Lot 645

Serial Number One of 25, offered directly from its first and only owner with just 121 miles from new. A modern interpretation of an icon by Prodrive - reimagined, redefined and recreated to deliver the ultimate competition car for the road.  In 1997, Prodrive debuted the two-door Subaru Impreza WRC 'Group A' car and won the FIA World Rally Championship Manufacturer’s Title in its inaugural season. The WRC97, as it was known, thrilled motorsport fans the world over and gave birth to much celebrated road-going versions. 25 years after the introduction of the WRC97, the Prodrive P25 was launched, a modern interpretation of the rally icon reimagined, redefined and recreated using its DNA to deliver the ultimate competition car for the road.Peter Stevens, who designed the original Impreza WRC in 1997, restyled a number of features for the P25 and working alongside the Prodrive Engineering Team, the modern version is aligned with the heart and spirit of the original rally contender. The technical focus was on making the P25 lighter, more powerful and with even better handling than its 1990s sibling and as a result, the Prodrive P25 is, quite simply, the best road-going Subaru Impreza ever built. The specification is truly impressive, with the P25 being based on the lightweight bodyshell of the Subaru Impreza WRX STi and then comprehensively re-engineered to cutting-edge motorsport standards by Prodrive’s world renowned engineers and technicians. The engine is a heavily reworked version of Subaru's long-serving EJ25 turbocharged 2.5-litre flat-four now boasting forged pistons, stronger connecting rods, ported cylinder heads and a new Garrett turbo resulting in an impressive 440bhp at 6,000rpm and 457lb/ft from just 3,000rpm. Additional features include a competition anti-lag system (ALS) and rally start launch control along with an Akropovic titanium rear exhaust with silencer bypass system. It's mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox, plus an active electronically controlled centre differential that varies the amount of torque sent to each axle, upgraded driveshafts and prop shafts. Retardation is provided by AP Racing brakes sitting behind Prodrive GC-012L 8.5 x 19" wheel rims, wearing Bridgestone Potenza Sport 235/35 R 19 tyres all under carbon wheel arches that take their cue from the original WRC97. Handling benefits from an improved aero package and the front bumper and splitter reduce lift and improve cooling airflow, whilst the P25’s carbon rear wing, also based on the WRC97 design, provides impressive downforce. As the name implies, just 25 highly personalised examples left Prodrive over a two year period. Here at Iconic Auctioneers, we are extremely proud to offer the first ever Prodrive P25 to a physical auction anywhere in the world. Serial number 36A-001 is a right-hand drive example and is being offered directly by its first and only owner having covered just 121 miles since purchase. There are over £17,000 worth of 'options' for this particular P25, as detailed below:Sparco SPX trimmed seatsTwo 4-point harnesses (only available on SPX trimmed seat option & rear seat-delete option required)Rear seat-delete and roll cage installSpare wheel mounted in boot with quick jackPersonalised wheel colour option: *TOTAL 12 wheels, six gold wheels with tyres (delivered on gold), six Anthracite, just rims.Bespoke P25 car coverAn homage to the world's original affordable sports car and the heroic drivers who wrote them into motorsport folklore, the Prodrive P25 is not only an amazing car to drive in the real world, but it’s also a true collectors piece, much like the preceding 22B. Presenting as you would expect for a car that’s covered just over 120 miles since it left Prodrive, this really is an unrepeatable opportunity to join a rather exclusive and illustrious club. Lot 607

Well optioned, UK-supplied and classically finished in Guards Red with black leather. Supplied with book pack, receipted maintenance and a service book last stamped in 2024. One of the fastest production cars available at the time, the Porsche 930 Turbo was revered for its performance and reliability during the 1970s and by the 1980s it became one of the defining cars of the decade. It was first seen at the 1973 Paris Auto Show and full production commenced two years later. The basic engine underpinnings came from the Carrera 2.7 RS which was increased to 3-litres and of course turbocharged with technology gained from Porsche's 917/30 Can-Am program. The bodywork received special treatment resulting in one of the most aggressive looking Porsches ever made, with its wide arches and impressive rear whale tail and the brakes came directly from the Porsche 917 race car. Porsche made its first and most significant changes