Click here to subscribeWilliam John Leech RHA ROI (1881-1968) Still Life with Garden View Oil on canvas, 63 x 53cm (24¾ x 20¾")Signed With Portrait of Frank O'Connor verso, SignedProvenance: Collection of the Hon. Francis D. Murnaghan Jr., thence by descent. The tight cropping, oblique diagonals and multiple interlocking planes, tied together with effortlessly fluid organic forms of this composition are typical of William Leech’s mature manner. The same goes for the relatively subdued yet bold colour palette. In all, it makes for a pictorial dynamism that belies the sedate, domestic subject matter. But then, look what Bonnard or Matisse achieved with similar material. On the verso is a very fresh, vivid portrait of the writer Frank O’Connor. This double act stems from the artist’s practice, begun at some point in the 1930s, of painting on the reverse of canvases that, for one reason or another, he could not sell. An extremely capable and thoughtful painter, Leech - usually known as Bill to his friends - was temperamentally reserved and indifferent to self-promotion. His sober, conservative appearance was at odds with the bohemian world of French painting that inspired him, and indeed with his painterly verve. The son of a Trinity law professor and a dance teacher, he was born in Dublin, attended St Columba’s College in Rathfarnham and went to the Metropolitan School of Art, where his talent was soon recognised. Orpen had recently left the Metropolitan but his stylistic imprint was evident in Leech’s earlier work for some time. More significant, though, was his experience with Walter Osborne at the RHA schools. Leech was already a good French speaker, having spent a year in Switzerland, and Osborne pointed him towards the dazzling world of French painting, the light and colour of the Impressionists. He spent much time in France, and his best work reflected the freedom and spontaneity exemplified by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. He followed his parents to London when they moved there in 1910, and he was more or less based in the UK from then on, but he retained his Irish identity and consistently exhibited in Ireland. The gallerist Leo Smith was an important supporter. Leech is well represented in major public and private collections in Ireland, and his sun-drenched 1911 painting A Convent Garden, Brittany remains one of the most popular works in the National Gallery of Ireland. Aidan Dunne, October 2024 Condition Report: - Overall condition is very good- Under very close inspection there appears to be a few minor abrasions, see images- The paint is very thinly applied and there are small areas of bare canvas, as part of the composition.
MACALLAN 10 YEAR OLD SPEAKER MARTIN SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT 40% ABV / 70cl There are few distilleries in the world quite so revered as Macallan. Nestled in the heart of the Speyside region, the rich spirit that runs from their “curiously small stills”, and their penchant for Spanish Sherry casks have proven to be a match made in Heaven, delighting the tastebuds of whisky connoisseurs around the globe. With demand far outstripping supply, they embarked upon one of the most ambitious distillery upgrades of all time, investing £140 million in an ultra-modern still house and visitor centre that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape, and is home to a whopping 36 stills capable of churning out around 15 million litres of spirit every year. Even so, getting your hands on a bottle can still be tricky, with new releases selling out as soon as they hit the shelves, and older examples regularly setting records at auction.

