Taking the male body as a subject and my partner as a model, I place myself in the empowered position of the painter, redefining the idea of the "muse" from the first act of painting. I play with the depiction of the male body as an attempt to subtly challenge notions of beauty and masculinity, exploring its representation through the classical painting aesthetics of figuration and still life. Each work is an attempt to question the subjectivity of the body in relation with the stereotypes of the gender, by pushing the visual boundaries on the depiction of its shapes, cropping, submitting or objecting the body. Concepts of love and control, agency, and intimacy come across my practice creating and entangled web of images directly related to my lived experiences. By exploring the male figure, I get to experiment with all the decisions that depicting someone else's body implies, and to get a deeper understanding on my own power role in the process. In the work, I seek to analyse the ways in which we experience the other's body, playing with the nuances in between comfort and consent. From extreme body positions to the juxtaposition with other elements used as symbolic prompts, I have been producing images that deliberately challenge normative ideas of what masculinity might be, as well as purposely complicating and undermining them. In my most recent practice, I am interested on how male-gazed narratives have limited our perspective and understanding of the world. By visually prioritizing seemingly insignificant objects, I aim to give voice to the untold and break away from a singular worldview. The vases-objects that can be filled, carried, or destroyed- act as symbols to re-signify the male form just by placing them together. Reclaiming the classical painting language, I depict these elements to question the gaze and examine the given narratives that shape our visual perception of gender. These objects reformulate the compositional aspects of each image, distorting the human form and pushing toward abstraction when viewed from a close distance. Through this process, I aim to question conventional representation norms, satirizing gender stereotypes challenging their biased construction. * DAVID REDPATH MICHIE OBE RSA RWA FRSA RGI (SCOTTISH 1928 - 2015), FIVE DARK FISH ON HEAD oil on board, signed and dated '64framed and under glassimage size 29cm x 36cm, overall size 38cm x 45cm Note: David Michie was born at Saint-Raphaël in the south of France. His father, James Michie, was an architect and painter who had been an apprentice to Edwin Lutyens at the War Graves Commission, helping to lay out cemeteries in northern France after the First World War. His mother was the celebrated artist Anne Redpath OBE RSA. David’s early years were spent living in St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat where his father was private architect to American tycoon Charles Thompson. Later, the vibrant colour schemes of the Côte d’Azur would infuse his work. In 1934, David returned to Scotland with his family and settled in the Scottish Borders where David attended school in Hawick. In 1946, he enrolled at the Edinburgh College of Art but his time there was interrupted in 1947 with the introduction of National Service. He completed his service in the Signal Corps, qualifying as an instructor with the Royal Artillery Signals in 1949 and returned to Edinburgh College of Art where he was taught by William Gillies RSA. In 1953 he received a travelling scholarship to Italy, accompanied by his friend, the painter John Houston. They toured the Renaissance sites of Tuscany, and stayed in the hilltop towns of Anticoli Corrado and Orvieto in Umbria. John Houston RSA and his wife Elizabeth Blackadder RSA were to remain life-long friends. Colour was central to David’s painting. Working in both oils and watercolour, David’s subjects ranged from nature, garden compositions and his observance of people going about their everyday activities. His work was regularly inspired by his travels to far-flung places such as Australia, the USA and across Europe and is very effectively seen in his RSA Diploma painting On the Ramblas (1976) which invokes a colourful and busy Barcelona street scene. David taught widely, lecturing at James Clarke’s School in Edinburgh and Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen. He was a visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Art in Belgrade and the University of California. He returned to Edinburgh College of Art to teach painting during the 1960s and 1970s, and was Vice Principal there from1974-77. Between 1982 and 1990 he was Head of the School of Drawing and Painting. In 2009, he received an Honorary Fellowship from the College “in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the life of the college and the education of its students”. David was a prominent member of the Royal Scottish Academy, a former President of the Society of Scottish Artists and a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Founding Fellow of the Institute of Contemporary Scotland. He served on a number of professional panels including those of the Scottish Arts Council and the Scottish Education Trust. Sixty-seven of his paintings are included in many significant public collections such as Aberdeen Art Gallery, Glasgow Museums, the National Galleries of Scotland, the City of Edinburgh Museums, The Fleming Collection and the Tate. David was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1964 and Royal Scottish Academician in 1972. He was appointed OBE in 1997. Was a regular exhibitor in one-man shows at Mercury Gallery and later ones including The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh. Work held by HM Queen Elizabeth II.