to the 930 for the 1978 model year, enlarging the engine bore by 2mm to a total displacement of 3,299cc (3.3-litre) and adding an air-to-air intercooler. The flat-six powertrain mated to a 4-speed manual transmission and boosted by a turbocharger complemented by the intercooler offered 300bhp and 304ft/lbs of torque.Performance was amazing for the era and the Turbo 3.3 can still keep up with modern sports cars when accelerating from a standstill, requiring 5.4 seconds for 0-60mph and a quarter-mile time of 14 seconds flat with a top speed of 160mph. The iconic side profile so redolent of its era came from the re-profiled whale tail spoiler which was raised slightly to make room for the intercooler and the look completed by its muscular haunches. This 930 Turbo is a UK-supplied (C16) example ordered through Porsche main agents, Parks of Exeter, in right-hand drive and classically finished in Guards Red with black leather. Options when new included Sport seats with electric height adjustment, sunroof and rear seat belts. The car is accompanied by its original book pack and invoices from the Classic Car Workshop within the car's history file detail recent attention including a reconditioned turbo and cylinder heads in 2020. The well stamped service book shows the most recent service was carried out by Statller Porsche Specialists of Sheffield, whose technicians had carried out the previous three services, on the 2nd May 2024 with less than 2,000 miles travelled since. At the time of cataloguing, the odometer was reading 60,227 miles. The car presents beautifully in gleaming Guards Red with a deep finish and good shut lines, the Fuchs alloys are correct and appear virtually unmarked wearing decent Pirelli P Zeros and the black leather interior remains standard, beautifully original and exactly what you might hope to find in a 911. With just over 60,000 miles and very sensibly guided, this 'poster perfect' 911 Turbo is worthy of your close inspection.Specification Make: PORSCHE Model: 911 Year: 1987 Chassis Number: WP0ZZZ93ZHS000517 Registration Number: D455 FYJ Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 67H00559 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 60227 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images

Lot 621

Simply astonishing Escort RS Turbo Series 1 in show-winning condition. The Escort RS Turbo Series 1 was specifically developed by Ford’s Special Vehicle Engineering team to set new standards in 'Group N' and 'Group A' motorsport events and was quickly dubbed 'the car to beat'. Ford initially planned to build 5,000 examples, the minimum number required for Homologation in 'Group A', however a total of 8,604 were built due to increased demand. The car was greeted with huge enthusiasm and was only sold through official Rallye Sport dealers. The much-revered Series 1 cars utilised a 1,600cc CVH unit modified to suit the higher loads and the application of a turbocharger. Computerised fuel-injection and state of the art engine management (in 1986) incorporating boost control resulted in a healthy 132bhp and offered reasonably lag-free acceleration with 0-62mph, taking 8.2 seconds on the way to 128mph. It was the first front-wheel drive road car in the world to use a compact viscous-coupling design LSD instead of a normal mechanical LSD, which greatly improved cornering and drivability.Aesthetically, the RS Turbo was given a distinctive sporty appearance with a body-coloured front grille, bumpers and aerodynamic aids. Unusually, there was only one choice of finish - Diamond White - and the purposeful interior was trimmed in a combination of Monza and Cashmere fabrics and Recaro LS bucket seats were fitted as standard. This remarkable example was supplied new by Haynes of Maidstone to its first lucky owner on  27th March 1986 and was enjoyed by a further three keepers until it was purchased by our vendor on 1st December 2020. He is a professional car body repairer and was impressed by the Ford's low mileage, originality and generally sound condition so decided to take some time off from working on customers' cars to work on his own. The RS was subject to a full nut and bolt restoration using old stock Ford NORS parts where possible and retaining all its original factory panels, stamp numbers and barcode plate still on the lower cross-member. The engine was completely rebuilt including a reground crank, new big ends and mains, re-bored block (+1mm), oversized forged pistons and new rods, skimmed head, new valves and seats, polished ports, new cam and followers, a new Garrett Turbo, new water and oil pumps and much more. There is an invoice within the file (£3,680.93) detailing the engine build and we understand that over £50,000 and hundreds of hours have been invested in the