limited edition digital print on paper, signed in silver ink and numbered 64/100, from the Revelations : A Portrait of Magic Series mounted, framed and under glass image size 81cm x 63cm, overall size 101cm x 82cm Note: certificate of authenticity is included with this lot. Note 2: Scottish artist Stuart regularly hits the headlines with his Pop Art paintings. Fusing cartoons with themes of idealism and consumerism, his multilayered artworks blend the past with the present through layers of figurative imagery, text and symbols. His release, Revelations: A Portrait of Magic, depicts the central characters of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Stuart's McAlpine Miller’s spectral style has been described as ‘supernatural realism’ by the BBC and Radio 2 art critic Estelle Lovatt, who also praised its 4D aesthetic, adding that he has “one of the most creative minds in art today”. Using subtle tones of paint, he creates the illusion of transparency. The overall effect is similar to looking through a glass bottle, distorting the image and presenting a different version of the same subject. In turn, a far-fetched reality is created, highlighting the unrealistic expectations of today’s society. A graduate of the prestigious Glasgow School of Art, Stuart is an admirer of Old Masters such as Caravaggio and Hieronymus Bosch but is particularly inspired by one of the leading exponents of Pop Art, Andy Warhol. Stuart says: “Warhol’s views on mass consumerism and the way he translated these into his art is something I really relate to. I hope my art does something similar and stands the test of time.” Inspired by JK Rowling's Harry Potter novels, Stuart’s Revelations: A Portrait of Magic collection has captured best-loved characters including Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Albus Dumbledore, Draco Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. Stuart says: “The art of illusion and magic reveals itself through the unified bond of the three central characters. As we continue to work in unison, we open the doors to an unimagined future, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. A new era lies ahead, as yet unrecognised but already awaiting our arrival.” In 2011, Stuart was chosen as artist-in-residence by the world-famous Savoy hotel after its major refurbishment. During his time there, he produced the collection A Time For Reflection: The Savoy Suite, which offered a unique insight into the hotel's patron, including Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin. This popular release for Castle Fine Art was followed by Lost Lives/Split Personalities, which depicted some of history's most famous musicians including David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Freddie Mercury and George Michael. Music took on a new meaning for Stuart when he began playing the piano seriously. Stuart says: “Music has for me, like many others, greatly influenced my own approach to my art, and the potential it creates within. The emotion that music can reveal allows the listener to transport themselves to a time, a place and a feeling. Art can do the same. We just have to open our minds.” The piano and art took on a new significance for Stuart when he was commissioned by Paul McCartney to paint the piano which he used on his 2004 European Tour. Stuart’s talents also saw him work on several advertising campaigns including Renault, McVities and Virgin; he also painted a triptych of The Alternative Last Supper used as backdrop for the main dining scene in Stephen Berkoff’s 1998 film Decadence. Stuart McAlpine Miller has commissions and collectors around the world, and has exhibited internationally, including Connaught Brown, the Catto Gallery, Kings Road Gallery, Rebecca Hossack Gallery and Duncan Miller in London; Ruth O'Hara and Hoerle-Guggenheim in New York and the SOTA Gallery, Hong Kong, as well as through the Castle Fine Art network of galleries in the UK.

LAGAVULIN 1979 MISSION SELECTION NUMBER ONE 23 YEARS OLD | Distilled: 1979 | Stated age: 23 years old | ABV: 46% | Region: Islay | Country: Scotland | Type: Single malt Scotch whisky | Volume: 700 ml | Duty stamp: CZ | Packaging: wooden box | Estimate: 10 000 - 20 000 Kc | Distillery | Lagavulin is an iconic distillery from the island of Islay, founded in 1816 by John Johnston, although the site had previously been illegally distilled. The distillery is located between Ardbeg and Laphroaig and is renowned for its heavily smoky, peaty character. In 1862 the distillery was bought by John Logan Mackie, whose nephew Sir Peter Mackie, creator of the famous White Horse blend, was a major figure in the whiskey industry. After losing the exclusivity of representation to Laphroaig, he built a Malt Mill on Lagavula's grounds in 1908, but although it was designed to produce a whiskey similar to that of Laphroaig, it never succeeded. Her whiskey didn't even resemble Lagavulin. A fictional cask from this distillery played a central role in Ken Loach's film 'The Angel's Share'.Lagavulin is part of the Classic Malts range from Diageo (which owns it today) and its most famous whiskey is Lagavulin 16 Year Old, which is considered one of the best peated whiskeys on the market. In addition to this regular bottling, limited editions appear on the market in the form of Distiller's Edition, Diageo Special Release or for the Feis Ile festival. | Bottle | Lagavulin 1979 is a single malt whisky, bottled by independent bottler Murray McDavid in 2002 as part of their prestigious Mission - Selection Number One range. This series focuses on limited bottlings of exceptional and rare whiskies, often from closed distilleries or very old stocks. Whiskies from this series are bottled at natural cask strength, without chill filtration or added coloring, guaranteeing an authentic and complex flavor profile, exactly as the whisky was drawn from the cask. The bottle is decorated with the signature of the legendary Jim McEwan, who played a vital role in the restoration and reopening of the Bruichladdich distillery in 2001 and served as master distiller until 2015. His signature appears only on truly exceptional bottlings, still prized by whisky connoisseurs and collectors today.Nose: Complex, with notes of lemon peel, seaweed, almonds, smoke, and subtle sweet hints.Taste: Herbal and peaty, with elements of pine, salty sea water, fireplace smoke, and dried fish. The citrus notes from the nose recede into the background here.Finish: Medium length, with lingering notes of ash, woody tannins, and a subtle hint of sea air.The auctioned bottle is no. 12/600 and is presented in a luxurious wooden box.

