1722. 9 George I,. [includes the Workhouse Test Act], contemp. calf, worn, folio. Contains An Act for Amending the Laws relating to the Settlement, Imployment, and Relief of the Poor. Statute, known as the Workhouse Test Act, was sponsored by the SPCK. It encouraged parishes to found workhouses to provide the poor with work and accommodation. Also includes An Act for Enabling His Majexty to put the Customs of Great Britain under the Management of One or more Commissions, and for better securing and ascertaining the Duties on Tobacco..; An Act for the more effectual Punishing wicked and evil?disposed Persons going Armed in Disguise, and doing Injuries and Violence to the Persons and Properties of His Majesty's Subjects..; Acts to inflict Pains and Penalties on John Plunket, George Kelly alias Johnson, and Francis Lord Bishop of Rochester; and Acts relating to the South Sea Company. The "Act.. for Punishing wicked and evil?disposed Persons" became known as the "Block Act", and created about fifty new capital offences, including killing game, breaking down fences, and going in disguise.
