Three Doccia porcelain white figural candlesticks, c.1765, with two turbaned figures and another wearing a tall hat and long robes, each holding spirally-ribbed cornucopias and standing on elaborate scroll-moulded bases, two figures 18cm. high; the other 19.5cm. high (3)Provenance: Property of the Late Hugo Morley-Fletcher MA FSA (1940-2022).Note: These rare models may have been adapted from the series of ‘orientali’ of twenty-four figures (in two sizes) which were based on the engraved illustrations in 'Recueil de Cent Estampes representant différentes Nations du Levant', published in 1714, and which were thought to have been modelled by Gaspero Bruschi. Two candlestick figures of similar type, with coloured enamel decoration, are illustrated by Leonardo Ginori Lisci, La Porcellana di Doccia, Milan, 1963, Tav. LVI. For an example of the more common candlestick figure of Pomona by Bruschi (after Permoser) in the British Museum, also holding a cornucopia, see Aileen Dawson, ‘Unexpected Treasures – Doccia porcelain in the British Museum’, in Amici di Doccia, Quaderni, no. III, 2009, p. 19, and for the figure of Pomona from which the Pomona figural candlestick was adapted, see Paolo Jurio, ‘L’Europa de porcellana’, in Amici di Doccia, Quaderni, no. XIV, 2021, p. 61. For three candlestick figures representing Spring, Autumn and Winter, each holding a cornucopia, see Andreina d’Agliano, Lucca and the Porcelain of the Ginori Manufactory, Lucca, 2001, p. 224.Condition Report: All the nozzles are lacking.