The Distillers Edition is a special series that uses double maturation. After an initial maturation in traditional oak casks, the whisky is transferred to sweet Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, adding richer complexity and a subtle sweetness that harmonizes with the peaty notes typical of Lagavulin.Nose: Intense aromas of peat and vanilla, complemented by notes of raisins, sea salt, leather, and orange marmalade.Taste: A sweet and fruity introduction transitions into strong smokiness with notes of dried grapes and a subtle saltiness.Finish: Very long, with lingering notes of peat and fruit intermingling with hints of oak and smoke.Lagavulin 1991 The Distillers Edition is a favorite among collectors and distillery fans for its distinctive and complex character. Y A RARE 'ADELIE' PENGUIN EGG FROM THE AUSTRALIAN 1911-14 ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION ADELIE LAND, ANTARCTIC, EARLY 20TH CENTURY Egg, paper, wood 7cm high, 5.5cm diameter (max) Provenance: F.H. Bickerton Ex Private collection An old note reads: "9, Osborne Place, Plymouth. 'Adelie Penguin Egg from Adelie Land, Winter ( ... ?) of Australian Antarctic Expedition 1911 -14. F.H. Bickerton.' The egg inscribed in pencil: 'Adelie Penguin Expedition 1911 - 14 F.H. Bickerton' The Adelie penguin 'Pygoscelis Adeliae' is a species found along the entire coast of the Antarctic continent, the only place where it lives. Together with the emperor penguin, the most southerly distributed of all penguins. The Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-14) Was the first Australian led expedition to the Antarctic. Headed by Douglas Mawson, they explored the largely uncharted Antarctic coast due south of Australia. Francis Howard Bickerton (1889 - 1954) was an explorer, soldier, entrepreneur, big game hunter, aviator and film maker. Not only did he contribute to the Australian Expedition, he was later recruited by Sir Ernest Shackleton's 'Endurance' expedition. Apart from collecting this rare egg specimen, the expedition also discovered the Adelie Land Meteorite, which identified the Antarctic region as the richest meteorite field on the face of the planet. Without doubt, Bickerton's life and career, war-time antics, hunting expeditions, explorations, business investments, party going in London in the 1920s, were those of 'legend'. Vita Sackville-West fell passionately in love with Bickerton and asked him to become the father of her child (an honour which he declined) however, she did take Bickerton as the model for Leonard Anquetil, the hero in her best novel, 'The Edwardians' (1930). For another egg, from the 'Terra Nova' expedition, see: Sotheby's, Travel, Atlases, Maps and Natural History auction, November 2022, lot 191. AN INTERESTING SILVER MOUNTED SHEEP'S HORN POCKET SNUFF BOX NEW ZEALAND, DATED 1864 With Inscription in Māori 'Pakeha Day Kote Pai A Rewi New Zealand 1864' Translating as 'A Gift To You On Whitemans Day From Rewi New Zealand 1864' 1.5cm high, 5.5cm wide, 3.5cm deep Provenance: Ex Private New Zealand collection Acquired from Gerald Satin London 1960's who purchased it from the descendants of the British Military Commander Lieutenant-General Duncan Cameron Commander of Imperial Forces in New Zealand. Rewi Manga Maniapoto (1807 - 1894) was a principal Ngati Maniapoto chief who led rebel 'Kingitanga' forces during the New Zealand government invasion of Waikato in the New Zealand wars. The famous defeat in a hilltop peach grove at Orakau, known as 'Rewi's last stand' in April 1864 brought the Waikato War to an end and was immortalised in Rudall Hayward's 1925 silent film, remade as a talkie in 1940, 'Orakau'. Although the Māori led by chief Rewi lost the battle they are still remembered for their courage and their refusal to surrender. From March 31st to April 2nd the battle raged for three days between British troops and the Māori warriors. On the last day almost out of food, water and ammunition the Māori defenders of Orakau were of-fered a last chance to surrender. This demand was met with a now famous reply, 'E Hoa Ka Whai Whai Tonu Mātou Ake! Ake! Ake!' 