothing really comes out of our talk and I consider now that it is a pure loss of time for me to discuss with him...he has pre set ideas, and opinions that he is not ready to abandon!´. The Prince continues his letter making reference to other individuals and organisations within Monaco, including the Sea Club, ´It is too big! The P[rin]c[e]ss and myself went there the other night, and by night things appear more shocking to the eye. First it is not intimate...it is cold and very drafty..and above all the same monumental mistake, of the old summer sporting club, has been repeated..people sit with there back to the sea!!! facing naturally the band stand. Many points that I thought I had made clear to you and to Groote have not been taken at all into consideration! My opinions, advice and, above all, my requests and demands are lost, so why should I make them? I wanted this establishment to have a real new personality focused on younger customers, with appropriate prices. I recommended that the orchestras, the attractions, and even the type of food, should not be the same as those offered at the Sporting. There is no need to rotate the orchestras throughout the night...and to pass on the Sporting's attractions...this is a privilege of this establishment...A small and very modern orchestra should suffice...The whole of the Sea Club should function day and night. .swimming pool, baths snack etc, it's not a night club...´OWING TO LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY THE SALEROOM, THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOR THIS LOT CAN NOT DE DISPLAYED. A toi il n´etait arrive que la mort´ (Translation: ´You were still a good six years old and I was moving further and further into the world, with - I would find the definition in a poem by Eluard when I was twenty - my "dur desir de durer". The canvas is a little slack. There is a slight raised distortion to the canvas visible at the face, likely caused by a blow from the reverse. This curves down through the lower half of the painting approx. 1cm inside stretcher bar. There is associated cracking, and a few tiny lifting flakes and tiny losses of paint and ground (unrestored). There is further small areas of secure brittleage and impact cracking, and one futher elevated flake of paint in the bottom of one of the primrose petals (see images in normal and raking light). One small area of drying cracks showing white underlayer top right quadrant.A few very minor scuffs at the rebate and a line of gold from the frame bottom edge. An even varnish layer not appreciably yellowed, and a thick layer of surface dirt/dust. No overpaint apparent.
A PAIR OF GERMAN FORGED IRON OR STEEL MIRRORS PROBABLY AUGSBERG OR NURENBURG, PROBABLY 17TH CENTURY The pierced scrolling frames surmounted by mermaids with cherub masks to the side and base, the mirror plates later, probably originally picture frames, possibly previously decorated 132cm high, 97cm wide, 5cm deep SALEROOM NOTICE: Please note the catalogue text for this has now been updated. The correct text is as per our website and not as shown in the printed catalogue Provenance: One from: Alessandro Cesati, Milan, where purchased by Count Manfredi della Gherardesca The second from: Hampel Kunstauktionen, Germany, where purchased by Count Manfredi della Gherardesca This unusual pair of German mirrors is an interpretation of the Baroque style of the 17th century. Mermaids were a fashionable decorative motif in the 17th century appearing as carving on tables, bed and mirror frames, here the mermaids were probably inspired by a sketch by Albrecht Durer (1471-1528), Das Lüsterweibchen (1513, Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna, illustrated in H. Kreisel, Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1968, vol. I, fig. 356). In the 17th century, German craftsmen used a variety of materials to produce highly decorative frames for mirrors with particular regions famed for their use of specific materials such as Augsburg (metalwares including gold and silver), Dresden (amber) and Munich (ivory), while in Flanders, gilt metal frames pierced with scrolls, fruit and flowers were fashionable in the 1650s. However, until at least the 19th century it was relatively rare for furniture to be made entirely of iron or steel, an exception being secure chests or strong boxes made of iron or steel such as a 17th century German 'Armada' chest with mermaids, sold Galerie Zacke, Vienna, 10 November 2018, lot 28, and door furniture like locks, handles and hinges. A seemingly unique comparison is a 16th century iron frame in the MAK, Vienna (EI 269). Condition Report: Both mirrors structurally sound and ready to use. The front surface of the iron has been treated with a polish. There is some inevitable wear to the iron and some minor holes. The reverse side of the mirrors are rusty. One plate has more mercury disintegration than the other. The mirror plates are not original. Condition Report Disclaimer