She named him speaker of the House of Commons the following year, and in 1594 chose him over Francis Bacon to be attorney general. As Attorney General he conducted several trials of treason, prosecuting the Earls of Essex and Southampton, Sir Walter Raleigh and the conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. When his first wife died, he married Elizabeth Cecil, granddaughter of Lord Burghley and niece of Robert Cecil, the most influential minister of the Queen and, for a while, James I.Coke was a champion of Common Law and held the belief that it was more powerful than the King, which upset James I. He stated that 'the King cannot change any part of the common law nor create any offence by proclamation which was not an offence before.' James appointed Coke Lord Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench, believing that he would be bound to look after the King's interests, but Coke continued to maintain the supremacy of the common law. The Privy Council brought several charges against Coke and on 14 November 1616 he was dismissed. By 1617 Coke was back in the Privy Council and in the Star Chamber. He re-entered Parliament, opposed Prince Charles' proposed marriage to a Spanish princess and took part in drawing up bribery charges against Francis Bacon. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
COUTHON GEORGES: (1755-1794) French Politician and Lawyer. President of the National Convention 1793-94. A proficient speaker who often exploited his condition as a paraplegic in order to gain the Assembly`s approval of his proposals. A close associate to Robespierre and Saint-Just in the Committee of Public Safety. Couthon, responsible of the huge increase of executions, was himself guillotined alongside Robespierre. A very rare A.L.S., `Couthon´, a bold ink attractive signature, two pages, 4to, Paris, 19th June 1794, to his fellow citizens in Clermont-Ferrand, in French. A very interesting letter, a manifesto full of republican enthusiasm by Couthon, with multiple words underlined, written only one month before his execution, stating in part `Encore d´excellentes nouvelles, mes chers concitoyens, Ypres, cette place importante qui défendait le port d´Ostende, et nous empêchait de cerner entièrement l´ennemi, Ypres est à nous. More excellent news, my dear fellow citizens, Ypres, this important place which defended the port of Ostend, and prevented us from completely surrounding the enemy, Ypres is ours now. Long live the Republic. Charleroi will not fail to fall into our power immediately, by means of which the enemy shut up in our territory, that is to say in Valenciennes, Condé, Landrecy, and the country of Quesnoi, without being able to withdraw subsistence from anywhere, all avenues being closed to him, will be forced before perhaps a month, to return to us all that treason had delivered to him. Oh, what a beautiful day it will be when we can say, "The Holy Land of Liberty is no longer soiled by the presence of slaves from Austria, Prussia, and England, we are at home, and woe to the foreigner who would dare to try to penetrate it by force or trickery. There would be only one thing missing from this day of glory, that would be to see His Royal Highness the Duke of York, and His Eminence the Prince of Coburg, led triumphantly to Paris. With what pleasure we would give lessons to these great people...") Further and before concluding, Couthon explains his immediate travel plan and how much he wishes to do it, a travel which would never happen as he was going to be shortly after arrested and executed, saying `Maintenant que nos affaires vont bien, je vais me disposer pour mon grand voyage, je dois dire aussi mon délicieux voyage puisqu´il m´enmène pour quelques jours au milieu de mes bons amis du Puy-de-Dôme...´ (Translation: "Now that our affairs are going well, I am going to prepare myself for my big trip, I must also say my delicious trip since it takes me for a few days among my good friends from Puy-de-Dôme...") With blank integral leaf. Very small overall minor age wear, otherwise VGOnly a month after writing this letter, the Convention called for the arrest of Robespierre and his affiliates, including Couthon, Saint-Just and Robespierre's brother, Augustin Robespierre. Couthon was guillotined alongside Robespierre. It took the executioner fifteen minutes, amidst Couthon's screams of pain, to arrange him on the board correctly because of his paralysis.
ENTERTAINMENT: Selection of T.Ls.S., A.Ls.S. (2) etc., by various film and stage actors and actresses, including Laurence Olivier (stating that he has just returned from filming in Tunisia and is about to start work on a television series, March 1976), Michael Redgrave (declining an invitation to take part in a debate as he has to deliver the first of a series of lectures at Bristol University, September 1952), Yvonne Arnaud (stating, in part, ´I am NO ORATOR, and certainly I would be no good as a speaker. I can, in a weak way, answer questions, that is all. I wish I could come.....not only would I enjoy my visit to you, but Miss. Gingold is a very amusing and witty person, and I am sure she would have put me on the spot most amusingly. But (these "buts" are very tiresome, aren´t they?) I shall be away on tour trying out a new comedy....