A GEORGE III OAK THIRTY-HOUR LONGCASE CLOCKJ. STORR, YORK, CIRCA 1775The four pillar countwheel bell striking two-handed movement with anchor escapement for regulation by seconds pendulum, the 12 inch brass break-arch dial with matted centre and applied slivered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes to outer track, with scroll pierced steel hands and framed rococo scroll cast spandrels to angles beneath silvered boss engraved J. Storr, York flanked by conforming Pegasus cast mounts, the case with stepped ogee shaped caddy superstructure over architectural cornice and hinged break-arch glazed dial aperture, the trunk with concave throat moulding, on stepped ogee moulded plinth base, (lacking pendulum, weight and trunk door).209cm (82.25ins) high excluding finials, 48cm (19ins) wide, 25.5cm (10ins) deep. The Storr family of Quakers originated from Ostwick in East Riding before moving to Summercroft, Selby and later to York. Batty Storr was born in 1710 and set up in York as a clockmaker most likely taking-on the workshop of his older brother, Marmaduke, who moved to London in around 1728. Jonathan Storr was Batty's eldest surviving son born in York in 1739. Although Jonathan was brought up as a Quaker he evidently left his faith as he was baptised in the Church of England as an adult in 1768 (most likely to allow him to marry Elizabeth Silbeck in York later that year). Jonathan Storr's workshop was located at the corner of Minster Gates in York; in his will dated 24th January 1804 he left most of his goods to his brother, William and his servants.

Y A George III tureen and cover Benjamin Smith II & Benjamin Smith III, London 1817 (to cover and dish), of moulded rectangular outline with a gadrooned border, the domed cover with a gadrooned border to inside, a beaded border to top above engraved marital armorials to either side, with an acanthus clasped handle, the silver-plated liner and base of plain rounded rectangular form, with scroll handles and raised on four ball feet with gadrooned detail and ivory bases Dimensions:Width (across handles): 33cm, weighable silver: 61.5ozNote: Note:Benjamin Smith II 1764-1823Benjamin Smith was born in Birmingham in 1764, he began his career with the industrial magnate Matthew Boulton, before moving to London and later embarking on a partnership with his friend and silversmith Digby Scott in 1802. Their workshop in Greenwich supplied Rundell & Bridge, silversmiths to the crown and where they would have worked alongside the eminent silversmith Paul Storr; many believe their work comparable in quality to his.It would seem that Benjamin preferred to work in partnership with other silversmiths, rather than independently, however these collaborations were always short lived, though why is unclear. He also worked with his brother James and for this tureen with his son Benjamin III, although this for only for a short time. In the wake of George III’s failing health, he was deemed unfit to rule, and thus the Prince of Wales succeeded as Prince Regent in 1811 until his father’s death in 1820. This period offered new beginnings with more influences from the continent and the French Empire style filtering through. The swags of applied fruiting vines, foliate motifs and Bacchus masks were all motifs which were a clear nod to the emerging Regency style, the acanthus handle of the tureen exemplifies the care and detail during this period. Lot 749

A set of four Victorian silver and parcel-gilt figural saltsJohn Samuel Hunt, London 1854, incuse stamped 'HUNT & ROSKELL LATE STORR & MORTIMER 7219' Modelled as four children in 18th century dress, all holding gilt lined baskets to sell their wares, on grass-effect pedestal bases, inscribed with the monogram 'MTU', with wood inserts, height tallest 18.5cm. (4)Footnotes:These silver and parcel-gilt figural salts were originally designed and modelled by the goldsmith Jean-Valentin Morel (French, 1794-1860). Morel was the son of a Parisian lapidary, and studied in the workshop of the gold box maker Adrien Vachette. He began business on his own account around 1830, later settling in Rue Neuve St Augustin in partnership with the French architect Henri Duponchel. After a lawsuit and the dissolution of the partnership, Morel was barred from working in the Department of the Seine, and moved his business to London. He registered his mark in 1849, and continued to produce the highest quality silver and jewellery. Morel exhibited a set of these four salts at the Great Exhibition of 1851, where they were described in The Official Catalogue as 'Saltcellars representing figures on donkeys with baskets, embossed and chased; and figures holding baskets, modelled and chased.' One contemporary commentator in 'The Crystal Palace and its Contents' illustrated the salts and selected them for special praise: 'The silver salt cellars, by Morel, are very beautiful little affairs, in the Louis Quatorze style. They represent rustic children, quite of the Watteau order, bearing baskets and dancing lightly under their burthens.' For this submission at the Great Exhibition, he was awarded a prestigious Council Medal. This design of salt has been noted with hallmarks ranging from 1855-65 with makers' marks for John Samuel Hunt, Barnards, Garrard and C. & G. Fox. When Morel left London under financial difficulties in 1852, it seems likely that he sold his designs to raise funds. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
