LOCKE, JOHNA Letter to the Right Reverend Edward Ld Bishop of Worcester, Concerning some passages relating toMr. Locke's Essay of Humane Understanding: in a late Discourse of his Lordships, in Vindication of the Trinity. Printed by H. Clark, for A. and J. Churchill...and Edw. Castle, 1697, First edition, second issue with the cancel title page. Modern panelled calf in period style. 7 x 4 1/4 inches (18 x 11 cm); [4] (half-title, title), 227, [1] pp.; A2 (title) in cancelled state, the stub of original title present. A rather fresh copy. For some years after its publication, Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding elicited few reactions. Following the publication in 1695 of his Reasonableness of Christianity and of Toland's Christianity not Mysterious in 1696, new criticism began to appear. "Critics accused him of undermining religion. The scholastic doctrine of substance was important to Christian theologians because it enabled them to give a rational explanation of the otherwise baffling dogmas of the Eucharist, the Incarnation and the Trinity. It was for this reason that Dr. Stillingfleet, Bishop of Worcester, said that Locke, having ‘almost discarded substance out of the reasonable part of the world,’ had thereby promoted atheism. Locke denied that he had done anything of the kind, and in his published letters to the Bishop of Worcester he repeated what he had said in the Essay to the effect that men's rational minds cannot conceive how ideas ‘should exist alone nor in one another," and so ‘suppose them existing in and supported by some common subject.’ Locke's point was that one had to believe in substance, even though he could find no proof of its existence" (Cranston, John Locke, a Biography, p. 276). The controversy with Stillingfleet was long and inconclusive, each author contributing three works. This is the initial rebuttal by Locke. It was only by the death of Stillingfleet in 1699 that it ended. No condition report?
