Fine and Important Set of Union Pipes by Timothy Kenna Dublin circa 1800 clearly stamped Kenna Dublin with the device of a shamrock in six places of boxwood with turned ivory and brass mounts throughout the keyless chanter with seven fingerholes and one thumbhole single regulator with four brass keys with square covers four drones the bass drone incorporating a brass U-bend original and later leather bags a fragment of the original bellows remaining the bass drone repaired but generally in very fine condition chanter length from stock 13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.); regulator length from stock 9 1/2 in. (24.1 cm.) * There is disagreement about Kenna's dates. Langwill's 6th edition of his Index of Musical Wind Instrument Makers records the earliest date connected with Kenna as 1817. However Baines in Bagpipes refers to the family as instrument makers from 1768. In this case the presence of only one regulator implies a date earlier than 1800. Baines would have called this set Hybrid Union Pipes which are normally associated with Scotland. However this terminology has largely been discredited in the light of recent work by Sean Donnelly - the Sean Reid Society Journal 2002. However there is more which makes this set unusual. The form of the chanter is similar to that in the example in the Pitt Rivers collection earlier recorded by Balfour in the Journal of the Anthropological Institute London 1890. That anonymous example like this has only a single four-keyed chanter but in this set by Kenna the drone stock has no fewer than seven sockets: the regulator three straight drones and the three tubes of the folded bass drone. Four drones instead of three is unusual. It could be that a drone has been substituted for a regulator at some stage although there is no good reason to believe it: stylistically all the drones are en suite . It should be noted that the chanter possibly lacks a foot joint and the lower mount terminates in what appears to be an ivory tenon.
