Lot 125

Offered for public sale is a rare and important pipe tomahawk attributed to the Sioux Ghost Dance of 1890 of the Eastern Santee Sioux and formerly owned by a Cheyenne, Little Bear. Provenance: The piece was originally collected by Dr. Charles Eastman who acquired the tomahawk from Little Bear of the Cheyenne Indians at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation sometime near the turn of the century. Dr. Eastman donated the weapon to Father Joseph Ward’s Yankton Indian College Museum where it remained on display until the museum closed in 1984. During the museum deaccession the contents were purchased by Piedmont, South Dakota artifact dealer Jim Aplan. Aplan sold the tomahawk later to Cyrus Eaton of London, England in 1985. The tomahawk features a hand-forged iron head with tall bowl, forged moldings and chevrons with filed lines and a large long tapering blade that exhibits a rare four-point morning star cut out surrounded by four circular full moon piecing’s. This style of morning star and the cutouts exhibited on this piece have been documented as known Ghost Dance symbols. The pipe axe head shows a diamond shaped eyelet or eye hole and is paired with an ash wood haft handle with extensive hot file brandings and brass trade tack bands. The head is secured to the haft with an old thick buckskin gasket. Just below the gripping area of the tomahawk shows a spurred out pierced section holding a drop tied with Indian tanned hide lacing and is comprised of a strip of brain-tanned Buffalo hide with typical Sioux beaded geometric patterns in glass trade seed beads also exhibiting long hand cut fringe, two strands of wound glass large sky padre blue padre or pony beads with rolled tin jingle cones at the end with fringe and two strips of old red and green trade cloth tied on. The tomahawk has a nice mellow patina with expected minor wear from age and use. The piece is of a larger size of other similar third quarter-19th-century pieces. Previous collectors presumed that Little Bear already had the tomahawk which was thought to date to the Indian Wars era and contracted the blacksmith to apply the cutout symbols to the blade to use in ceremonial dance, this is of course a theory. This style of morning star with four pieced holes has not been seen on a tomahawk such as this making this a unique Ghost Dance example with nice collection history. Provenance recap: Owned by Little Bear Cheyenne Indian and is of Eastern Santee Sioux origin, ex-collection of Reverend Joseph Ward, ex-collection of the Yankton Indian College Museum from its nearly 70-80 year collection, ex-collection Dr. Charles Eastman, ex-collection of Jim Aplan of Piedmont, South Dakota, ex-collection of Cyrus Eaton of London, England. Published in the 2020 book "Rare American Indian Weapons Volume 2" by Mark Francis on page 95. The head measures 12 ½ inches long by 4 ¼ inches wide across the bottom of the blade. The tomahawk overall is 24 inches in length

Lot 82

Offered for sale in this lot is an outstanding third-quarter 19th Century Lakota Sioux Native American Indian beaded pipe bag. The bag is constructed of Indian brain tanned Buffalo Bison hide and is sinew sewn accented by extraordinary beadwork on both sides. The beadwork is all 1800’s period correct glass trade seed cen beads in a geometric pattern showing a nice rectangular section at the base wrapping around both sides with a single band vertically attaching the fancy beaded top edge. The beadwork is in colors of greasy yellow, sky padre blue, cobalt, greasy rose and greasy blue. Each side shows a five-point star in greasy rose along with various rolled tin jingle cones. The original hide tie straps are still intact at the top and the bag shows expected wear from age and use withs some drying of the hide and fringe, but overall a nice supple condition with little to no bead loss. This iconic pattern of pipe tobacco bag predates the more often seen “beaded on one side with quillwork and fringe at the bottom” examples that were made during the early reservation period. The circa 1860’s pipe bag shows traces of old yellow ocher mineral pigment on the bag and fringe. The base of the bag shows long hand cut frilly hide fringe with nice patina and staining from honest age and use. The five-pointed red morning star has been documented by scholars as being a Sioux “Warrior Society” symbol. Provenance: The pipe bag was acquired by noted Indian artifact dealer Jim Aplan of Piedmont, South Dakota in the 1960’s directly off the Pine Ridge Sioux Indian Reservation. Aplan later sold the bag to Mitchell Hodgkins of Rapid City, South Dakota who later sold the piece to wealthy London, England collector Cyrus Eaton back in the 1980’s. This is truly a fantastic rare authentic example shows fine beadwork, very early age and wonderful patina with amazing owner lineage. The pipe bag measures 29 inches long including the fringe by 5 inches wide.

African art Standing figure, LegaD.R. Congo. . Cm 14,50. A rare carved ivory masango figure .This type of Lega ivory sculptures are very rare, especially those made in the so-called “round head” style like this one, characterized by the energetic volumetry of the different anatomical parts. These stauettes, invested with important magical values within the Bwami society, are often the subject of showy manipulations that can lead to real scrapings of conspicuous parts of the artifact to obtain medical powders to mix with filters or medicines (Daniel Biebuyck). According to this reading it is possible that even in this piece the left side of the body has been object of such practices. For comparative examples see Sothebys NYC, 11 May 2012, lot n ° 201, or Sothebys Paris, 02 December 2015, lot n ° 19Provenance: Italian private collection and previously from the collection of a well-known French industrialist who - according to what he stated, had come to him by donation from the great explorer Luigi Amedeo di Savoia-Aosta (1873-1933) who had collected them in situ at the end of the '20s.

A striking red background is accent by green and other naturalistic colors, with four stylized arrow fletching symbolizing the four winds blowing them away. In Navajo art, the Whirling or Falling Logs were associated with the four directions and the four winds.