´, September 1952), Irene Handl (replying to a proposal for creating ´The Dickens International Theatre´and stating, in part, ´Dickens is my favourite author. I have read him with acute enjoyment (for all sorts of reasons) from when I could first read to the present day, and I am well over 80. But. Sadly I must disapoint (sic) you. I don´t think the present is the right moment to expand Dickens. The Nat. Theatre´s N. Nickly (sic) and the countless films & T.V. serials have already done that.....Only Shakespeare seems capable of standing up to non-stop production.....I must further disapoint (sic) you by saying that, in essence, Dickens is for reading. That way anyone can make their own pictures from his teeming imagination. I would have loved to hear Charles Dickens reading, but not anyone else. I didn´t enjoy Emlyn Williams. I hated "Nicholas Nicklby" (sic) All were false for me. There´s only one Dickens between the covers of his splendid works´, September 1986, accompanied by the printed 8vo Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Irene Handl at the Actors´ Church St. Paul´s, Covent Garden, 14th March 1988), Hermoine Gingold (2; politely declining an invitation to participate in a debate owing to radio and cabaret committments etc., June & September 1952), Gladys Cooper (signed sepia 4 x 5 magazine photograph, neatly mounted) etc. A few letters with some minor age wear and creasing, G to generally VG, 10
GALT JOHN: (1779-1839) Scottish novelist, entrepreneur, and political and social commentator. Galt has been described as the first political novelist in the English language, owing to being the first novelist to deal with issues of the Industrial Revolution. Concluding section of an A.L.S., J Galt, two pages, oblong 8vo, London, 11th May 1832 (as per a small 12mo piece, presumably excised from the same letter, and now neatly laid down to the lower left corner of the recto). The recto and verso of the fragment comprise approximately twenty complete lines of text and states, in part (recto) ´....but the moment I am in cash which will be the first payment the company makes you will be reimbursed with all expenses.....Our bargain with Government is made but the agreement is not yet signed and Dr. Howick with whom it lies is afraid in the state of things to do any thing. I am in hopes however he will yet go over the agreement with me......' continuing (verso) ´We are in a queer political state. The latest news, & I had it half an hour ago at the Treasury is that the Duke of Wellington goes to the horse guards, A Baring to be Chancellor of the Exchequer, Peel, Home Sec[retar]y, & the Speaker of the House of Commons is to have something but at this moment.......nothing has been definitively fixed......´Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGGalt´s text is written during the ´Days of May´, a period of significant social unrest and political tension in the United Kingdom, and just a little under a month before the Reform Act (greatly opposed by the Duke of Wellington) became law on 7th June 1832.

Apollo 16 Charlie Duke Moonwalker signed 2002 30th Ann Space cover NASA Astronaut. Superb illustration on front of scenes from the mission. Also illustrated on back with crew names and mission information. Charles Moss Duke Jr. (born October 3, 1935) is an American former astronaut, United States Air Force (USAF) officer and test pilot. As Lunar Module pilot of Apollo 16 in 1972, he became the tenth and youngest person to walk on the Moon, at age 36 years and 201 days. A 1957 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he joined the USAF. He completed advanced flight training on the F 86 Sabre at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia, where he was a distinguished graduate. After completion of this training, Duke served three years as a fighter pilot with the 526th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Ramstein Air Base in West Germany. After graduating from the Aerospace Research Pilot School in September 1965, he stayed on as an instructor teaching control systems and flying in the F 101 Voodoo, F 104 Starfighter, and T 33 Shooting Star. In April 1966, Duke was one of nineteen men selected for NASA's fifth group of astronauts. In 1969, he was a member of the astronaut support crew for Apollo 10. He served as CAPCOM for Apollo 11, the first crewed landing on the Moon. His distinctive Southern drawl became familiar to audiences around the world, as the voice of a Mission Control made nervous by a long landing that almost expended all of the Lunar Module Eagle descent stage's propellant. Duke's first words to the Apollo 11 crew on the surface of the Moon were flustered, Roger, Twank. Tranquillity, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot! Duke was backup lunar module pilot on Apollo 13. Shortly before the mission, he caught rubella (German measles) from a friend's child and inadvertently exposed the prime crew to the disease. As Ken Mattingly had no natural immunity to the disease, he was replaced as command module pilot by Jack Swigert. Mattingly was reassigned as command module pilot of Duke's flight, Apollo 16. On this mission, Duke and John Young landed at the Descartes Highlands and conducted three extravehicular activities (EVAs). He also served as backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 17. Duke retired from NASA on January 1, 1976. Following his retirement from NASA, Duke entered the Air Force Reserve and served as a mobilization augmentee to the Commander, USAF Basic Military Training Center, and to the Commander, USAF Recruiting Service. He graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1978. