Somerset - Batcombe Tythes. Group of three vellum and two paper documents, 1771-86, all revealing the dissatisfaction of the Rector of Batcombe with the level of revenue he was receiving from the local tythes, the vellum documents retaining numerous signatures and wax seals. This interesting group of documents provides considerable information on the ancient feudal system of tythes and the payments made. Each vellum document is in effect a contract between the Rector and the local population for an increase in the annual tythes with the threat that if they declined the increase in payments, he would "take the tythes in kind".
