Four novelty late 19th / early 20th century ceramic tobacco jars, two of barrel shape with removable figural head covers, each approx. 17.5cm high, another depicting a sailor wearing hat titled "H.M.S. Nelson", approx. 15.5cm high, and the other of a man in fez hat, approx. 15cm high. (4) Condition: older gentleman barrel shaped example with restoration and damage; man in fez hat and HMS Nelson examples with damage to lids, chips and nibbles; all with loss to paint, wear commensurate with age.
Five novelty late 19th or 20th century ceramic tobacco jars to include; two depicting females in head scarfs (one missing lid); a young man in blue bowtie (missing lid); a bearded gentleman in a turban terracotta example (no lid), and a three faced example of an owl, cat and dog (no lid), tallest with lid approx. 14cm high, together with an African lady depicted wall pocket. (6) Condition: chips to base of terracotta man in turban example; wall pocket with cracks and crazing; gentleman head with bow tie cracked and with damage; some loss to paint, chips to areas to exterior of some; wear commensurate with age.
A novelty barrel shaped ceramic tobacco jar with gentleman in top hat top, approx. 28cm high; a novelty figural ceramic tobacco jar and cover depicted as a female, her head and shoulders removable and the fruit she is holding formed as a seperate jar and cover, approx. 27cm high, along with a smaller barrel shaped tobacco jar, Austrian made stamp to base, formed as a female in a head scarf, approx. 14.5cm high. (3) Condition: nibbles and chips to smallest female form example; loss to paint, nibbles and wear to larger barrel shaped example and some loss, chips and nibbles to other and restoration to ladies hat, wear and paint loss commensurate with age.
A collection of novelty early to mid 20th century items to include; a Golly money box; a tobacco jar modelled as a head with removable cover; a babies doll's head; another head with hollow inside area and a painted cast iron smaller female figure, (5) soem with paint loss and wear. These items are listed on the basis they are illustrative of a bygone culture in which there were different social norms. We understand the potential controversy surrounding this type of item but believe that providing transparent information about historical context fosters greater understanding of our complex cultural history.

Die hellfarbigen Zitronen, die tönerne Glutschale und die Meerschaumpfeife treten leuchtend aus dem dunklen Grund auf. Die Gläser, um die sich ein Weinlaub-Zweig schlingt, treten im Dunkel des Hintergrundes zurück, was der Gesamterscheinung des Bildes einen geheimnisvollen Charakter verleiht. Der Glanz von Glas und Metallplatte in meisterlicher Malerei. Von besonderem Interesse ist das Tabak-Wickelpapier links im Bild, auf dem fein geschriebener Text zu erkennen ist „R ./ Taback / I. / H.“ (Schriftbild vergleichbar mit einem Brief von Craen an Constantijn Huygens 1648, Kgl. Bibliothek, KA 42 aa, nr. 95). Das bekannte Oevre des Malers ist nicht allzu groß. Nicolaas R. A. Vroom nannte 1980 lediglich sechs Gemälde (s. Lit.). Dagegen berichtet Sam Segal von etwa zwanzig Bildern. Laurens Craen ist für 1649 in Middelburg tätig nachgewiesen, wo er für den Hof in Den Haag wirkte. Sein Frühwerk ab der 1540-er Jahre zeigt den Einfluss von Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1984). Of particular interest is the tobacco wrapping paper on the left of the painting, on which the finely written text “R ./ Taback / I. / H.” can be seen (typeface comparable to a letter from Craen to Constantijn Huygens 1648, Royal Library, KA 42 aa, no. 95). Two Cambodian silver betel nut boxes, modelled as a turtle and an elephant, the turtle with cross-hatched carapace, the elephant with long tusks and trunk raised, a Chinese white metal hexagonal small box with hinged lid, repoussé decorated with dragon, phoenix and other creatures and symbols, and two Peruvian silver ash trays, each inset with a five peso piece dated 1889 and 1916. (5) £140-£160 --- Betel nut boxes were used to store the areca nut (sometimes known as the betel nut) which would be wrapped in a betel leaf with lime paste and other ingredients, often tobacco, for chewing. Condition Report Elephant: stamped *30 Turtle: two-character native mark and .90 Both in good condition Box: height 4cm, diameter 5cm, good condition. Ashtrays: one slightly mis-shapen, 1889 peso with light wear, 1916 with a slightly more wear.
A 17TH CENTURY BRONZE TOBACCO BOX. With a deep geometric line design to the lid consisting of banded lines with arches, swirls and rectangles, opening to reveal a gilt interior, 7cm wide, 6cm deep, 20cm high. *CR Overall nice condition, the pin has moved a little but still snaps closed well, some corrosion bubbles to the base, an unusual well engineered piece.