project. The car has only covered a handful of miles since the work was completed and consequently the engine will need to be run-in for 1,500 miles to ensure a long and happy life. Lots of photographs were taken during the process and some of those images are reproduced here to help you appreciate the fine level of detail.Over recent years here at Iconic Auctioneers, we have been asked to look after the sale of a good number of 'Performance Fords' that have been restored to a 'world class standard' (often with World Record results) and this Series 1 RS Turbo is certainly in that category. It's supplied with a Haynes Workshop Manual and a very well presented History File containing the original dealer book pack with the Service Record (six stamps up to 30,072 on 3rd November 1992 plus the engine rebuild at 36,521 miles), operating guides and manuals, HPI Check Summary, the V5C, the MOT history and the current one valid until 11th July 2025.We invite and encourage you to come along to Race Retro and view this stunning little RS Turbo in the metal to fully appreciate the quality on offer.Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT RS TURBO SERIES 1 Year: 1986 Chassis Number: WF0BXXGCABFK67637 Registration Number: C885 FKO Transmission: Manual Engine Number: FK67637 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 36525 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Grey Monza FabricClick here for more details and images

Lot 608

**Please note this vehicle is not single ownership as erroneously catalogued**One of just 25 UK-supplied, right-hand drive examples of Mercedes-Benz' much revered 507bhp 'super-coupé. Following on from the SLK55 AMG Black Series, Mercedes-Benz launched the CLK63 AMG Black Series - a limited edition coupé (only) model with just 700 examples produced worldwide between April 2007 and March 2008 - and a car that AMG says was largely inspired by the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. 'It 's pretty hardcore. We’ve got down to 7min 52sec on the Nürburgring….and that was in traffic. I don’t think we’ve ever done a more complete performance car' , says Tobias Moers, the man who oversees the engineering, development and testing of Mercedes-Benz’s AMG range. The CLK Black Series is based around the regular CLK63, but this is no ordinary AMG Mercedes as, although the two share the same driveline, the Black Series is a very different car. With a huge front spoiler designed to force cooling air into an enlarged radiator whilst also dialling out lift to make it more neutral at speed, the CLK Black Series instantly appears more menacing than the standard coupé. Bulging wheel arches incorporated into the body panels, air vents in the front wings, a deep rear valance and a carbon fibre rear spoiler complete the makeover. That and a set of 19" alloys weighing just 11kg each – 3kg lighter than those of the standard CLK63.Inside, the differences are also obvious, with carbon fibre-reinforced trim on the door inserts and centre console, a forged aluminium gear selector, a flat-bottomed wheel, expensive bucket seats and AMG also replaces the rear bench with two trimmed wells. The CLK Black Series utilises AMG's mighty (and largely hand-built) M156 V8, the brand's first entirely self-built engine launched in 2005 and undoubtedly one of the greatest production car V8s ever built. Power is up from the 478bhp of the standard CLK63 AMG to 507bhp at 6,800rpm, offering an impressive power-to-weight ratio of just over 300bhp per tonne whilst torque remains the same with 464lb/ft at 5,250rpm. Upgrades to the power unit include the adoption of a larger magnesium dual-intake manifold with two internal butterfly valves, a reworked, less restrictive exhaust system and remapped electronics resulting in a sound track that is rather addictive, described as a subdued rumble gradually building into a deep roar before erupting into an all-guns-blazing blare.Power is channelled through Mercedes’ SpeedShift 7G-Tronic gearbox (with Sport and Manual modes) but fettled by AMG for more efficient changes. It's considered a very versatile transmission, being able to swap-up smoothly under light loads but also extremely precise under hard acceleration through the wheel-mounted paddles. All the power is channelled through a suitably beefed-up drivetrain including a limited-slip differential with its own oil cooler and pump to keep temperatures in check. As those wheel arches suggest, there have been major revisions underneath, with the front track widened by 75mm and the rear by 66mm, bestowing the car with real race car agility – again, reinforced by the fitment of adjustable springs and shock absorbers that allow you to set your own compression and rebound rates. However, the CLK Black Series