Royal Memorabilia, Pigeon Fancier/Carrier, and local Norfolk interest. EXTREMELY RARE and PROBABLY UNIQUE New Year Greeting to HRH Queen Elizabeth II delivered by carrier pigeon from the British Trawlermen Association for her first New Year's Day as Queen on 1st January 1953 (Coronation Year). This lot contains all the planning and preparatory letters for this 'first', details of the chosen pigeons for the task, the cannister from the pigeon that successfully made the journey and the original message. All the original newspaper and magazine cuttings and photographs of the pigeons telling of the story are present as well as the letters that followed including details of a special trophy that was later awarded to Turvey for this accomplishment. There are also numerous other photographs and pigeon related letters and information. The story itself was of the late local Sheringham pigeon fancier, Colin Turvey - former military personnel who worked with wartime pigeon carriers. Turvey sent 4 pigeons to a fellow pigeon fancier in Hull. His job was to ensure that the pigeons that were sent were safely installed on the trawler boat 'Cape Spartel', which was leaving for the arctic ocean to Bear Island on a fishing trip, from which the three pigeons were released with New Year Greetings. Each pigeon had a small red plastic cannister with a screw top attached to its leg, each containing the same greeting to the Queen. The hope was that at a difficult time of the year in terms of weather conditions was that at least one pigeon would make the c.200 mile journey back to its home loft. They were released and one of the pigeons - 'Jack' by name - made it safely back to Colin Turvey's loft in Sheringham. He then drove the message to Sandringham and hand delivered it to the Queen on New Year's day 1953. Whilst at Sandringham Turvey met and chatted to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh who was also a keen pigeon fancier (as was The Queen.) (See newspaper article included in the lot) The message read: (To) HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN, SANDRINGHAM, BY PIGEON FROM TRAWLER 'CAPE SPARTEL', NEW YEARS DAY 1953, 0900 HOURS' and 'YOUR GRACIOUS MAJESTY, THE TRAWLER FISHERMEN OF BRITAIN SEND THEIR HEARTIEST LOYAL GOOD WISHES TO YOUR MAJESTY FOR THIS HAPPY CORONATION YEAR, AND PRAY FOR A LONG AND SUCCESSFUL REIGN. (SIGNED) SKIPPER J.H.WOODELL, 'CAPE SPARTEL', BOUND FOR BEAR ISLAND'

Philip became a lecturer at Mansfield College of Art from 1965 to 1972 and a Senior Lecturer at Newport College of Art from 1972 to 1991. A draughtsman of the very highest order, Philip’s drawings of marine subjects are both breath-taking and brilliant in their observation and what he described as ‘retinal experience’. There is a strong surreal element to his paintings, showing very imaginative and poetic handling with what he termed ‘considerations of surreal and social themes’. During his life as an artist Philip Muirden always avoided the production of works with a unified, pre-conceived brand image. His output contains celebrations of his ‘retinal images’, such as the wonderful fishing boat subject matter he painted. His intellectually inspired work and reflections on the human condition were frequently presented.Provenance: decreased estate, PembrokeshireComments: frames/glazing loose, combined image of paintings not to scale, see description for measurements, inspection advised
