ATTRIBUTED TO CHRISTOPHER DRESSER (1834-1904) RARE AESTHETIC MOVEMENT PITCHER, 1881 silver, engraved with initials under base E.C.S., stamped maker's mark for William Hunter & Son, London, hallmarked London 1881 24cm high Literature: Rudoe J. Decorative Arts 1850-1950; A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection, British Museum Press 1991, p. 42 and p. 183 (illus.)British Museum Collection. no. 1983,1010.1London, The Fine Art Society, Truth Beauty Power: The Designs of Christopher Dresser: The John Scott Collection, exhibition catalogue, p. 66, no. 126, where an Ault Pottery vase of the same design is illustrated.Whiteway, M. Christopher Dresser 1834-1904, Skira 2001, p. 110, pl. 101Note: This silver pitcher is derived from designs created by Christopher Dresser during his tenure as 'Art Superintendent' at Linthorpe Art Pottery. Known for their bold forms and rich glazes, Dresser’s designs for Linthorpe, where he served as director from 1879 to 1882, are highly distinctive. The shape of the current piece is likely influenced by Minoan or Cycladic pottery, which were frequent sources of inspiration for Dresser's work at Linthorpe and later at Ault Pottery. His designs also drew on a wide range of cultural motifs, including Asian, Mexican, Peruvian, Fijian pottery, and prehistoric artifacts discovered in Yorkshire. This reflects Dresser's broader interest in integrating diverse cultural elements into his work.A related silver artifact based on one of Dresser's designs for Linthorpe is held in the British Museum Collection. Produced in 1881, this tray or figural dish was featured in advertisements for Linthorpe Pottery in the Furniture Gazette in May 1880. The tray is shaped like a Fijian drinking vessel, with a head modelled directly from a Japanese stoneware figure of the monk-poet Saigyō—both of these items are part of the British Museum Collection (museum numbers Franks 1838 and 1842. 12-10.127). A rare silver version of the tray was produced by Thomas Johnson, a London firm known for manufacturing traditional small wares, similar to the work of William Hunter & Son, London, who made the present lot. It remains uncertain whether other Dresser designs were also produced in silver during this period, suggesting that these rare pieces may have been specially commissioned.

[Collins, Michael] A lock of hair, said to be from Michael Collins, taped on a card with harp and ‘Erin Go Bragh’ device, inscribed rear, O’Connor, Clerk of Works, 1925.  (1) Provenance:  This truly unique artifact was given after Collins death on 22 August, 1922 to his friend, Felix Cronin. Cronin was, 3 years later, to marry Kitty Kiernan, Collins fiancé at the time of his death. Cronin who was a veteran of the Irish War of Independence and Irish Civil War who served as quarter master General of the Irish Free State army in the 1920s. The couple had two sons, Felix jnr, who died in 2000, and Michael Collins Cronin, who died in 2021. Cronin was a dashingly handsome ex IRA man. Hearing anecdotes about his hunger strike, or the way he'd borrow a dress suit and gate crash a landlord's ball and dance with the most beautiful women there, you can see why Kitty might have liked him. Ostensibly, she played the role of wife: and mother in the Irish Free State - with style and conviction. But her family was not fooled. "My mother was cut out for something different," said her son Michael many years later. "She found it difficult to settle into her life as a housewife - she knuckled down and did it, but it was a chore." Kitty had been raised to think of herself as special. Her family was part of the new Catholic bourgeoisie which was a rising force in late 19th century Ireland. The Kiernans ran various business concerns, centred around their hotel, the Greville Arms Hotel, Granard, Co. Longford. But despite their prosperity, the Kiernans suffered great personal tragedy, with both parents and Kitty's twin sisters dying within two years of each other while Kitty was still a teenager. Loss was to become a theme of her life. Kitty's charisma was recognised at Saint Ita's, the innovative school for girls founded by Patrick Pearse as a partner to his boys' school, Saint Enda's. Kitty was School Captain, the Saint Ita's equivalent of head girl.

This wreath was a message from Napoleon's supporters in London, Elizabeth and Henry Holland. They led the opposition to the Emperor's imprisonment on St. Helena. Lady Holland, sent him these plants from England to soften his imprisonment and remind him of his native Corsica. These flowers symbolize charity, generosity and delicacy. A wreath of dried immortelle flowers lay on the floor on the day Napoleon Bonoparte died on May 5, 1821. This object has a high antique value as it was a symbol and testimony of the last days of the great Emperor, his imprisonment and seclusion. At antique shows to see this artifact is extremely rare, if not exceptional event. After the Emperor's death, the wreath was given to his inner circle of generals as a precious memento. In 1836, this wreath was presented to Morecbal Bertrand during his visit to Bordeaux. A letter enclosed with the wreath characterizes its value as an object of remembrance of the Great Man's most loyal friend. For collectors and connoisseurs of antiques this artifact is of special interest, being directly related to Napoleon and his last years of life on the island conveying in itself a special energy and importance in history.