is also a compliant and usable road car (air-conditioning and cruise-control are still present) with AMG allowing enough suspension travel to ensure acceptable levels of comfort. The steering too is very well engineered, providing excellent feedback, whilst prodigious grip, helped no doubt by the huge 285/30 R19 Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, allows the car to carry big speeds into corners and then dispatch its power with real conviction. Meanwhile, the array of driver aids, including a specially calibrated ESP, are nowhere near as intrusive as in the standard CLK63 AMG, so lurid power slides are part of its repertoire, if that's on the agenda.Mercedes claims the 0-62mph time has dropped by 0.3 seconds to just 4.3 seconds, however the marque is notoriously conservative when it comes to quoting acceleration. Top speed is limited to 186mph - 'It is capable of more' says Moers. The car presented here is a 2007 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series and is one of just 25 UK-market/right-hand drive cars produced. It looks particularly striking in Black Metallic, apt for such a purposeful Black Series car, has covered 24,600 miles from new and benefits from a comprehensive service history, the most recent carried out at Sytner Mercedes-Benz of Bath in November 2024.On offer from a private Collection of special cars, it has been used sparingly but always meticulously stored and serviced. This is an opportunity not to be missed, as trying to find such a rare and revered car in right-hand drive, with such low mileage and diligent single ownership, is close to impossible.Arguably, the CLK63 AMG Black Series offers better value for money than other comparable limited edition Mercedes supercars of this era. As we know, cars like these, produced in short runs with bespoke large capacity and naturally-aspirated engines are less likely to be offered by manufacturers in the future and are destined to become even more collectable. The last word should really come from Jeremy Clarkson, a former owner of a CLK63 Black Series - 'For sheer excitement, the CLK Black is a match for absolutely anything. Since my test car went back to Mercedes, I have been thinking about it a lot. Because I’m not sure that anyone’s life is quite complete unless they have one'.SpecificationMake: MERCEDES-BENZModel: CLK63 AMG BLACK SERIESYear: 2007Chassis Number: WDB2093772F243015Registration Number: FG57 XVVTransmission: Semi-auto Engine Number: 15698260020175 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 24600 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black / AnthraciteClick here for more details and images

Lot 657

The perennially popular Mk1 Mexico, something of a cult car, here in striking Sebring Red and restored for an avid Blue Oval enthusiast. It seems likely that Ford already had plans to produce a high performance Escort to fit in the range between the 1300GT and the Twin-Cam/RS1600, but their victory in the World Cup Rally finishing in Mexico provided an ideal platform to launch such a model. The engineers at the newly formed AVO (Advanced Vehicles Operations) quickly developed the 'Mexico', marrying the Type 49 bodyshell, as used in the Twin-Cam and RS1600, with the 1,600cc Kent 'crossflow' engine and 2000E gearbox. So effectively, the Mexico was basically a re-engined Twin-Cam/RS1600. The Mexico became AVO's most successful and numerous of the Rally Sport Escorts and had a number of advantages on the road in that it had excellent performance, was easy to maintain, relatively easy to insure and above all, it was great to drive, something which is still true today. The car presented here is a 1974 Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico in 'oh-so-'70s' Sebring Red paintwork. This historic Fast Ford has the chassis number BFATPU00330, with the PU prefix confirming an AVO build date of June 1974. We are informed that the car still features its original Kent engine with number PU00330, adorned by its factory-spec airbox which is always a treat. The car was first registered on 4th October 1974, the delay between the two dates being attributed to the demand for the Mexico cooling-off once the RS2000 was launched in July 1973. With its seven former keepers no doubt having enjoyed the charms of this little Mexico between 1974 and 2009, its last owner acquired the Escort in October 2009. At this point, he embarked on a thorough professional restoration which was carefully documented, both with written notes and accompanying photographs. This diligent process resulted in the car we see offered here for sale, remaining in the same enthusiastic and knowledgeable ownership until only recently, when he sadly passed away. With only a nod to some personal touches, the clearer-to-see speedometer and period bullet-style wing mirrors, this Mexico still stands up very well and would be a pleasure to own for any aficionado of the Blue Oval. Iconic Auctioneers have sold similar era Mk1 RS2000s for in excess of £100,000, so this Mexico, with much money and time invested, offers a tempting opportunity to own one of Ford's most sought after classics.Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT MK1 MEXICO Year: 1974 Chassis Number: BFATPU00330 Registration Number: GKE 28N Transmission: Manual Engine Number: PU00330 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

