Hubert Thornley (fl.1859-1898) "Chatham", moonlight scene on the Thames Signed "Thornley" and inscribed with the title, oil on canvas, 34.5cm by 29cm According to art historian Denys Brook-Hart, Thornley was actually called Charles Thornley working from an address in Paddington, London, later moving to Rochester in Kent. Although called Charles, but known as William Thornley. He would sell and exhibit under the names Charles, William or Hubert Thornley or variations of Thornberry. Flourished from 1859-1898 and exhibiting at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the British Institution from 1861-1867.

A Fitter by occupation, he attested for service in the 60th Rifles at Rochester on 1 October 1874, aged 20 years. He served extensively abroad, in India, January 1877-December 1878; Afghanistan, December 1878-October 1880; Mari Country, October-November 1880; India, November 1880-January 1881; South Africa, January 1881-January 1882; Egypt, September 1882-February 1883; India, September 1885-October 1886; Burma, October 1886-December 1888, and India, December 1888-March 1895. For his services he was awarded the above two Afghan War medals, the Egypt Medal and Khedive’s Star and the I.G.S. Medal with clasp for Burma 1887-89. After transferring to the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade in February 1895 he was discharged having given notice on 26 February 1896. Sold with copied service papers. £450-£500

Dragon), mounted as worn, British War and Victory Medals worn; others nearly very fine and better six: attributed to G. E. Mingay, Royal Navy 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star, clasp, France and Germany; Africa Star, clasp, North Africa 1942-43; Burma Star; Italy Star; War Medal 1939-45, all unnamed, mounted as worn, these nearly extremely fine (16) £300-350 M.I.D. London Gazette 8 January 1942. william Edmund Mingay was born in Portsmouth. He entered the Royal Navy as a Ships Stewards Boy in March 1909 and was advanced to Ships Stewards Assistant when serving on the Black Prince in September 1911. During the Great War he served on/was based at Halcyon, Actaeon I, Pembroke and Hussar, on which latter ship he was appointed Victualling Chief Petty Officer in February 1918. Mingay was promoted to Warrant Supply Officer in August 1931 and Commissioned Supply Officer in July 1939. As such, during the war, when based at Excellent II, he was mentioned in despatches for his services during the withdrawal from Crete. In September 1942 he was promoted to Lieutenant. In 1944 he received a Certificate of Appreciation for ‘his fine example of tireless devotion to duty whilst serving on my staff during the training and preparatory stages of the invasion of France, and during Operation Neptune’ - signed Flag Officer Commanding Force ‘S’. During 1945 he held the rank of Acting Lieutenant Commander. He retired from the Navy in 1946 and died in 1979. Sold with framed M.I.D. Certificate and a framed Certificate of Appreciation and copied service papers. professor Gordon Edmund Mingay, B.A., Ph.D., was born in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, on 20 June 1923, the son of William Edmund Mingay, R.N. Educated at Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School, Rochester, and the University of Nottingham. Mingay lectured at the Woolwich Polytechnic and the London School of Economics before taking the chair of Professor of Agrarian History at the University of Kent in 1965. Latterly living at Selling, he retired in 1983 and died in 2006. Sold with newspaper cutting with photograph and obituary. £300-£350

Pair: Private L. L. Ackermann, 7th Battalion, East Kent Regiment, who was killed in action on 1 July 1916 british War and Victory Medals (G-5053 Pte., E. Kent R.) nearly very fine (2) £120-150 Leon Lorden Ackerman was born and lived at Lynsted, Kent and enlisted at Sittingbourne, Kent. He was killed in action in France and Flanders on 1 July 1916 whilst serving with the 7th Battalion, East Kent Regiment. the following is extracted from a phoocopied newspaper cutting included with the lot: ‘... Mr Leon Ackermann, who was 29 years of age, enlisted in the Buffs at the outbreak of the war and at the time of his death was a Lance Corporal. He was killed on July 1st in the great advance. He was formerly an architect and draughtsman in the office of Messsrs Drake and Boucher, of Rochester, but for four years before the war he suffered bad health and relinquished that position. He had just recovered when the war broke out. He was very popular in his village and much sympathy is felt with the bereaved family.’ Sold with copy of m.i.c. which confirms that he was additionally entitled to a 1914-15 Star. £120-£150

