SCOTTISH GUILD OF HANDICRAFT, SET OF FOUR STENCILLED CANVAS FRIEZE PANELS, CIRCA 1905 each printed with Glasgow rose and foliate designs, on frame mountNote: The fabric used in these panels was originally part of the interior decoration for The Arcadia restaurant and tea rooms in Glasgow. The decoration was executed by the Scottish Guild of Handicraft circa 1905, whose members included John Ednie, Henry T. Wyse and a certain Charles Rennie Mackintosh. They were purchased by the current owner around a decade ago from someone who acquired them when the property was being redeveloped in the 1950s.The Arcadia is featured in The Studio - early 20th century art journal. As per page 46 of The Glasgow Style 1890-1920 (pub. Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries), '...The Guild was a Labour Co-Partnership Association and was registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act in 1903. Members held shares in the Guild, and were controlled by a committee which maintained standards by vetting their craftsmanship. The mutually supportive nature of the Guild is illustrated by the short lived Arcadian Gallery project. A J H Moffat, secretary of the Guild, was a designer and publisher's Art agent at 132 St Vincent Street. Here in 1907 Moffat and Clarke established The Arcadian Gallery, which combined a vegetarian restaurant with continuous exhibitions of contemporary art. The alterations and interior designs were by Henry T Wyse and the menu card by Jessie M King, both Guld members. This patronage was further demonstrated by Wyse who used stained glass made by John C Hall and was himself employed by the archistect Charles Soutar, both of whom were members.' 40cm high, 137cm wide Qty: 4 Overall, this lot is in good condition but shows some signs of age. The additonal images show some signs of use or storage, and the overall colour of the exterior shows age. There is some degradation to the edges, as some tacks have began to rust. The design looks strong and there no large tears or losses.

JEAN HIPPOLYTE MARCHAND (FRENCH 1883-1940) PAYSAGE DE PARIS Signed lower right, inscribed with artist's name and title to stretcher verso, oil on canvas 53cm x 45cm (21in x 17.75in) From the Estate of Dorothy Bohm Parisian suburban life is evoked in this verdant oil by Jean Hippolyte Marchand. A walker, an agricultural worker and a figure on horseback are painted with post-Impressionist brevity, their white headdresses suggesting we may be glimpsing the cloistered world of a religious order. The trees’ spindly boughs appear to bend in the breeze, their canopies ripening to an autumnal gold. Marchand imbibed the tonal vivacity and stylised naivete of French modernism. Often described as a cubist, it was in fact only his early work that explicitly channelled cubism’s crystalline delineation, and from the mid-1910s his forms assumed a gentler organic quality while retaining an avant-garde sensibility. Marchand attained the distinction of inclusion in Roger Fry’s 1910 Manet and Post Impressionism exhibition at London’s Grafton Galleries. He became acquainted with Clive Bell and henceforth folded into the Bloomsbury circle. A number of his works were acquired by the important collector Samuel Courtauld. Dorothy Bohm was a British photographer based in London, known for her portraiture, street photography, early adoption of colour, and photography of London and Paris. Maze was encouraged to use pastels by Edouard Vuillard, who said they were best-suited to Maze’s artistic vision. Dorothy Bohm was a British photographer based in London, known for her portraiture, street photography, early adoption of colour, and photography of London and Paris. λ  HOSSEIN VALAMANESH (IRANIAN/AUSTRALIAN 1949-2022) CHAI, AS CLOSE AS I COULD GET, 1998 MDF, enamel paint, fluorescent light, Perspex, water, glass, tea Height 83cm (32½in.) Edition of 5, plus A/P.Hossein Valamanesh (1949-2022) was an Iranian-Australian artist particularly known for his work in sculpture and installation. Born in Tehran, Valamanesh emigrated to Perth after completing his artistic studies. He spent time in Aboriginal communities before settling in Adelaide, where he would rise to prominence. Valamanesh never lost sight of his native Persian culture, investing his works with commentary on identity and nationhood. The artist's œuvre is remarkable for its assured minimalism and use of natural materials, as well as poetry and calligraphic text. A learned, literary mind, Valamanesh never shrinks from grand ontological questions, employing circular motifs to reflect his belief in the unity of Man and nature. The artist suffered a heart attack in 1995, which prompted him to engage with themes of mortality and transience. Valamanesh is survived by his wife, Angela, with whom he undertook numerous public commissions. His works have been exhibited internationally, including at Grey Noise, Dubai, Galerie Tanit, Munich, and the Institut des Cultures d'Islam, Paris. Valamanesh's work can be found in all Australian state collections, as well as the Kadist Art Foundation, Paris, and the Sara Hildén Art Museum, Tampere. He is the recipient of numerous awards, such as the Grand Prize at the 8th Asian Biennial (1997) and the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship (2014); in 2010, he was declared a Member of the Order of Australia. It is no coincidence that Chai, as close as I could get figures prominently on the cover of the artist's 2011 monograph, Hossein Valamanesh: Out of Nothingness. The installation calls forth familiar descriptors: spiritual, ethereal, poetic, understated. Visually inspired by a glass floating in a bubbly sink, Chai embodies the humility one has come to expect of Valamanesh's work. (1) In accessible formal language, this installation invites the viewer to resolve its title. Whereto is