The handwritten document is a letter dictated by Napoleon, addressed to his Minister of war, and relates to the besieges of the Spanish cities in Catalogne, Tortosa and Tarragone, including specific orders to his Marshals. Envoyez un officier près du Duc de Tarente pour savoir ce qu´il faut...´ (Translation: "Monsieur the Duke de Feltre, the capture of Mequinenza greatly facilitates that of Tortosa, since the Ebro river naturally provides the means of transporting the siege crew; but it is essential that the Duke of Taranto makes the siege to Tarragona while General Suchet takes in cahrge the siege to Tortosa. Send an officer to meet the Duke of Taranto in order to know what is needed..." Further, Napoleon sends military orders and clearly explains that he wishes to be informed about anything related to the French armies in Catalogne, saying `Voici la saison où la cavalerie peut vivre partout. This is the season when the cavalry can live anywhere. I wish to know positively the situation of things in this army. It must enter into communication with the army of Aragon. The Duke of Taranto will be able to leave more troops behind him to ensure his communications with France...") Further again, and to a postscriptum, dated in Rambouillet, 10th July 1810, Napoleon orders to swipe all harvests, stating `Le temps de la récolte est arrivé; si le duc de Tarente reste inactif, l´ennemi la coupera et la renfermera dans ses places fortes. C´est le moment d´approvisionner Barcelone, en fauchant tout autour´ (Translation: "The harvest time has come; if the Duke of Taranto remains inactive, the enemy will collect it and confine it to its strongholds. It is time to supply Barcelona, mowing down everything around") Accompanied by the original small manuscript acknowledgement of receipt. Paper with watermark. VGEtienne Jacques Macdonald (1765-1840) Marshal of France. Duc de Tarante.Louis Gabriel Suchet (1770-1826) Marshal of France. Duc d´Albufera. One of the most brilliant of Napoleon´s Generals. Suchet was appointed commander of the Army of Aragon mentioned in the present letter by Napoleon, and Governor of that region. Within two years, he brought the area into complete submission by wise and skillful administration no less than by his valor. In April 1810, he defeated O´Donnell at the Siege of Lerida, then laid siege to Mequinenza in May, as reported on the present letter. Suchet would capture Tortosa on 2nd January 1811, and for his successful Siege of Tarragona from May to June 1811, Suchet was made a Marshal of the Empire by Napoleon on 8 July 1811.

Espartero, Duke of Victoria, to Lt. Fredk. Lowe, Commr. of H.M.S.V. Prometheus, Septr. 24th 1843, as a memento of his Excellcy’s arrival in England in that vefsel Augst. 23, 1843’, in original presentation case, an impressive object of outstanding quality and in excellent condition £4,000-£5,000 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, April 2004. Frederick Lowe was born on 30 October 1811, entered the Royal Naval College in March 1825, and first went to sea in December 1826. He saw service on the North American, Mediterranean, and South American stations and, in August 1834, accompanied an expedition sent from Lima to Para under the orders of Lieutenant Smyth for the purpose of exploring the Pachitca, Maranon, and Ucayali rivers. He received his commission as Lieutenant on 17 November 1837, and assumed command of the steam vessel Prometheus on 23 February 1843. In that ship he effected the escape of General Espartero from Spain by conveying him from Cadiz to England, where they arrived on 23 August 1843, much to the evident relief of the general. Baldomero Espartero, Duke of Victoria , Duke of Morella, Prince of Vergara, Count of Luchana, Spanish general and statesman (1793-1879). Espartero fought against the French in the Peninsula War, and later against the revolutionaries in South America. After the death of Ferdinand VII in 1833, he supported Isabella II against the Carlists and won important victories in the Carlist War of 1834-39. His agreement with the Carlist general Rafael Maroto at Vergara in 1839 practically ended the war, and in the following year he was rewarded with the title Duque de la Victoria [Duke of Victory]. As a member of the Progressive party in the Cortes from 1837, Espartero played an important political role. His opposition to the Queen Regent, Maria Christina, helped force her to leave the country in 1840. The following year Espartero was made Regent by the Cortes and became virtual dictator of Spain. His ruthless suppression of opposition, notably at Barcelona, soon made him highly unpopular. In 1843 a general uprising took place and the rebels, declaring Queen Isabella to be of age, marched on Madrid, led by General Narvaez. Espartero, driven from office, embarked in the Royal Navy steam vessel Prometheus at Cadiz on 30 July 1843, and fled to England, where he remained until 1847. He was then restored to his honours and lived in retirement in Logrono until 1854, when he was placed by Isabella at the head of the Progressive party, but resigned in July 1856. After the expulsion of Isabella in 1868, he supported the provisional government, and in 1870 several members of the Cortes offered him the crown of Spain, but he declined it on the grounds of his great age and want of heirs.

The Art Institute of Chicago, which holds the Dalí plaster sculpture, notes, "Among Dalí's many memorable works, perhaps none is more deeply embedded in the popular imagination than Venus de Milo with Drawers, a half-size plaster reproduction of the famous marble statue (130 / 120 BC), altered with pompon-decorated drawers in the figure's forehead, breasts, stomach, abdomen and left knee. The combination of cool painted plaster and silky mink tufts illustrates the Surrealist interest in uniting different elements to spark a new reality. For the Surrealists, the best means of provoking this revolution of consciousness was a special kind of sculpture that, as Dalí explained in a 1931 essay, was 'absolutely useless . . . and created wholly for the purpose of materializing in a fetishistic way, with maximum tangible reality, ideas and fantasies of a delirious character.' Dalí's essay, which drew upon the ideas of Marcel Duchamp's readymades, inaugurated object making as an integral part of Surrealist activities.Influenced by the work of Sigmund Freud, Dalí envisioned the idea of a cabinet transformed into a female figure, which he called an 'anthropomorphic cabinet.' Venus de Milo with Drawers is the culmination of his explorations into the deep, psychological mysteries of sexual desire, which are symbolized in the figure of the ancient goddess of love."Dalí also made an oil on wood painting of the subject, Anthropomorphic Chest of Drawers, 1936, now in a private collection, Germany, and a lithograph, Drawers of Memory, 1965. Very good condition with no faults noted, nice bright colour to the silver, on a marble plinth which has some light scuffing which is essentially in good condition.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
