A LARGE ENGRAVED IRANIAN SILVER BOWL AND TRAY BY MAHMUD RABI'I Pahlavi Iran, ca. 1960 - 1970Comprising a large silver bowl, resting on a stepped, splayed, circular foot, with a scalloped rim, the exterior engraved and incised with a typical wide horizontal frieze alternating over-imposed cusped palmettes and arabesque medallions, set against a ring-dotted ground of floral sprays and leafy volutes, the rim enhanced with dense rosette festoons, the base stamped with the maker's mark, the Iranian silversmith Mahmud Rabi'i, the assay mark '84, and the retailer's mark 'PH', Pirayesh (active 1960 - 1970); and its matching circular tray, with a wide, flattened rim, and everted edges, the engraved decoration around the rim matching in style the exterior of the bowl, and the centre showcasing a large sunburst medallion with a rosette in the middle issuing interlocking vegetal meanders, cusped palmettes, and arabesque medallions, stamped with the same three marks on the reverse of the rim. A late-19th century Scottish silver thistle-shaped whisky tot - Edinburgh 1899, probably James Rettie & Son, Aberdeen, the thistle bowl and stem on a cast thistle-leaf base, 6.6cm high.* In good condition. Clear marks to bowl and base. No repairs. Engraved initials to shield cartouche. Two or three very small dings to rim. Gilt to interior surface worn. The tot does stand upright - but the centre of the base is very slightly proud of the rest of the base, so it does wobble very slightly on the base.
