*Napoleon I (Emperor of France). An original pencil drawing of Napoleon on his deathbed, attributed to Captain Ward at St Helena, c. 5th-7th May 1821, an amateur outline pencil sketch on tracing paper, showing Napoleon lying dead with two pillows under his head, dressed in full military uniform, with helmet, medals and cape, some spotting and sl. creasing, approx. 11.5 x 20 cm, glued at corners to a later album leaf, with an old ink inscription beneath, 'Taken by Captain Ward, who was quartered at St. Helena at the time'. Provenance: Believed to be from Marie Wragg de Winton, a South Wales or Midlands artist (fl. 1839-60), and since handed down through the family. The implication is that Captain Ward was Captain of the Guards responsible for guarding the dead Emperor before his funeral, and that subsequently Captain Ward gave the sketch to his friend Madame Marie Wragg de Winton.