One for the Blue Oval connoisseur, highly original, lots of provenance and a condition to warrant a place on the show field or in the concours arena. A Mk1 Mexico at its best. The car presented here is a UK-supplied 1972 Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico, correctly finished in Sunset Red with white stripes and currently owned by one of the foremost Ford collectors and experts in the UK. This is as good as you’d want any Mexico to be. Built in May 1972 at Ford’s AVO factory in Aveley, it was supplied by Ford Rallye Sport dealer, Broadspeed Ltd of Leamington Spa, to a Mr C.G. Blake at a total cost of £1,199 including seatbelts and Ziebart protection and first registered on 14th June 1972.With just four former keepers since, all of them Ford enthusiasts including the AVO Owners Club RS1600 Registrar, William Arnold, for 13 years, there is much provenance to back up its condition. An accompanying comprehensive history file contains two large booklets spanning the entire life of the car from the initial Order Form in 1972 through to the latest service using Ford Motocraft items in July 2024. There are also historic MOT Certificates, the original service book, maintenance invoices and many AVO Club Valuations, including an early one from Mexico Registrar, Andy Percival, for £2,750. Also present are many photos of the meticulous restoration carried out in the late 1990s, which is also magazine-featured and is a testament to how well the car presents today over two decades later. Such was the standard that, when completed in April 2000 and on the cars first outing to AVO National Day, it achieved a third in class and was invited onto the AVO Club Stand at the Classic & Sports Car NEC Show in November 2000.Resplendent in one of the three original launch colours, Sunset Red (Code J), this early production L-specification example retains all the correct period details (such as the rear stone deflector held in by eight bolts in the boot floor and strengthened AVO workmanship). Panel fit is excellent, many still protected by the Ziebart rust protection applied when new and the rear arches are correctly rolled. The lens units are FoMoCo and the front Carello headlamps are protected by clear dome covers. The contrasting Mexico stickers are in fantastic condition, promoting the iconic rally look, with all glass being the genuine Ford Triplex items including the front screen.Inside displays the correct Black PVC upholstery (Code AA), as fitted to ‘L’-specification early cars. The original black one-piece rubber floor mat is also present and in excellent condition. The boot area has the early Mexico’s battery-in-boot setup, meaning the spare wheel is mounted to the boot floor. The boot mat is original and incredibly, the rear cardboard boot spring protector is present along with black light protectors undamaged. The jack and wheel brace are within the original fawn muslin bag held down by the correct rubber band.Under the bonnet resides the matching numbers four-cylinder 1600 GT crossflow engine with the 711M block, quoted in the sales brochure at 86bhp, offering 100mph with little effort and 0-60 in under 11 seconds. Correct specification throughout from the AC oval metal airbox finished in silver to the Weber 32/36 DGV-FA carburettor will also please marque enthusiasts. The top-plate reveals the chassis number and the original VIN plate and AVO ID plate remain fixed to the slam panel.Fitted with the correct pressed steel wheels with the cooling slots measuring 5.5 x 13" and immaculate chrome hubcaps and a matching set of Goodyear GT Sport 175/70 R13. The remote servo-assisted brakes powered by the early Girling Powerstop AHV 550 Mk2A help grip the front discs and the rear drums more than adequately.Interest in Performance Fords from the 1970s and 1980s shows no signs of abating and this remarkable Sunset Red Mexico would be an asset to any enthusiast of these era-defining, characterful, sporting Fords.Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT MK1 MEXICO Year: 1972 Chassis Number: BFATMC00089 Registration Number: HAC 522K Transmission: Manual Engine Number: MC00089 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 520

