Brittle age craquelure throughout, flat and stable. Fairly open drying cracks in passages, largely through and surrounding the figure. There has been a campaign of retouching to suppress these in places (see images). There has been some abrasion to the paint layers, notably the hair/forehead, face, and drapery. A few scattered minor restored losses, including a small one in the hand holding the fan. Old ingrained yellowed varnish in passages. An upper, fairly even varnish, not too yellowed. Light surface dirt.

The first by Kuniyoshi (1797/98-1861)Actor doing a fan dance, 35.7cm x 22.5cm, together with a woodcut by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), Actor as Courtesan in Moonlight (Hazuki) from the series Junitsuki no uchi, 19.5 cm x 12.5cm (2) The first cut down and lacking margins, some slight patches of water staining to left side, minor creasing, short tear to one edge, some typical wear overall and minor discolouration, remnants of old tape to reverse. The second also cut down and pasted to black paper backing, some creasing and general wear.

A good collection of silver and costume jewellery - mostly second and third quarter 20th century, including a white metal and amethyst necklace; two glass faux-lapis lazuli bead necklaces; a pair of Danish silver leaf-design clip earrings; an Edwardian white metal and paste cluster target brooch; two white metal filigree floral brooches; a silver openwork modernist pendant, Edinburgh 2004 hallmarks; a turquoise bracelet; a Victorian shell cameo and fan-carved abalone necklace; an agate bead necklace with gilt ball spacers; etc.
Three mid-20th century feather fans - one with faux-tortoiseshell sticks and curved black and white feathers, 32cm long; and two ostrich feather fans, one black, the other stained pale blue (both with losses and deterioration); together with a group of mid-20th century hat pins.* The brown/white fan with curled feathers and blue fan are fully strung and no large feathers are loose. The black ostrich fan is almost completely unstrung with all but two of the strings broken. Both ostrich fans are shedding feather filaments. The blue fan is worse in this regard. The brown/white curled feather fan is not shedding at all and is in good condition overall.