Valamanesh getting close? How does Chai answer this question? The artist's practice owes itself to many quarters: Arte Povera, Persian poetry, Sufi philosophy, Aboriginal Australia. The diversity of Valamanesh's references reflects his own composite identity, while his use of tea conjures up associations with trade and travel. Chai may be read as an eloquent and at least partly autobiographical commentary on migration. The tea hovers above the water, bathing in its light. The brightness and purity of this arrangement elevate the everyday to an almost religious experience, recalling the Islamic practice of wuḍūʾ and baptismal fonts. Chai is a monument to the transubstantial process of uprooting and resettling, inspiring a sense of what critics have termed 'cosmopolitan belonging,' fraught and challenging though it may prove. (2) Here, tea and water have achieved comfortable, amicable proximity, though they will never make contact. Perhaps - as the unmixed liquids imply - total assimilation is unlikely. The tranquil equilibrium of Chai suggests that this is no cause for regret. Rather, as Valamanesh's life and work demonstrates, cultural integration is possible, desirable even, when one settles in a new land without ever losing sight of the first. Here, the floating glass is held in delicate suspension, its contents recommending that we pause, sip, and breathe for a moment. As the great astrologer-poet Omar Khayyám once intoned, 'Each Morn a thousand Roses brings, you say: / Yes, but where leaves the Rose of Yesterday?' (3) This life is fleeting, yes, but so too is the fear of its end; Valamanesh invites us to embrace existence in all its beautiful fragility. Chai is not so much a memento mori, then, as a whispered carpe diem. To borrow the title of Valamanesh's first European retrospective, itself an allusion to Sufi poetry, Puisque tout passe: this too shall pass.1. Birds.- Edwards (George) A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, vol.1 only (of 4), hand-coloured etched frontispiece, title with engraved vignette, 52 etched plates, brightly hand-coloured "by the author... from prints revers'd", duplicate of plate no.32, contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper, light foxing and offsetting, bookplate, contemporary calf, ruled in gilt, spine gilt, double red morocco spine label, rebacked preserving original backstrip, a few stains to covers, slightly rubbed, [Anker 124], folio, Printed for the author, 1743. *** The contemporary ink inscription states: "This very extraordinary set of Edwards's birds etc. was color'd by the author, at the special request of a late-celebrated naturalist, for whom it was finished with the greatest care & accuracy. As a proof of the superior excellence of this copy it may be necessary to observe that all the plates in the first volume are done from prints revers'd - the advantage of which is pointed out in page 17 of the Preface, & the difference may be satisfactorily ascertain'd by examining the plates No.32 - (there being one of each sort) & all the plates in the remaining 3 volumes are marked with manuscript numbers, the reason of which may be seen at page 124 of the 2nd volume. The gleanings also are uncommonly fine so that upon the whole it may be pronounced, an extraordinary copy of a very valuable work." Another modern pencil inscription reinforces that this is a 'special copy with the plates coloured by the author".This is therefore the first volume of an "extraordinary" set of an already "very valuable work", with exceptionally rare counterproofs and allegedly the author's personal hand-colouring. A counterproof results from a costly and time-consuming process whereby a print is taken directly from another that has just been printed. While the ink is still wet, a print is passed through a rolling press again with a clean sheet of paper to get a second copy. In 1765, Edwards wrote to the Earl of Bute, a patron of natural history, to describe how counter proofs from the prints he etched for "History of Uncommon Birds" fooled some viewers who mistook them for drawings: “In the course of My Labours I have taken of reversed Prints of my history of birds on Sett as a Curiosity and have Colourd them higer than ordinary to make them appear Somtings like Drawings, they have deceive som[sic] people in that respect they having no marks of the copper Plates.” Counterproofs produced a subtle and softer image resembling a drawing that could be hand-coloured to better display the nuance of plumage, colour, and anatomy of specimens without the boldness of an engraved line. The second volume with counterproofs is held by The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg.

Her mystical and beguiling landscapes offer great insight into the career of this prolific artist. Born into impoverished conditions in Gourock, Low studied at the Glasgow School of Art during the Second World War before going on to study briefly under James Cowie at Hospitalfield House. Low had a great love of Scottish landscapes and they are a typical theme in her oeuvre - notably of Orkney where she spent numerous summers with her family in Hoy. By the 1960s her works moved further into abstraction, and she is best known for her works in this style. After her studies, Low co-founded the Clyde Group with J.D. Fergusson in 1942. With this group, Low co-organised Glasgow's first open air exhibition in 1956 at the Botanical Gardens. In 1963, she went on to open the New Charing Cross Gallery in Glasgow with John Taylor and Cyril Gerber, which received great critical acclaim for encouraging contemporary art in Scotland. Throughout her career she exhibited widely - including a retrospective of her work in 1985 at the Third Eye Centre (now the Centre for Contemporary Arts), and her work is held in numerous public and private collections.