An unrepeatable opportunity to acquire a car that’s been purpose-built to take on one of the world’s greatest motor sport challenges, yet remains UK-registered and road legal.  The Sport version of Audi's sensational Quattro was launched in the autumn of 1983, three years after the original's unveiling at the Geneva Salon had taken the motoring world by storm. It had a shortened wheelbase and was fitted with a new, lighter version of the five-cylinder engine boasting an aluminium block and a Twin-Cam 20-valve cylinder head, while anti-lock braking made its first appearance on a Quattro-equipped Audi. Running on Bosch HI-Jetronic fuel-injection, the extensively revised engine developed a claimed 306bhp and gave this quite remarkable road car a top speed of around 155mph. Audi built 214 examples of the Sport, though only 164 were actually sold to customers. We are delighted to be able to offer Keith Edward's legendary 800bhp-plus, SWB Audi S1. It was initially purchased by garage owner and rally driver Keith as a family road car but there were always lots of cars around and the Audi was eventually hardly used. Passionately interested in motorsport, Keith was staring at the car one day and considering selling it, but then he thought that it might be fun to prepare it for a bit of hill climbing at local club level. There simply is not space here to cover the next 30 years of the Quattro's history but a lot of it is available on some much-watched videos and magazine articles. Success at club level led to the car being developed further and further as Keith is a talented and innovative engineer, until it was so competition-focused that it was no longer practical to run it as a road-registered car.Developed and then developed some more over the years, there followed about ten years in the British Hillclimb Championship, a further four or five enjoying invitation events around Europe and finally the ultimate accolade, an invitation from Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to take part in 'The Race to the Clouds'.Keith has a legendary attention to detail and throughout the two decades of development, every nut, bolt, pipe and bracket was given consideration in terms of its weight, fitness for purpose and aesthetic merit with shaving tenths of a second the criteria. There came a point however, when the only way to make the car more competitive was to shorten the wheelbase, as had been done by the factory in late 1983 and Dialynx of Swindon, renowned Quattro specialists and builders of SWB cars and Sport Quattro 'Group B' replicas, were tasked with the job.The body was stripped of its panels, reduced in length by removing 320mm between the B and C posts and rebuilt using Kevlar-composite panels and mouldings (copied directly from Audi UK's own 'Group B' car), with most of the glass replaced by Perspex. Only the original roof and doors remained and even the doors were pared down to about 4lbs in weight. Shortly afterwards, the 10-valve engine was replaced by a 20-valve unit which was extensively modified by Dialynx. Details of these engine mods are academic as the engine has been further developed by Keith himself since then (current spec below). The car's adventures in Europe in this form are all documented in the enormous history file and on a number of YouTube videos. The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), also known as 'The Race to the Clouds', is an invitational automobile hill climb to the summit of Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain in Colorado - and is held on the last Sunday in June. From the start at 9,400ft, the 12.42 mile course has 156 bends and finishes at 14,115ft, a climb of over 4,700ft, not far short of a mile vertically. If you were in an unpressurised aeroplane at that height you would have been wearing an oxygen mask for some time, so setting up an internal combustion engine to run on reduced oxygen levels can be complex. The invitation to run the car at Pikes Peak is a major honour within the hill climb community and was proudly received by Keith. The Audi was shipped to Colorado Springs in both 2018 and 2019, however neither year was to bring fulfilment, with the car overheating in 2018 (subsequently sorted after testing at Blyton Park, pre-COVID) and despite good practice runs in 2019, the clouds closed in on Race Day and that was that. The full story is on YouTube. Whilst intending to return in 2020, COVID regulations, increasing costs and lack of time mean that Keith has sadly made the decision that after 30-plus years, having accomplished everything else, he and his beloved Audi will have to part ways.We understand that the Audi would be welcome again at Pikes Peak with Keith having received another invitation