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1979 and retired in June 1986. He has logged 4,147 hours' flying time, of which 3,632 hours were in jet aircraft, and 265 hours were in space, including 21 hours and 38 minutes of EVA. Duke resides in New Braunfels, Texas, and was named Texan of the Year in 2020. He is currently on the board of directors for the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation and previously served for two years as the chairman. He is a popular motivational speaker, with NASA films and personal stories of his Apollo mission on the moon. He is a born again Christian and he and his wife Dorothy speak to audiences regarding their faith and its effect on their marriage. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £5.99, EU from £7.99, Rest of World from £9.99

Registration - Y6 HYOChassis No. - SAJAC63H8FMK14270M.O.T. - November 2025Odometer - 45,000This enticing Jaguar F-Type R comes to market having covered a modest and well below average 45,879 miles to date. Complete with many expensive and desirable options this hugely capable sports coupe has been used and enjoyed by eight keepers to date. Offered without reserve this highly specified F-Type shows a Category S insurance marker from January 2019 and a Category N insurance marker from May 2022. Presenting today in a condition that is described as “excellent” throughout, this example is being sold complete with its distinctive personalised registration plate, partial service history and two, original keys. The sublime Jaguar F-Type first hit the showrooms in convertible Roadster configuration with the tin-topped Coupe launching a few months later in March 2014. As such this alluring example of the range-topping F-Type R would have been one of the first examples of this exalted breed to emphatically turn the heads of passersby, being first registered in May 2014. Costing considerably over £90,000 when new, courtesy of the addition of the £7,000 carbon ceramic brake option and others to the £85,000 list price, this R represents the apex-predator atop the F-Type food chain. This example proudly exhibits all the attributes that put the R at the pinnacle of the range and that won the hearts and blew the minds of reviewers and owners alike. Chief amongst these, of course, is the 550 PS AJ-V8 Gen III 5.0 litre power unit. Equipped in this application with a Twin Vortices Series supercharger, a veritable mountain of torque is also on tap almost from tick over, to the tune of 501 Ib-ft at 2,000 rpm. Stiffer spring rates and a trick, more aggressive electrically controlled limited slip differential help this prodigious power to be effectively deployed at will. This car’s state of the art carbon ceramic brakes not only provide almost physics defying retardation but also a respectful nod to the marque’s heritage. Jaguar, after all, were the first manufacturer to use disc brakes at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race of 1953. A fitting homage, then, that Jaguar described as “the most powerfully performing braking system ever fitted to a Jaguar road car” in 2014. With 398mm discs at the front and 380mm items at the rear sitting beneath six and four pot monobloc callipers respectively, this set up starts to look good value for its original £7,000 cost. The signature vivid yellow of the big callipers contrast strikingly with the deep, pristine black of the optional 20-inch Storm alloy wheels. A staggered set of high specification Michelin Pilot Sport S tyres adorn the big wheels being date stamped from 2022 for the rears and 2024 for the fronts. The sleek, muscular aluminium and composite bodywork appears to present beautifully in its gleaming Polaris White livery. This Jaguar’s cabin is by no means the junior partner to this heady specification, either. The cosseting cabin is finished with Jet leather with double needle stitching, and Jet hued carpets and headlining. The optional suedecoth steering wheel with carbon fibre centre console finisher features here, too. The sports focussed Performance seats feature the optional 14-way electrical adjustment, memory settings and variable heating. Padded and stitched “R” emblems adorn the integral headrests, of course. Should you want to drown out the awe-inspiring soundtrack of that supercharged V8, the optional and optimum, mighty 770 watt, 12 speaker Meridian Surround Sound system is more than equal to that task. Other refinements include satellite navigation, 8-speed ZF automatic transmission with alloy, Ignis shift paddles, reversing camera, blind spot detection, sports suspension with adaptive dynamics and switchable active sports exhaust to name a few.Such was the F-Type’s advanced design that it remained in production, only having been lightly facelifted, until June of this year. Starting with the XJR racing cars of the 1980’s and first seen in road configuration in the XJR-S of 1988, the esteemed “R” suffix is reserved for only the fastest and most prestigious Jaguars. The F-Type R stands as a proud and worthy recipient of the fabled “R” suffix to this day.In summary:A range topping F-Type R offered without reserveWell below average original mileageComplete with numerous desirable options including carbon ceramic brakesFresh MOT until November 2025