A rare Victorian Royal Marine M.S.M. dated ‘1848’ on obverse awarded to Sergeant Henry King, R.M. royal Marine Meritorious Service Medal, V.R., dated ‘1848’ below bust (Hy. King, Serjt. R.M. Chatham Divn. 30 Years) officially engraved naming, edge bruising, otherwise very fine £1400-1600 One of probably only 39 Royal Marine Meritorious Service Medals issued with the ‘1848’ dated obverse. sergeant Henry King was born in the parish of South Hall, near Uxbridge, Middlesex. He was 20 years of age and a clerk by trade when he attested for the Chatham Division, 21st Company, of the Royal Marines at Rochester, Kent, on 27 October 1826. He served as a Private from 27 October 1826 to 20 January 1831 (4 years 86 days), as Corporal to 30 June 1840 (9 years 162 days), Sergeant to 3 August 1844 (4 years 34 days), Colour Sergeant to 24 July 1846 (355 days) and, on resigning his Colours, as Provost Sergeant to 5 April 1847 (1 year 255 days), and finally as Hospital Sergeant to 21 June 1861 (14 years 77 days) for total servitude of 34 years 239 days, of which 10 years 280 days were Afloat and 23 years 324 days were At Home. He embarked on the Orestes from February 1828 to March 1831 (3 years 24 days), the Winchester from July 1834 to June 1838 (3 years 336 days), and the Queen from October 1840 to July 1844 (3 years 285 days). Henry King was ‘Set Off the Rolls’ on 28 June 1861, discharged due to length of service. he was awarded the Royal Marine Meritorious Service Medal and an Annuity of £5 from 13 January 1857. This sum was increased to £10 from April 1877 and he was still receiving this after 1884. Provost Sergeant King also received the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (Wide Suspender) without a Gratuity in January 1862. AN ITALIAN COMB-MORION, CIRCA 1580 formed in one piece with a rounded crown rising to a high roped medial comb decorated to either side of its apex and base with incised lines, and an integral brim turned down at each side and rising to an acute point at the front and the rear (the front point bruised), its edge decorated with a file-roped inward turn bordered by a narrow groove, the base of the crown pieced at the nape with a pair of holes for the attachment of a plume-holder (missing) and encircled by six (originally fourteen) lining-rivets with brass rosette-washers, retaining its original blued finish overall The morion is one of a series offered for sale between the World Wars by W. H. Fenton & Sons of 11 New Oxford Street, London. An undated circular of Fenton (photographic copy held in Royal Armouries Library, Leeds) illustrates a morion almost identical to that offered here. Fenton was selling the morions by at least 1933. According to a later verbal report of his armourer, Theodore Egli, they had been obtained in Ireland. Examples are now to be seen in the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds, Inv.No. IV. 449 (A. R. Dufty & W. Reid European Armour in the Tower of London, London, 1968, pl. CII.c), the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Acc. Nos Hen. M. 32, 33 & 34-1933 (Ian Eaves, Catalogue of European Armour at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Woodbridge, Suffolk, & Rochester, N.Y., 2002, pp. 153-5, ill.), and the Glasgow Museum and Art Gallery. The group also included "Spanish" morions, examples of which are once again to be seen in the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (Eaves, op. cit., pp. 161-2).

XII MARCH MDCCCIX, (12th March 1809), gilded double ogee langet, stirup hilt, leather grip each side with three rossettes, gilt brass and stepped pommel, contained in its steel scabbard with gilt brass mounts and bearing the crest of the Corps. provinence from a direct discendant: by family repute, Henry Blosse Lynch, born 1778, died 1st June 1813, he was a Major in the 73rd Regiment and served under the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular War, M.I.D., for his gallantry at the sige of Ciudad Roderigo, (1812). He was the father of two sons, he lived at Party House, Co Mayo, Ireland.
