Contains 250 recipes (many of which are still on the menu in London's West-End restaurants today) contributed by members of the British theatrical profession of the day, including Noel Coward composing a Warsaw Concerto with eggs and onions, Sir Lawrence Olivier directing a Blanquette de Veau, and Hermione Gingold confiding the secret of a Kasbar Hash, 282pp. Compiled by Nora Delaney, Irish born variety and revue actress and wife of theatre impresario, Prince Littler (1901-1973) a practical kitchen guide, fully explaining all methods, avoiding chef's language and using straightforward ingredients, the royalties raised from the publication were donated to the Actor's Orphanage. Sent in response to a person asking for advice on how to stage 'Into The Woods' at the Grand Theatre, Aberdare and inviting Sondheim to a performance. Signed in black ink to the conclusion. Original envelope supplied.

Georgian era scrapbook compiled by John Newman (d.1824) of Southampton Street, Bloomsbury, London (father of John Henry Newman, who became a Catholic cardinal and was later canonised as a saint by Pope Francis). Many newspaper clippings, including: humourous stories; comical events; details of funerals for Lord Nelson, George III, William Pitt, and Princess Charlotte; stories about the Covent Garden theatre protests by the O.P.s; stories of public hangings; names synonymous with the period mentioned such as Jonathan Wilkes, Hogarth, Rousseau, Samuel Foote, Prince Regent. Ephemera included: Menu c.1800 for Lamy Restauranteur au Salo des Arts; Major Peter Labilliere broadside; Christmas 1790 menu for John Weeks, owner of well-known coaching inn the Bush Tavern, Bristol, includes turtle (weight 47lb), bittern, reindeers tongues, stares (starlings) and Tenby oysters; playbill for famed conjurer and notorious quack Gustavus Katterfelto; two posters advertising Alton Races (Hampshire), which included donkey racing, catching a pig, a gingling match, and a cheese to be run for by men in sacks. Many hand-written clippings, including: comical observations, bon mots, epigrams, copied poems, lists of famous pugilists, copied passages of text, The Groves of Blarney lyrics and score. Measurements: 33 x 27cm. Around 187 sides of scrapbook filled, and some loosely inserted material. Condition: exterior with some bumping/rubbing at edges, some cracking along joints. internally solid, some browning/marking in places, ephemera condition varied but largely as it was when compiled. Highly evocative, encapsulates the Georgian era, carefully assembled for posterity by John Newman.
