John Van Nost: An important and rare lead figure of a swan early 18th century beak plumbed for water 94cm.; 37ins high The van Nosts were a family of sculptors of Flemish descent. The eldest, John van Nost, is first recorded working at Windsor Castle circa 1678. He had his own yard in Haymarket, London by about 1687 and manufactured ‘Marble and Leaden figures, Busto’s and noble Vases, Marble chimneypieces and curious Marble tables’, however he is best remembered as a supplier of lead garden statuary. One of his earliest patrons was Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall, Vice Chamberlain to Queen Anne, for whom he supplied a large quantity of lead statuary and decoration in 1700. This included £10 |for a boy and swan for a fountain, the swan in proportion to the boy, no bigger than the young Triton| whilst a |duck and swan as big as ye life| cost £8. Van Nost went on to furnish with sculpture some of the most important gardens in the country including Hampton Court, Buckingham House, Castle Howard and Wrest Park. The quality of casting and chiselling on this extremely rare piece would certainly suggest an attribution to Van Nost and of the other suppliers of lead in the 18th century, including John Cheere, and Andrew Carpenter, no other lead models of swans are recorded.

After Giambologna: A white marble figure of the Grotticelli Venus Italian, 2nd half 19th century 180cm.; 71ins high Giambologna was born in Douai Flanders (now in France). After youthful studies in Antwerp with the architect-sculptor Jacques du Broeucq, he moved to Italy in 1550, and studied in Rome. Giambologna made detailed study of the sculpture of classical antiquity. He was also much influenced by Michelangelo, but developed his own Mannerist style, with perhaps less emphasis on emotion and more emphasis on refined surfaces, cool elegance and beauty. Giambologna spent his most productive years in Florence, where he had settled in 1553. Ten years later, he was named a member (Accademico) of the prestigious Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, just founded by the Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici in January 1563, under the influence of the painter-architect Giorgio Vasari, becoming also one of the Medici most important court sculptors. Giambologna’s several depictions of Venus established a canon of proportions and set models for the goddess’s representation that were influential for two generations of sculptors, in Italy and in the North. This figure is often paired with the Cesarini Venus carved in 1582. Some ten years before he carved the Cesarini Venus, Giambologna had completed another marble Venus for Prince, later Grand Duke, Francesco de’ Medici, who kept it in his bedroom. After his death, it was installed in 1592 by his brother Ferdinando, who succeeded him, in the third chamber of the protto designed by Bernardo Buontalenti in the Boboli Gardens in Florence. Because this chamber was called the Grotticella, the statue became known as the Grotticella Venus.

Helaine Blumenfeld, born New York 1942 Venus 1991 Travertine Marble Unique 203cm.; 80ins high by 70cm.; 27½ins wide Helaine Blumenfeld is recognized as one of Britain’s leading contemporary sculptors working in marble and bronze. In a career spanning more than four decades, her work has been shown in over 70 exhibitions worldwide. She has completed more than 80 commissions and her sculptures have been sited in public and private settings throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. Elected Vice-President of the Royal British Society of Sculptors (2004-2009), in 2007 she became the first and only female winner of the prestigious International Sculpture Prize, ‘Pietrasanta e la Versilia nel Mondo’. That year Blumenfeld exhibited at Het Depot Sculpture Gallery in Wageningen, The Netherlands. This was a major presentation which Helaine considers to be one of her most important public exhibitions. In 2010 ‘Blumenfeld in the Town Hall, Oslo’ took place under the curatorship of Anfinsen Kunst. Erik Anfinsen has represented Blumenfeld in Scandinavia since 1986. Blumenfeld has used her public profile to broaden access to and appreciation of her medium, initiating and organizing regular exhibitions at the Harold Martin Botanical Gardens in Leicester and at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. In July 2011 she was one of the few non-British artists ever to have been awarded an Honorary OBE for her outstanding contribution to art.

Jonathan Loxley, born 1960 Ubik Italian Bardiglio Imperiale marble on enamelled aluminium base Unique 195cm.; 77ins high by 55cm.; 21½ins wide Between 1979 and 1981, Loxley studied marble sculpture techniques in Florence, Italy. After leaving education, Loxley painted stage sets and created sculptures for film and theatre sets. He worked on set design for cult films such as Labyrinth and A Fish Called Wanda. In 1989, Loxley established a studio in Carrara, Italy. Since then, he has had several exhibitions in Italy, and across Europe. In 1993, he was commissioned by David Bowie to create a sculpture to celebrate Bowie’s marriage to Iman. In 1999, Loxley took part in The Shape of the Century - 100 Years of Sculpture in Britain at Canary Wharf, London. His work has also been featured at the Hampton Court Flower Show and Henley Art Show, both in 2001.

John Van Hage: A monumental Fire sculpture rose quartz 288cm.; 113ins high by 210cm; 82½ins wide by 135cm.; 53ins deep This piece was designed by the award winning John Van Hage who was the youngest person ever to win two prestiges gold medals at the RHS flower show and the Fiskars Sword of excellence at the garden show. John is currently working on a large project alongside Sir Terance Conran, Kengo Kuma and Sir Normal Foster. This monumental piece of high grade rose quartz (6 tons) was sourced and transported from Brazil to the marble yard Porcilli Marmi in Italy. The central aperture is fitted with a gas flame and lights whilst the centre of the piece is drilled and plumbed to allow water to flow over the surface.
