A novelty Victorian silver inkwell and stand, having crystal cut ink bottle with leaf shaped hinged cover, removable from shallow leaf shaped dish with vine supports and feet, hallmarked by Hukin & Heath, London, 1888, possibly designed by Christopher Dresser with engraved retailers mark of Thornhill, New Bond St, London to dish and cover of ink bottle, overall approx. 8cm high x 15cm widest point, weight approx. 124.4 grams (4ozt) Further details: dish / stand with slight pitting, marks and scratches, one vine support broken from connection to leaf itself in past; tarnishing. Ink bottle with chip to foot rim, smaller nibbles or fleabites, some wear and tarnishing to silver.

Good condition overall, some general pitting and scratching commensurate with age. The hallmarks to the inside of the lid are clear. The hallmarks to the dish are slightly rubbed, most notably to the date letter. The hallmarks to the collar of the bottle are slightly worn. The glass bottle is loose in its stand and rocks back and forth. The decoration is clear. Some marks to the rim of the dish. First assayer (assaggiatore) Giuseppe Fontana (1789-1814), second assayer (contrassaggiatore) Giuseppe Veroni (1779-1824), the quatrefoil-shaped inkstand designed with a beaded border and foliate quarters, complete with blue glass inkwells and detachable inkwell holders, both pierced and decorated with laurel garlands to sides, the hinged covers with foliate finials, inkstand engraved with monogram, 30cm wide, approx. weight 15.5ozt (exc. glass inkwells) Footnotes: For a description of the marks on this piece, please see: Argenti Italiani del Settecento. Pp 12-17Stamped with the mark for Giuseppe Fontana used until the end of 1793, at which point his mark changed (see pg. 17, Donaver & Dabbene) and the mark for Giuseppe Veroni used pre 1793. These marks therefore indicate that the inkstand was assayed c.1793.