recently or, closer to home, would be welcome here in the UK at club level hill climbs, sprints or even Time Attack. UK-registered and road-legal (subject to a few sensitive modifications) it could be used on the road driving to events, but equally it could just be a perfect showpiece in any serious Collection. This car has been viewed more than 2,000,000 times on YouTube and has been magazine-featured all over the globe. limited edition silkscreen print on paper, signed and numbered 21/295, from the Affairs of The Heart Collection, 2004 mounted, framed and under glass image size 50cm x 40cm, overall size 89cm x 78cm Note: Jack Vettriano was born in Fife, Scotland in 1951. After leaving school at 15, he followed his father down the mine, working as an apprentice engineer. He later moved on to white-collar jobs in management services. Vettriano took up painting as a hobby in the 1970s when a girlfriend bought him a set of watercolours for his birthday and from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint. He learned his craft by copying Old Masters, Impressionists, Surrealists and a plethora of Scottish artists. Prior to moving from Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh, he decided to mark a break with his past work which hitherto had been sold under his family name Hoggan. From this time on, he adopted his mother’s maiden name. The turning point came in 1988 when he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Exhibition; both were sold on the first day and Vettriano was approached by several galleries. He held his first solo exhibition at the Edinburgh Gallery in 1992 entitled ‘Tales of Love and Other Stories’ and later that year, he exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London. He was represented by Portland Gallery from 1994-2007 and during this time, he had many sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York and counts Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Fergusson and Sir Tim Rice amongst his collectors. In 1996, Pavilion books commissioned W. Gordon Smith to compile an anthology, ‘Fallen Angels’, in which over 40 Vettriano images were accompanied by a selection of Scottish writing. Poets, playwrights, novelists and actors were asked for a personal response to an individual painting or poem. In the same year, Sir Terrance Conran commissioned Vettriano to create a series of paintings for Conran’s Bluebird Club in London. The seven paintings inspired by the life of Sir Malcom Campbell hung there for ten years. In 1998, Vettriano moved to London where he continued to have sell-out shows including, ‘Between Darkness and Dawn’, ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’ and ‘Affairs of the Heart’. The year 2004 was exceptional in Vettriano’s career; his best-known painting, ‘The Singing Butler’ was sold at Sotheby’s for close to £750,000; he was awarded an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts and was the subject of a Southbank show documentary, entitled ‘Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter’; Pavilion published a book ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’ being an anthology of his work to date with text by Anthony Quinn. In 2008, Vettriano was commissioned to paint portraits of Sir Jackie Stewart and Zara Phillips, the latter was part of a charity fundraising project for Sport Relief, the experience of which was captured in a documentary broadcast on BBC One in March 2008. Vettriano launched Heartbreak publishing and his own gallery also called Heartbreak in 2009. In the same year, he was commissioned by the Yacht Club of Monaco to create a series of paintings to mark the centenary of their world-famous yacht Tuiga. The subsequent exhibition ‘A Hommage a Tuiga’ premiered in Monaco as part of Classic Yacht Week. In 2010, an exhibition of over 40 new paintings, ‘Days of Wine and Roses’ was opened at the Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery in Fife. The exhibition then moved to London, opening at Heartbreak in September 2010. In September 2013, a major exhibition, ‘Jack Vettriano: A Retrospective’ opened at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. It featured over 100 works and ran until February 23 2014. It attracted 123,300 visitors and broke the attendance records held by a Van Gogh exhibition in 1948. Vettriano sold his gallery in London in 2015 and later that year established his own publishing company: Jack Vettriano Publishing. Limited. In 2017, He was one of three artists commissioned to paint portraits of Scottish comedian Billy Connolly. These were then put on display in Glasgow People’s Palace, while images were transferred to murals in the centre of Glasgow. It was the subject of a BBC documentary first broadcast on June 14, 2017.
