Throughout the Qing, cameos from it were represented on both vases and dishes. See for example the famille rose plate [sold in Ewbank's/Lot 2150/6-12-2024] that depicts Zhang Sheng riding off to take the Imperial Examination. See also the Yongzheng dish at Polesden Lacey in Surrey [NT.1245678.2] Illustrated in 'Borrowed Landscapes' by Emile De Bruijan. Other scenes on Qing Ceramics, include: Zhang Sheng playing the Qin, whilst Yingying and Hongnian listen [V&A. 665-1907]; and a variety of incidents from the story on a rouleau vase [V&A. George Salting Bequest. C.859-1910]. For a summary of the genre, see both the 2011 paper by W.-C. Hsu [Illustrations of Romance of The Western Chamber on Chinese Porcelains; Iconography, Style and Development]; and the paper by Professor Craig Clunas [Oriental Ceramic Society Transactions, 1981-1982] entitled 'The West Chamber: A Literary Theme in Chinese Porcelain Decoration'.Condition Report: Please note that there is some damage and deterioration to this lot.
