[AUSTRALIA]: A small selection of engaging letters from British Missionary John Greenwood which give a fascinating insight into life during mid-19th century Tasmania. Three A.Ls.S., John Greenwood, 8vo, Hobart Town, Tasmania, to 'Cristian Friends'. Including, four pages, 22nd November 1860, '…we landed at port… in the bay Melborn (sic) a pleasant place… the streets are wide and straight for half a mile or more… and they cross at right angle with narrow streets in these squares. And in the wide streets the cab men stand waiting to carry passengers… the foot passage is… 3 feet wide… with large stone all swept clean with water… there is a tap and a little pan chained and if you were thirsty you can stop to drink. We are living on the road from Hobart Town to Lanserton… and the stage runs… every day, and the telegraf wire by the same route… There are some English families near us Irish and Scottish. We have a griss mill close by us which runs by wind… Hobart Town water is very scarce in this part of the island… but the houses have… troughs and large tubs to catch rain water… Garden vegetables appear to grow very fast and some that we have not seen since we left England before. This is the most hilly country we have ever seen in America or England.' And four pages, 22nd October 1861, '…We had a good rain that freshened up the grass and the grain but… I do not expect to see such crops of grain rais'd again from the way they work the land. They cut no grass to make hay for cows and horses but plows the ground and sow wild oats barley tars… mix'd all together and when ready they cut it and let it dry and then stack it all call it hay…' And six pages, 20th June 1862, '…the land here is… too much clay and sandy and dug… plown to death year after year for 10 or 12 or more so that it bears very little but sorrel and thisels and other weeds. And… there is a great many frosty mornings that hurts potato… and tender plants… And the butter is all in half pouns kept up in a square of white cotton cloth dipt in cold water… There is no Baptist place that I can go, there is a Congregational Church… they have a musical instrument but it is so strong and rough that the music is lost in my view…' Together with three autograph manuscripts, n.p., n.d., one in which Greenwood states of cattle, 'There is no stables for them they are out all winter and at Melborn where we landed and never saw poorer looking cattle in my life, but there were very good horses, heavier than the American horses…' and in another, 'We have more thieves and drunkards than you have, but this is nothing to be proud of…' With age related wear, minor creases and some small tears, otherwise G to VG, 6

1934 MORRIS "SPECIAL TEN-SIX"- 4-SEATER OPEN SPORTS-TOURER COACHWORK Chassis No: 35/TS/SP36676 Engine No: 4228 Registration No: ABP 460 Date of first registration: 18TH September 1934 Specification: 1,378cc 6-cylinders in-line pushrod overhead-valve 10HP-rated motor, twin-carburettor with four-speed gearbox, four-wheel mechanical brakes, live rear-axle with semi-elliptic spring suspension all round. Colour scheme: Red with black wings and matching red leather interior. History: By the early 1930s the well-tried trusted and proven range of Morris Cars primarily based on their reliable side-valve engined types proved the need for a more modern approach in-line with developments in the industry. The range of cars introduced in late 1933 and early 1934 saw a new premise for the more discerning motorist, with a more sporting outlook in both design and performance. The new "Ten-Six" overhead-valve motor would become the basis for a range of more sporting machines with bespoke coachwork options in open & closed formats and two and four-seater variants. Type MT12. Car No. 35/TS/SP 36676. Engine No. 4228. Sadly, for all that the car represents, both a rarity and excellent state of preservation and appearance, the history file is very thin with no previous ownership evidence seemingly available prior to 1978. However, a there is evidence of a complete engine rebuild carried out in c2013, and from all appearances it would seem that much of the rest of the car was at some time completely refurbished to a high standard. The open touring coachwork shows a very sporting appearance with heavily louvred bonnet & side valances, wind-deflecting double-raised scuttle and low fold-flat windscreen, whilst the dashboard layout has a well-defined plated instrument panel with large combination tacho/speedometer and full range of clock & dial-gauges, complemented with a racing-style "Ashby"-pattern 4-spoke steering-wheel and two-eared dummy knock-off hubcap covers to Magna-pattern wire-spoked wheels, and further with fitted stone-guards to the imposing headlamps and matching heavily-chromed bright-work. The "Morris Special" ethos is entailed in the polished alloy rocker-cover and unique enamel circular badge to the spare-wheel cover with "MS" logo motif. Condition: The vehicle appears in excellent restored condition: red paintwork with contrasting black wings and red leather interior trim and black double-duck canvas hood. An extremely rare model of a very limited production run of this particular type: the fore-runner of the later VA & WA tourers of the later 1930s. Very well maintained in original specification condition. There are no old-style logbooks, but a current V5C & older V5 document is present in the file, which shows the late owner to have been registered keeper of this car since 1993, and one prior owner dating back to 1978