The Antarctic Letters, written from the British Antarctic expedition of 1901-1904 Reginald Koettlitz (1860-1916) Letter 4 (postcard)27th February 1903To: Mrs Waymouth, Karewa From Reginald KoettlitzWritten from: ‘Discovery’ Winter quarters, Victoria Land, AntarcticaA photographic postcard: ‘Mount Erebus, from summit of Harbour Hill, October 1902’“Fairly unique, being the first card of the kind ever sent from so far south and so remote a part of the world” Note: This photograph is a particularly rare and interesting polar artifact, as Koettlitz's contribution to the expedition was downplayed by Scott upon their return. None of Koettlitz's research featured in the expedition’s final scientific reports and his photographs, including his groundbreaking colour images, were ignored and have since been lost to science. Biographical note: Reginald Koettlitz was born on 23 December 1861. Of German extraction, he trained at Guy's Hospital and went into practice as a physician in Dover. In 1894 he volunteered as surgeon for the 1894-1897 Jackson-Harmsworth Arctic Expedition to Franz Josef Land and spent nearly three years in the Arctic Circle. He learned valuable lessons in Arctic survival, undertook dog sledging expeditions and kept the party free of scurvy. The British expedition also met the Norwegian North Polar Expedition, 1893-1896, led by Fridtjof Nansen who became a lifelong friend to Koettlitz. In 1900 he travelled to Somaliland and Abyssinia with Herbert Weld Blundell. He also journeyed to the Amazon. His polar experience gained him a place on the 1901 British Antarctic Expedition, where he doubled the role of senior surgeon with that of botanist. His assistant was E.A. Wilson, later surgeon on Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition. At 41, he was one of the oldest men in the expedition and had the most polar experience, however he and Scott clashed and his scientific contributions to the Discovery Expedition were not recognized on their return. Koettlitz’s position wasn’t recognised in Scott’s book ‘The Voyage of the Discovery’ and none of his painstaking work featured in the expedition’s final scientific reports. Even a report to the British Medical Journal was presented by Koettlitz’s deputy, Wilson. Also, groundbreaking colour photographs taken by Koettlitz, the first ever taken in the Antarctic, seem to have been ignored, and they have now been lost to history. He took part in several sledging expeditions, including an attempt on Cape Crozier in March 1902. On a trip he led across McMurdo Sound, Koettlitz discovered two glacial features later named after him: the Koettlitz Glacier and the Koettlitz Neve. Other than the honour of these names, his important role has been rather airbrushed from history. After the expedition he returned to his practice in Dover but in 1911 emigrated to South Africa and continued to practice medicine. He and his wife died of dysentery on the same day in 1916. From the estate of the Lamorna artist Eleanor Hughes, née Waymouth, thence by descent.Mr & Mrs. Frederick Waymouth and their family lived in Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand, in their grand home 'Karewa' now known as 'Mona Vale,' an important historic homestead. Mr Waymouth, a successful businessman, was the managing director of Canterbury Frozen Meats, and with his wife Alice, were prominent members of Christchurch society. The 'Discovery' docked in Lyttelton, the port for Christchurch, on 29th November 1901. The Waymouth family entertained members of the expedition in their beautiful home 'Karewa' and Frederick Waymouth also provisioned them with supplies. On December 21st, after a three-week stay in New Zealand, the 'Discovery' set sail and headed south for Antarctica. The correspondence that followed their visit is a testament of affection towards Alice Waymouth, and the warmth and hospitality she showed them is gratefully reflected back in the light-hearted conversational nature of these letters even when discussing the hardships of extreme cold and being locked long-term within the ice pack.In the introduction to his account of the 1901 expedition ‘The Voyage of the Discovery’ Robert F Scott writes about the kindness his team received from the people of New Zealand. He goes on to list nine men who provided particular assistance and this includes Frederick Waymouth.“In considering such general kindness it is almost invidious to mention particular names, but the following gentlemen are among those who must be especially remembered by us for the manner in which they were ever ready to assist us: His Excellency the Governor Lord Ranfurly, the Premier Mr Sedden, the Hon. C C Bowen, Captain Hutton of the Christchurch Museum, Mr Kinsey, Mr Waymouth, Mr A Rhodes, Mr Coleridge Farr of the Christchurch Observatory and Mr H J Miller of Lyttelton.”Further information in our blog
