‡ MICHAEL FLYNN (1947-2025) Raku sculpture - dancing figures with dog, circa 2015, 36cms (h)Provenance: private collection CardiffAuctioneer's Note: from the early 1980s Flynn was recognised first nationally and then globally as a ceramic modeller of the highest order. By 1990 he was in museum collections across Britain, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, from the V&A in London, and the National Museum of Wales, to the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum in South Korea. His idioms were the human figure and animals, alone and in groups, invariably in motion, walking, running, dancing, making love. Flynn’s ability to capture movement in living creatures was rare, and this on its own placed him at the forefront of the contemporary sculpture and ceramic scenes. Flynn was born in Wuppertal, Germany, one of three sons of Irish parents. When Michael was in his teens, the family left Germany, and Michael spent some time living on a farm in Ireland, then at 16 went to Birmingham School of Art to study fine art. He trained as a teacher at Worcester College of Education, then taught in schools for a few years. In 1975 he started studies in ceramics at Cardiff School of Art, and his work attracted attention even before he finished his degree. He subsequently took a master’s in Fine Art, and spent the rest of his life and career based in the city. He held teaching posts at Cardiff School of Art, Camberwell College of Art (now part of the University of the Arts, London), the Royal College of Art, Columbia University in New York and NSCAD University in Canada. Solo exhibitions included two at CAA in London (Ceramic Focus, 1999, and Forest, 2009), Michael Flynn at the V&A (2001-02) and Transition and Resonance (Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre, 2013, and Aberystwyth Art Centre, Wales, 2014).Comments: together with associated leaflet & exhibition catalogue signed by the artist (sculpture NOT featured within)