'Friend we will fight on forever! Forever! Forever!' Many attribute these words to Rewi, but others believe they were uttered by Hauraki Tonganui, a Taupo Māori chief. However, their intent was clear and the phrase helped create the impression that Orakau was a historic last stand for the Māori. This was the decisive victory that Lieutenant-General Cameron had sought, and presumably Rewi knew this and it was one of the reasons for his presentation of this horn snuff box to Cameron. Twenty years after the war the New Zealand state restored to Rewi a measure of his 'mana' by building him a government house on a plot of land close to the site of his destroyed council 'whare' which he called 'Hui Te Rangiora'. It is here, in the soil for which he fought, that his bones lie buried, a sacred shrine to Māori patriotism in the heart of a Pakeha village. He came to prominence through mounting large-scale public projects in his current home of Los Angeles and as the main figure in the Banksy-directed film Exit Through the Gift Shop. A new era lies ahead, as yet unrecognised but already awaiting our arrival.”In 2011, Stuart was chosen as artist-in-residence by the world-famous Savoy hotel after its major refurbishment.
* STUART MCALPINE MILLER (SCOTTISH b. 1964), HYPNOTIC REVEAL limited edition digital print on paper, signed in silver ink and numbered 58/100, from the Revelations : A Portrait of Magic seriesmounted, framed and under glass image size 81cm x 63cm, overall size 101cm x 82cmNote: certificate of authenticity is included with this lot.Note 2: Scottish artist Stuart regularly hits the headlines with his Pop Art paintings. RUDOLPH VALENTINO AND VILMA BANKY AS AHMED AND YASMIN | Royal Dux (Czech / Bohemian around 1926) | around 1926 | painted, glazed ceramics | 34 cm | Lot description | The ceramic figurine of Rudolph Valentin and Vilma Banka in the roles of Ahmed and Yasmin is an excellent example of decorative art, inspired by the popular films of the 1920s. Created by the Royal Dux manufactory, this sculpture depicts the couple in a sensual dancing stance that evokes the romance and exoticism of the Orient as perceived by Western culture at the time. The inspiration from the film "Son of the Sheik" (1926), where Rudolph Valentino portrayed the iconic role of the Sheik, is reflected in the fine execution of details such as the expressive movement and stylization of the characters' clothing. The statuette stands out for its harmonious combination of colors and dynamics, which is supported by the play with glazes and the precise modeling of the figures. This work is not only an example of the masterful processing of ceramics, but also a cultural artifact that recalls the fascination of Western civilization with oriental motifs in the interwar period of Europe. | Bidders are asked to inquire about the condition of the item before the auction. any complaints will not be taken into account. | condition report*In case of missing photos, please feel free to contact us.

Original pale green cloth lettered and decorated in darker green, the spine lettered in gilt (spine darkened with some light spotting, extremities very lightly rubbed). Provenance: The Property of a Collector; Beatrice H. Maclaurin (etched bookplate designed by Sir David Young Cameron R.A.). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, of this collection of three stories which includes "Heart of Darkness", arguably the author's best-known and most influential work, and certainly the one which has most captured the public imagination. It includes the line "Mistah Kurtz - he dead" which T. S. Eliot chose as the epigraph to "The Hollow Men", and the story provided the inspiration for Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film "Apocalypse Now" which transferred the setting from the 19th-century Congo Free State to the Vietnam War. "Three stories including 'Heart of Darkness' from which Eliot took the epigraph ... for his 'Hollow Men'. This account of a superman running an ivory business in the heart of the Congo for a greedy sanctimonious Belgian company and brutalising himself and the natives in the process, is a masterpiece of sinister deterioration seen by a narrator who is himself profoundly altered by it" (Connolly). Cagle A7a; Connolly The Modern Movement 14; Ehrsam p.326; Keating 38; Modern Library Top 100 67 (citing "Heart of Darkness"): "... one of the most searing and relevant books of the twentieth century"; Wise 10: "Regarding this volume Mr. Conrad has furnished the following notes:- '"Youth" and "Heart of Darkness" are the first short stories of mine which attracted attention to my work in a wider sphere. Most critics dismissed "The End of the Tether" either with contempt or with a few cursory remarks. The first and second stories are autobiographical, the idea emerging from the narrative. The third story was suggested to me by the fate of a man I knew'."