Lot 123

small replica cricket bat; leather attache case monogrammed with " D H ", leather and wood wind instrument case.

Lot 124

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Nariño, ca. 1250 CE. Beautiful and musical too, a Nariño pottery flute of a shape akin to an abstract seashell form, decorated with bichrome red and cream negative resist, a Nariño signature technique, featuring an abstract rendering of a fox in composite profile on the body and an eight-pointed star on the circular terminus. Four blow/finger holes for creating sweet, dulcet sounds - two perforations through one end for suspension as well. A fabulous Pre-Columbian wind musical instrument! Size: 6.25" L x 2.625" W (15.9 cm x 6.7 cm) Provenance: Ex-Private Smith collection, Atlanta, GA Condition: Old losses to flat terminus. Minor surface scratches. Flute works beautifully. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Lot 177B

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 100 BCE. A fascinating figural polychrome sculpture depicting a musician seated on a round base displaying several intriguing features. First, the figure is either wearing an antler-headdress or his/her head is morphing into that of a deer. Second, the figure has a curved cylindrical form emerging from its abdominal region and connecting to the round base; this may be interpreted as either an umbilical cord or a phallus. Size: 2" L x 3.95" W x 4.55" H (5.1 cm x 10 cm x 11.6 cm)The figure's head is a rich red; he/she wears matching conical earrings, and presents an expressive visage as he/she holds a white-painted horn/wind instrument with a flared end to his/her lips, seeming to play with abandon. How to interpret this figure? The antler headdress or half-human/half-animal shape of the head suggests a shaman; if the cylinder is a phallus, then that is often linked in Mesoamerican artwork to a state of religious ecstasy brought on by the use of drugs. Deer hunting is often associated with marriage, and deer symbolism also has a sexual connotation in Mesoamerica. Of course without a record from the sculptor of this piece, it is very difficult to definitively interpret this ancient sculpture. What do you think? Provenance: Ex-Triffo Collection, acquired in the 1970s Condition: The left side (facing) of the head has been repaired and repainted. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #119631

The present magnificent Art Deco instrument is one of the total of 261 that the company built at its workshops in Chiswick and subsequently at a purpose-built factory at North Acton, London. They were installed in cinemas and theatres throughout the British Isles. In the 1930s the cost was approximately £3,000, representing a major investment but one which was regarded as essential in the era of the silent films where it replaced an orchestra in the pit. It also continued to play an important role with the advent of the talkies where the organist entertained the audience between features. ++This organ was acquired by the father of the present vendor and has been stored for 40 years in a dry barn. Whilst we make no warranty as to its completeness there are several thousand components and although dusty these appear to be in reasonably good condition. Many of the smaller pieces have been left undisturbed, stacked in six wooden crates and still wrapped in newspaper printed in 1972. Some of the decorative glass is missing or damaged and the gold painted console has been affected by woodworm whilst in storage. The purchaser will be required to remove the lot within 14 days of the Sale.

She was built at Chiswick in 1894 and was sold in 1911. The patent refers to E. Emanuel's patent of 11 April 1896. Its distinctive shape has remained practically unchanged from medieval times to the present day.
