DAME LAURA KNIGHT Behind the Scenes at the Old Vic signed and inscribed, charcoal, 35.5 x 25cm This sketch depicts the Birmingham Old Rep production of Shakespeare's Henry VI trilogy at the Old Vic in 1953. Laura Knight was commissioned by Sir Barry Jackson to do a series of drawings to coincide with the Birmingham Rep's 40th anniversary. In her autobiography - The Magic of a Line - she writes "From among the many subjects I have studied, few have interested me more than those I found at the Old Vic. I filled many big sketch books with perhaps the best drawings I ever did of life backstage." In excellent condition

'Dinner Time', April 1859, an original pencil drawing showing a full?length profile of the Great Seal at London Zoo, half submerged by water, with the artist's pencil monogram and date lower right and caption bottom centre, 137 x 108mm, mounted, framed and glazed Virginia Surtees, 'The Paintings and Drawings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828?1882) A Catalogue Raisonné' (1971), vol. 1, 210 (no. 600); Henry Currie Marillier, 'Dante Gabriel Rossetti: An Illustrated Memorial of his Art and Life' (1899), 229: 'When Burne?Jones and Morris were living at Red Lion Square, and Rossetti was in rooms at Blackfriars, the Zoological Gardens were a constant resort of all three. The accompanying sketch of the great seal expecting his dinner is a relic of those days, and was probably one of many such. Oddly enough, with the exception of apes once or twice, the cat in 'Fra Pace', and the fawn in 'Mary Magdalene at the Door of Simon', Rossetti never seems to have had any inclination to introduce animals into pictures. He reserved them exclusively for his private life, of which they formed, as the above notes show, a characteristic and remarkable feature.' (1)

A proscenium arch with figures in boxes to the left, the one nearest to the stage being prominent. 9 3/4in x 15 1/2in. Unsigned. Inscribed by Laurence Whistler to the reverse Cochran thinks this is a sketch for a view in 'Streamline' designed by Cecil Beaton 22 'Eye-Volution' showing the three ages of a Chorus girl, 1890's, 1900's-1934... ...He says 'Lady Cunard' seen in the box caused offence. Did Rex make this sketch when discussing the scene with Cecil.
